Sophos Firewall Primary Use Case

TarunPanchal - PeerSpot reviewer

I typically use the Sophos XG Firewall to enhance my cybersecurity by using all layers.

The intrusion prevention system in Sophos XG Firewall impacts my security posture because they were impacted by ransomware and cyber threats, but I did not face any issues. I have more than 800 servers live from Sophos.

I have experienced that the benefits from Sophos XG's synchronized security feature are very good, and I have not faced any issues with this.

We have deployed the Sophos XG for one of our clients in an SD-WAN scenario where they have one primary link on lease lines and a secondary link on broadband, and they have an on-premise concentrator. It is for specific government reasons they have deployed it at the center, and it's quite satisfactory.

In comparison with other products, Sophos XG is a much more professional company, and you need limited support; most of the things are already available. Whereas with the Indian counterparts, when we used Ray and Infinix, there were some customizations required, as it was not an inbuilt feature, especially in case of reporting and other aspects. The price point at which those products are available makes them viable options because we deploy them according to client requirements. If a client is not ready to invest that much amount, these products are the optimum mix for them.

My main use case for Sophos Firewall is blocking threats from outside. I use Sophos Firewall to block threats from outside by implementing a rule-based policy, where whenever traffic has to pass through the firewall, I create a rule, and based on that rule, I can easily perform the configuration that I want with the restriction.

With the help of Sophos Firewall, I can also have visibility on my users, see what they are doing and what they need to use, and apply those types of restrictions from Sophos Firewall.

We don't have remote workers, so Sophos XG is only used for our in-house applications and users within the same building. For remote access, we use the Sophos free firewall home edition to connect to the Sophos XG 450, so there was no problem when the license was still activated. We experienced problems currently since the license is no longer activated.

I am using Prisma Access browser, but the terms are different in Palo Alto, as every firewall has different functions and names for the access browser.

Regarding the firewall itself, I work with Palo Alto VM-Series firewall, which is very good compared to others; its rating is very good.

We are using the Cortex series.

I use Cortex XSOAR mainly for XDR, Cortex XDR. I specifically use XDR for extended detection and response.

The security orchestration, automation, and response features of Cortex XSOAR are very advanced, and the functions are rated highly compared to others.

Currently, we are not using Cortex XSOAR for SOAR functionality. Because we have not been using it for a long time, our option is based on our organization needs; we are not a big organization with a total of 150 plus users, and the option we use currently is enough for our network, so we are not using DNS Security and other options.

It also facilitates the connection of branches and conducts malware scans on network traffic. These are the main purposes typically associated with servers. In terms of features, Sophos XG excels in catering to customers seeking a comprehensive network security solution. This unified threat management platform encompasses a firewall, IPS, web proxy, mail gateway, web application firewall, sandbox, and DLP module. We also are able to manage our users in terms of bandwidth usage and the allocation of bandwidth, whereby we give our users restricted access for use during working hours and they are supposed to utilize the bandwidth and make sure that we optimize and prioritize the applications able to get the necessary bandwidth. The majority of our customers use Sophos XG as a traditional firewall. Some use it for endpoint protection, which is similar to anti-virus.

We also have customers that have SD-WAN as part of their use case. For the most part, it is a firewall, it depends on what the customer environment looks like that would determine how you're going to configure the appliance to work for the customer.

Technology can deliver what you want based on your environment, what you do may differ from what others do.

We have customers from insurance, some oil, and gas, as well as some from the banking sector. Based on the technicality and the peculiarities of the environment, we must explain the technology, of how Fortinet delivers its own firewall, and also others such as Check Point, and Palo Alto deliver their own firewall.

With the explanation given the customer can choose the solution, they want in their environment.

Also, our home and external users need to be able to log in. So we use Sophos XG to build our deployment. Sophos is more than just a firewall. It analyzes security effects, so it's a firewall for the future. It's more than just a hardware firewall. There are also some paid options, so we do not have to have the main server inside our office here. We use Office 365. And although we use five servers at our location, not everything is in the cloud yet.

The solution is primarily used to secure networks, just like PSF, but much better. Sophos XG has a UTM, which is much more security inclusive than a firewall, as it takes a look at the threat management landscape from a unified point of view. They have a firewall and they have an IPS inside the same box. They have a sandbox, they have a web filter, they have a web application firewall, they have a mail gateway, and they have a DMP. These are all inside one box. It's excellent at protecting networks from security threats as well.

I'm using the solution mainly for its firewall application and to prevent intrusion in the system. The XG platform is very powerful from the perspective of identification and to prevent potential attacks on the system due to its the capacity to predict and to anticipate the potential damage on the system.

It's integrated inside the system, meaning that it can control all the endpoints in the system and talk with them and identify any potential situation. It can also isolate one area inside the system without compromising the entire system. This allows you to isolate the initial problem without involving the entire infrastructure.

You have real-time control of all your infrastructure. It is integrated with the hardware and offers good performance alongside the hardware and by the firmware, and these work together to control the entire infrastructure.

We do not have a primary use case for this solution. We are using Sophos XG to configure wireless networks. Some of our clients have Sophos XG integrations and we are using the MAC filtering on it.

We also use the Sophos XG antivirus, content filtering, and as a secure email gateway.

We have a bundled license with an email security subscription. We also use the free Sophos XG VPN.

What sets Sophos XG apart from other vendors is the solution's dual antivirus. We enabled the Security Heartbeat feature, which synchs endpoints with the network layer antivirus; they work as a single unit. If there is a virus attack from outside world, the firewall handles it. If a virus comes when the network layer is idle, the endpoint protection takes care of it, which is why we are using this solution in our office scenario.

In addition to using this firewall ourselves, we resell the product to our customers. We have a well-trained team that can perform the implementation and deployment.

I was using the Sophos XG firewall in my last job, where it was part of our security solution.

We had multiple locations with the internet being provided from a central location. Each of our locations was connected point-to-point using MPLS lines. Using Sophos meant that we didn't need to have a router.

It's being used as a UTM, no firewalling. So it acts as a bridge. It doesn't provide the IP services, it doesn't provide DNS, it doesn't provide DHCP services, and it doesn't operate as a router or a point of mapping. It's only being used for filtering: Web and application filtering, as well as antivirus. I usually disable the anti-spam on all those units, because I have a gateway anti-spam server in place.
