Jira didn't do the portfolio very well, so the use case was trying to do the work with multiple teams. Jira couldn't do that out of the box.

Linking of PI Objectives with different features was cool, but it didn't have integration with Jira
Pros and Cons
- "The linking of PI Objectives with different features was one of the cool things. It had features, epics, and stories out of the box."
- "It should just have the integration with Jira. We haven't looked at it since Atlassian bought the product."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
The linking of PI Objectives with different features was one of the cool things. It had features, epics, and stories out of the box.
What needs improvement?
It should just have the integration with Jira. We haven't looked at it since Atlassian bought the product.
For how long have I used the solution?
I had a little bit of experience with it when we tested it. We just did a review of it while trying to compare three products.

How are customer service and support?
We dealt with some folks over there. I can't remember who we worked with there. Their support was really good because they were trying to sell us the product. They were trying to get a procurement, so they were really nice, but I can't say about the support after the product purchase.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We compared AgileCraft, Rally, and ALM Octane. We decided not to go with AgileCraft because of the expense of doing it.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate AgileCraft a seven out of 10.

Project Manager at a consultancy with 201-500 employees
Useful customization, technical support responsive, scalable and reliable
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable features are the ability to customize the entries and to update them quickly. Since the new version they released, we started utilizing the customization features to create specific codes and symbols for our teams that were not available before. For example, in team A each person had their own symbols and we had our own demarcation. When our project or task was completed, we had a code that we could enter online that let the main project managers know that it was time to remove it."
- "One of the biggest issues I found in the new version was once we clicked on one of the tasks that were specifically for our group and went to look at the other portfolios in other areas we had to browse all the way back to the beginning. If you click the back button, it would not work, it stayed the same place. Additionally, if you click on page B, but then you wanted to go back to page A it would not go back to page A. You would have to browse back to the portfolio and then find your group again and open it. This was the only issue that I had with it and I am not sure if it is a Jira issue or it was because of the way the site was laid out."
What is our primary use case?
We use the solution for schedule management and to do any updates on projects that we have had. I am a project manager and our organization put together a portfolio for each of us to have our own set of projects listed specifically under Jira that we had to provide regular daily updates for.
How has it helped my organization?
This solution helped our organization by allowing us to do customizations easily for our fast-paced team environment.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable features are the ability to customize the entries and to update them quickly. Since the new version they released, we started utilizing the customization features to create specific codes and symbols for our teams that were not available before. For example, in team A each person had their own symbols and we had our own demarcation. This was the only issue that I had with it and I am not sure if it is a Jira issue or it was because of the way the site was laid out.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Jira Align for approximately four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is very stable. We had one issue but I cannot say if it was because of the network that we were on or if it was a limitation of the solution. Everything else about the solution was stable. The only time it was down was when our administrators announced they were going to take it down.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability is good because when we started utilizing the solution we only had three teams and three different sections then from December to January the developers came together and it expanded to 76 different tasks across the teams. When we hit February we had over 300. It is easy to expand and it did not only encompass our teams but also had links to other teams that were outside of our main sets of teams.
Our whole agency was using the solution which is approximately 100 people.
How are customer service and technical support?
When I sent an email out to the technical support I received a couple of answers back. I would say their technical support is good.
How was the initial setup?
When I had to set up my own pages, it was quite easy. I had an enjoyable time creating my own test pages and it allowed me to change many features and test out the different settings. It was very easy to import new documentation and attachments and to set up sub-pages for our team to check in to Jira Align.
What about the implementation team?
It was a large-scale effort for the implementation of the solution and there were three main supervisors overseeing the operation. We have a total of 12 administrators maintaining this version of Jira Align.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I have evaluated ServiceNow.
What other advice do I have?
My advice to others is this is a good solution and if you have multiple teams as we did that require you to provide daily updates then it is the ideal choice. You can track every entry and you can see when it is inputted by a timestamp. If you have a lot of mission-critical or time-sensitive activities, Jira is good for tracking and helping to keep everything organized.
This is an excellent solution and has great functionality.
I rate Jira Align an eight out of ten.
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.

Systems Engineer at a healthcare company with 1,001-5,000 employees
Useful for earned value calculations, tracking tasks, and posting a schedule so that engineers can update their tasks
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature is that engineers can access the Jira database and just search for the tasks that are assigned to them. They can then update the status on their own in those records that are assigned to them."
- "There is no linkage between the Jira records and the overarching schedule. We maintain the overarching schedule in Microsoft Project, and there is no linkage back and forth with the Jira tasks. They are independent of each other."
What is our primary use case?
We have a semi-detailed project plan, and our software groups break down design feature X into sub-tasks in Jira and assign estimates, resources, and due dates. Then they manage a sort of agile sprint. They'll look at task items within the next two weeks, and they track that at the beginning of that two-week sprint. At the end of the two-week sprint, they again see where they ended up. We have had people using it to do essentially earned value calculations. They look at what percentage of work has been completed by estimating the total work for a task or set of tasks, and then they track hours spent against those tasks and percentage complete.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is that engineers can access the Jira database and just search for the tasks that are assigned to them. They can then update the status on their own in those records that are assigned to them.
What needs improvement?
There is no linkage between the Jira records and the overarching schedule. We maintain the overarching schedule in Microsoft Project, and there is no linkage back and forth with the Jira tasks. They are independent of each other.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I have not heard anybody complaining about it.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I suspect it is scalable. We have had semi-large software projects managed through it.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We can also use Microsoft Project. However, we generally can't post a Microsoft Project schedule and have each individual engineer go in and update their own tasks or even look at it. In fact, most of the engineers don't even have Microsoft Project as a tool on their PCs. So, they rely on the project manager to post a PDF version of the schedule, and essentially, we end up having to have a meeting every week to say, "Okay, you guys were working on these things, and they were due this week. Did you get them done or not?"
What other advice do I have?
It is not a project management solution in itself. I would call it an adjunct tool to something like Microsoft Project. In Jira, I don't see a way to show project or task dependencies or even a high-level schedule layout. It is more for the individual tasks that are going to be done in the next two-week period, but the big picture of why you have to do those things in that two-week period is kind of missing.
I would rate this solution an eight out of ten. It is not perfect, but I also don't see any big problems with how we're using it.

Workflows are scalable but can sometimes be complex to navigate
Pros and Cons
- "Jira Align helps us manage communication and tasks for a variety of teams without overlap."
- "The workflows are scalable from portfolio to individual level but can sometimes be complex to navigate."
What is our primary use case?
I used Jira Align when I was working with CACI. We use Jira Align to build and manage workflows, which allows each team to understand their work.
How has it helped my organization?
Jira Align helps us manage communication and tasks for a variety of teams without overlap.
What is most valuable?
I like how things can be sorted out, and it shows the different objectives one can do. You could also create a team view that would allow your team to see work outcomes. Jira Align also helps with the reporting, because we can export data to Excel or another format.
What needs improvement?
The workflows are scalable from portfolio to individual level but can sometimes be complex to navigate.
For how long have I used the solution?
I used Jira Align for about a year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It was very stable, and I liked the refresh rate. I know a lot of it also depends on personal network connectivity, but it instantly updates changes.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
When you sign in, you will see the different objectives that you would have, and then it would show you bigger objectives, your status, who was using it, and what they completed and what wasn't. If there are linked topics that were part of it, then it will show the aligned tasks.
How are customer service and technical support?
The support team was very helpful, knowledgeable, and very responsive. Also, when you visit their forum page, they have a chat thread where you can look up problems or questions with other users and get answers from there.
How was the initial setup?
I wasn't part of the initial setup, but the setup was easy when I got access to Jira Align. It was easy to personalize after I signed in, and I could put in my icon, picture, background picture, and thumbnail. So it is easily customizable and you can set up your page. With that, it was easy for all teams to organize their profiles.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing wasn't something they exposed me to because the business development team handled it.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

IT bp at a tech services company with 11-50 employees
Difficult to learn and forces you to rely on vendors, although it is stable and scalable
Pros and Cons
- "I found Confluence most valuable."
- "I don't know if Jira provides training for people who want to be certified with the solution, so that is one of the problems."
What is our primary use case?
We used Jira Align as an ITSM. The solution uses Slack as well. We use Confluence.
What is most valuable?
I found Confluence most valuable.
What needs improvement?
For an ITSM tool to be maximized in an organization, it should be tailor-fitted. Unfortunately, some are not good at programming these applications. For example, we've used Jira for some time but never configured the SLA. It depends on the person who is programming the software.
When it comes to a weakness, I don't know if Jira provides training for people who want to be certified with the solution, so that is one of the problems. We depend on the vendor, and the vendor doesn't have enough time to support us, so we need training from Jira.
ServiceNow has a lot of resources. So that may be the game changer there.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have one year of experience.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Jira Align is stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Jira Align is scalable.
How are customer service and support?
When we deployed Jira, there was no support. It's not a problem on the vendor side. It's a problem because no one is properly managing the service services. There is no vendor management at all. But it's not Jira's fault.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is quite dynamic.
What other advice do I have?
To be honest, if your company does not have a software developer team, choose something else. If you're not planning to make an SLA, just use something else.
I rate Jira Align a five out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Public Cloud
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Business and Functional Specialist at a tech services company with 1,001-5,000 employees
A stable tool to manage day-to-day admin activities that allow its users to build dashboards and reports
Pros and Cons
- "Jira Align has been quite a helpful tool for us because, without it, we would be juggling with all our story points or our backlog items, which would be difficult to manage."
- "Someone who is new to Jira or doesn't have many years of working experience in Jira Align gets easily lost because everything looks the same in the product."
What is our primary use case?
In my company, the solution is used for managing our day-to-day activities like kanban and scrum.
We have a scrum team in our company. We had adapted scrum long ago. We have been an agile team for a long time now. We do have many use-case stories and backlog items. As and when we get any backlog items, we record all those things in Jira and then build a kanban board and scrum board to take care of with our daily activities.
How has it helped my organization?
Jira Align has been quite a helpful tool for us because, without it, we would be juggling with all our story points or our backlog items, which would be difficult to manage. We were earlier managing all those things in Excel and other document tools. With Jira Align, everything looks quite organized since it gives us one place or acts as one solution for all our admin activities. Jira Align does not just help with the admin activity. Jira Align helps with the planning and helps its users know what was completed and is still pending. We can see all the backlog items and then analyze the workflow, which is quite helpful. We do have the reporting functionality in Jira Align, allowing us to take care of all the tasks and the backlog items from Jira and then build up some dashboards and other reports for senior management.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable features of the solution are Jira Align's dashboards and its ability to build customized reports because we have multiple teams here. Multiple people work on the same big chunk of activity, usually broken down into many tasks. With Jira Align, we get to know what task is assigned to which employee while analyzing the workload and identifying what is still pending, what is in process, and what or how many tasks were completed, which is helpful for us to manage a project. To manage our day-to-day activity, dashboard and reporting features are the most helpful.
What needs improvement?
An area of room for improvement is related to Jira Align's simplicity. Someone who is new to Jira or doesn't have many years of working experience in Jira Align gets easily lost because everything looks the same in the product. The navigational and other workflow features in Jira Align aim to provide ease of use that sometimes creates difficulty for a newcomer or someone new to Jira to get to know where they are once they are in the system. In Jira Align, the navigational feature or the ability to cross over to each screen should be made more precise, and then it would be much more helpful for someone new to Jira.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Jira Align for seven years. Our organization is a customer of Jira.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is a stable solution. Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability-wise, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.
In my workplace, we have 15 members, who are IT specialists, and mostly developers or architects working with Jira Align.
As of now, we haven't considered increasing the product's use.
How are customer service and support?
I haven't had any experience with the solution's technical support since the tool was always intact and running.
How was the initial setup?
I rate the initial setup a seven on a scale of one to ten, where one point is difficult, and ten is easy.
As a new user, I faced some difficulties when just starting to use Jira Align.
The deployment process takes around half a day, like four to five hours.
What about the implementation team?
The installation phase was done in-house.
What other advice do I have?
Two people, including the agile lead and product owner, are required for the maintenance of the solution.
I recommend Jira Align to those who do not have to handle a lot of backlog items because it gives you a one-stop solution to manage the workflow and then build insights, dashboards, or reports. Jira would be a much more enhanced option rather than using simple Excel sheets or other primary tools.
As a product, I am very much comfortable with it. My only suggestion related to its improvement would be simplifying its overall navigation.
Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.
Owner and Principal at a tech services company with 1-10 employees
It has excellent tools that simplify task management
Pros and Cons
- "I like Jira's structured project plan, with tasks and subtasks. Jira can use various external plugins. Third-party providers can add new features to the solution. If I need some functionality, I can usually find an app for it. They have thousands."
What is our primary use case?
Jira Align is an excellent tool for project management. We use it to manage our implementations and custom-developed solutions.
How has it helped my organization?
Jira helps us perform complex implementations, and it has excellent tools that simplify task management.
What is most valuable?
I like Jira's structured project plan, with tasks and subtasks. Jira can use various external plugins. Third-party providers can add new features to the solution. If I need some functionality, I can usually find an app for it. They have thousands.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have used Jira Align for about five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I rate Jira Align nine out of 10 for stability.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I rate Jira Align nine out of 10 for scalability.
How was the initial setup?
Jira's basic setup is easy, but more complex configurations require some expertise.
What was our ROI?
We have seen a return.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Jira Align is reasonably priced at a bout $7 per user. That's the basic price, but you can also purchase add-ons.
What other advice do I have?
I rate Jira Align nine out of 10. It's highly versatile. When you create Jira, you have two project options: company-managed and team-managed. Team-managed projects are limited. While they may seem complex initially, company-managed projects are much more flexible. Many people might think Jira is limited because they choose the simplest configuration. They should try starting with a company-managed project.
