HPE Alletra Storage is mainly used as a database.
CTO at a financial services firm with 1,001-5,000 employees
Provides reliable storage, speed, and performance
Pros and Cons
- "The solution's most valuable features are reliable storage, speed, and performance."
- "We faced many problems with HPE Alletra 6000, and we did not understand whether it was because of some issue with the controllers or the disk."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
The solution's most valuable features are reliable storage, speed, and performance.
HPE Alletra Storage’s hard disk change makes it good for predicting problems and preventing them before they occur.
What needs improvement?
We faced many problems with HPE Alletra 6000, and we did not understand whether it was because of some issue with the controllers or the disk. However, we changed it, and we don't use it anymore.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using HPE Alletra Storage for five years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I think the solution's scalability is enough for us because we cannot use one storage for all. We get a lot of storage and share data.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We previously used HPE MSA, HPE 3PAR, and HPE EVA.
How was the initial setup?
The solution’s initial setup is smooth.
What other advice do I have?
We use the HPE Alletra 9060, HPE Alletra 9080, and HPE Alletra 6000 versions of the solution. We may consider using other vendors, such as Pure Storage or Dell Storage, in the future because we want to know which one offers the best price.
We chose HPE Alletra Storage because we have the best HPE partner to help us whenever we have a problem. He's one of the best vendors in our country. This is very important for us because some vendors or partners are not so efficient. Since we use the solution in banking, we cannot stop the systems. We call our vendor for support and to understand the problem, and they always help us.
We have around 50 to 60 terabytes in one storage.
Overall, I rate the solution ten out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Great performance with excellent support and a data availability guarantee
Pros and Cons
- "The all-flash system we have is incredibly fast."
- "In the perfect world, it would be cheaper."
What is our primary use case?
We use it for our primary production storage array as well as its DR capabilities, where we replicate our data over to another Nimble or Alletra.
What is most valuable?
The resiliency of its array capabilities and the data replication features they have available are the product's most valuable aspects.
It provides a cloud-like operating model on-prem. It has positively affected operations. The management tools they have available make it easy to provision or add additional space. It's very easy to click through.
It's been a rock-solid system. We've had a couple of drives go down before we're even aware of it and they notify us and send us a replacement.
It's important to have a data availability guarantee, being a hospital. We need to maintain that patient data.
The workflows are very automated, for example, if we need something replaced.
We've been able to reduce the time spent on storage provisioning by 30%. It's so easy to provision a data store or a new chunk of disk.
We've improved storage performance. The all-flash system we have is incredibly fast.
What needs improvement?
In the perfect world, it would be cheaper.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the solution for about five years now.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is stable and rock-solid. It's been five years. A drive may be going out since it's been so long; however, beyond that, which is expected, we haven't had any issues.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It's easily scalable. You can build up and out with this kind of storage.
You can get around five additional shelves, and you're talking hundreds of terabytes of data that you can put on this solution.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support is great. HPE provides some of the best support we've ever dealt with. We do pay for premium support. It's worth every penny. As soon as we have a problem, we open a ticket with them, and they immediately get back to us well within the four hour SLA that we have with them.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We have a 3PAR that's also an HPE storage array. We also have a Nimble. The 3PAR has been good. However, it's getting older, and it's in need of a change.
How was the initial setup?
We do use an Azure Cloud. However, it is a very small footprint.
The experience deploying an Alletra was very good. It was nice and easy.
What about the implementation team?
We do go through a third party to order the solution; however, my colleague and I were the individuals who actually racked it.
What was our ROI?
We have witnessed an ROI in terms of the IOPs. The speed at which we get the data from it is incredibly fast.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
If there was another solution that was evaluated, it would have been before my time at the company.
What other advice do I have?
I'd rate the solution eight out of ten. It's rock solid with great support. It's just the price that is the sticking point.
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.

This solution simplifies storage operations and provides predictable performance and capacity for applications.
What needs improvement?
HPE Alletra Storage is considered expensive compared to competitors like Dell and Huawei. Many times, we lose deals due to price even though it is the best solution in the market.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
HPE Alletra Storage is 100% stable, and no other solution offers such complete stability.
How are customer service and support?
HPE support is considered the best department in the company, backed by HPE InfoSight solutions.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
In the past, we used Nimble storage, but we did not implement it last year. Instead, we used HPE Alletra Storage.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup of HPE Alletra Storage was straightforward and easy to deploy. The infrastructure, including servers and storage, was completed in less than a week.
What about the implementation team?
I am a manager, not an architect, but we have an architect who handled the setup process.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The product is known to be expensive. In many situations, we compare it with competitors like Dell and Huawei, and the pricing often makes us lose the competition.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Dell, Huawei
What other advice do I have?
Overall, I rate HPE Alletra Storage a 10 out of 10. The only issue is the price because sometimes customers don't need all the available features and opt for cheaper solutions with fewer features from competitors.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Hybrid Cloud
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Impressive speed and the reliability is excellent
Pros and Cons
- "The stability of the solution is rock-solid."
- "It was fairly difficult to migrate the data from 3PAR over."
What is our primary use case?
We were replacing our 3PAR with Alletra.
How has it helped my organization?
Alletra has mainly helped our organization by offering us improved performance.
What is most valuable?
The speed is very impressive. The reliability is excellent. We haven't had a single issue with it.
Alletra provides a cloud-like operational model on-prem. It hasn't affected operations.
It's very good at predicting and preventing problems. It's very robust. It notifies you of any issues at all. That said, we haven't had any early warnings. I've seen some messages. Overall, I'm pretty impressed at the proactiveness.
The guarantee of data availability has been important. To have that kind of guarantee is something we don't get from other vendors.
Alletra has helped reduce the time spent on storage and provisioning. 3PAR was pretty easy on this count as well. It does reduce maybe 25% or so.
The solution has improved our storage performance in terms of IOPs by about 15%.
We haven't had any storage-related support tickets.
What needs improvement?
I'd like to see a migration tool. That doesn't seem to be available on Alletra. It was fairly difficult to migrate the data from 3PAR over.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using Alletra for about two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability of the solution is rock-solid.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It's really easy to expand Alletra on the fly. We don't have to take an outage, which is important.
How are customer service and support?
We haven't had any issues per se and haven't had to call support.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We previously used 3PAR. It was coming up on the end of life, which was why we switched.
How was the initial setup?
We got it up and running in just a few days.
Deploying was really straightforward. It's just a matter of hooking it up to the fabric and then learning the management interface. That was probably the biggest time-consuming factor - just learning the differences between the new management interface and 3PAR.
What about the implementation team?
We got the product through GreenLake. We had someone from HPE come out and provide a basic overview.
What was our ROI?
We have witnessed a bit of ROI since using Alletra.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Licensing and cost weren't an issue at all.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We didn't really look at other solutions. We considered NetApp, however, it got eliminated quickly based on price and performance. Alletra was a lot better.
What other advice do I have?
I'd rate the solution ten out of ten based on the performance, reliability, and price point.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Public Cloud
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Reseller at a tech services company with 51-200 employees
Rock solid with good data availability and excellent technical support
Pros and Cons
- "The data availability guarantee is great."
- "We haven't had any issues with the solution so far."
How has it helped my organization?
We've been able to optimize storage with Alletra.
What is most valuable?
The data availability guarantee is great. Fortunately, we haven't had to use it, however, it's good to know it's there as an insurance policy.
It's helped us reduce time spent on storage provisioning. It's gone from weeks to days to hours and minutes. The automated tools and intelligence built in make provisioning storage a lot easier.
It's helped increase storage performance for IOPs. With every new controller family comes more IOPs plus NVMe it's boundless.
What needs improvement?
We haven't had any issues with the solution so far.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We haven't had any issues with stability. Upgrading is easy.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The product is easy to scale.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support is excellent. Nimble support is the gold standard. They are always there and the follow-up is great.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We've used EMC and 3PAR in the past. Alletra is easy to provision and rock solid. It also has INfoSight analytics.
How was the initial setup?
Many clients are using a variety of clouds, including AWS, Microsoft, etc.
It's easy to deploy out of the box.
What about the implementation team?
We help our clients with the implementation.
What was our ROI?
As a reseller, I can't speak to ROI.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Licensing is great, even with the additional cost of data cloud services and the cloud console. As customers adapt to that and bring more cloud into their management plane, it's easy to see why many have moved to the cloud base, which is where customers want to be.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We have a lot of customers who are looking at Pure and other storage vendors. The ease of use and ease to provision alongside rock-solid support make Allertra a standout.
What other advice do I have?
I'm a reseller, not a customer.
I'd rate the solution ten out of ten. It's easy to set up with a rock-solid performance. InfoSight is a clear differentiator compared to all the other storage companies.

Great deduplication, reduces our footprint, and offers good cost savings
Pros and Cons
- "One of the best benefits I can think of is that the support team is top-tier."
- "I'd like to see a smaller chassis in the hybrid arrays."
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use the solution for virtualization storage.
How has it helped my organization?
We have different use cases and 30 locations around the country. We use it to either replicate back from site to site or keep our footprint small at the edge.
What is most valuable?
The deduplication is very good. The array replication and V-wall storage are also really useful.
We've been able to reduce our footprint. We get 4X on each array times 30.
The cost savings are pretty good. It does allow us to store more than we normally would.
One of the best benefits I can think of is that the support team is top-tier. We've had a lot of good experiences with support, which I can't say for some other vendors.
It's pretty good at predicting and preventing problems. We can receive notifications on most of our problems, and, if not before, very soon after. Most of our problems are just failures such as power failures. We tend to receive notifications just before or right on time. If we didn't get those notifications our environment would be down.
The guarantee of data availability is very important to us. Data runs everything.
It's helped reduce the time spent on provisioning by over 50%. The way that we use it is mainly through the plugin into vCenter. It makes the provisioning of new data storage infinitely faster.
The solution has improved our storage performance in terms of IOPS. When I started, we had some other vendor arrays that were not as great, moving to Alletra, it's improved. We're a big SQL shop, so we're running all their secret reports and all that faster. That's always a plus for the business.
Alletra helps reduce the time spent resolving storage-related support tickets.
What needs improvement?
I'd like to see a smaller chassis in the hybrid arrays. The one they have is a legacy chassis and is a lot bigger than it should be.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the solution for five years. We were originally Nimble customers. We've used a variety of versions, from the C1000s up to the Alletra 530s.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It's a very stable system. We have no complaints.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is fully scalable. There's no issue adding additional shelving, and we've had zero downtime.
How are customer service and support?
Alletra suport is excellent. They are always responsive and knowledgeable, and our issues are resolved in a few hours. I don't dread opening support tickets with them.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We have used EMC and NetApp. We moved all storage over to Alletra. We wanted continuity. We have a small team and Alletra has made it easier to train people when using one platform.
How was the initial setup?
We deployed the solution ourselves. It's really easy to set up and the documentation is step by step. Getting it from out of the box to up and functional we can do in 30 minutes or less.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I don't know what the pricing is.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We haven't recently evaluated other solutions. The transition was already in motion when I took things over. We don't have plans to change.
What other advice do I have?
I'd rate the solution nine out of ten overall. It's reliable, has good uptime, and nice features. It doesn't cause me problems.

Provides effortless management and excellent customer support for warehouse operations
Pros and Cons
- "The benefit of HPE Alletra Storage is that it doesn't need much management."
- "The only challenge was having to register with GreenLake, even though we weren't using it. Some places didn't have access to the internet - and if you don't have access to the internet, how can you register? If you can't register, you can't create data storage. This was one of the big drawbacks."
- "The only challenge was having to register with GreenLake, even though we weren't using it. Some places didn't have access to the internet - and if you don't have access to the internet, how can you register? If you can't register, you can't create data storage. This was one of the big drawbacks."
What is our primary use case?
My main use cases for HPE Alletra Storage are for warehouses.
How has it helped my organization?
It benefits my organization by reducing management needs.
What is most valuable?
The features of HPE Alletra Storage that I appreciate the most involve less management. The benefit of HPE Alletra Storage is that it doesn't need much management.
HPE Alletra Storage is effective since it automatically has deduplication, requiring less management, and requires minimal effort; after purchase, it automatically provides deduplication, compression, and related functionality.
It helps reduce data management operation expenses. I manage 30 remotely and it's easy to manage now.
We can reduce time spent on capacity planning.
The capacity efficiency is pretty good. There's less management. You don't have to do anything.
We get cloud-like management on-prem.
What needs improvement?
I'm not sure how the solution could be improved. I'm not looking for new features. It's doing the job.
The only challenge was having to register with GreenLake, even though we weren't using it. Some places didn't have access to the internet - and if you don't have access to the internet, how can you register? If you can't register, you can't create data storage. This was one of the big drawbacks.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using HPE Alletra Storage for about three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
HPE Alletra Storage has been stable and reliable. I've never had any issues or crashes; it continues doing its work.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have more than we need. In a couple of places, we had to add another shelf and that was very plug-and-play.
How are customer service and support?
I would evaluate customer service and technical support for HPE Alletra Storage as excellent.
HPE Alletra has much better service than 3PAR and others.
On a scale from one to ten, I would rate customer service and technical support at a ten. When you call, you don't have to go from person to person. With 3PAR and others, you call and they direct you to another person, then level one, level two, level three, which can be frustrating. With HPE Alletra or Nimble, the person who answers your call can handle level one, level two, and level three support; they can do anything.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Prior to adopting HPE Alletra Storage, I was using HPE MSA to address similar needs. We also used Nimble. We wanted better performance and scalability.
How was the initial setup?
My experience with deploying HPE Alletra Storage is that it's really easy. It's a one-click process and not difficult to configure.
There was a simple configuration process; there is not much to do as it's an easy setup.
What was our ROI?
I have not seen a return on investment with HPE Alletra Storage.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I didn't purchase the solution; I don't have pricing experience.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I used to have EMC, however, then we used Nimble for smaller places, which was awesome. These were the other solutions I considered before selecting HPE Alletra Storage.
The positive standout in my evaluation process when comparing these options was that HPE Alletra Storage requires very little work and is easily manageable remotely. I am not aware of any drawbacks of any of the solutions.
What other advice do I have?
My advice to other organizations considering HPE Alletra Storage would be to make it more efficient, make it easier to manage, make it more reliable, and have better service.
On a scale of one to ten, I rate HPE Alletra Storage an eight.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

The configuration capacity it has to create a cluster for replication is excellent
Pros and Cons
- "The configuration capacity it has to create a cluster for replication is excellent."
- "Maybe they could just reduce the number of racks and the amount of rack space."
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use the solution for our data warehouse. We had a latency problem with data warehouse services. We had 3PAR and we migrated everything to [HPE] Alletra [Storage]. The latency that Alletra gives us is much lower than that given by 3PAR and it has managed to support the number of IOPs generated by the service.
How has it helped my organization?
The execution response times of data warehouse tasks have improved, and the reports have been produced on time as required by the Bank.
What is most valuable?
The configuration capacity it has to create a cluster for replication is excellent.
The latency it gives me is incredible.
Alletra provides a cloud-like operational model on-prem for managing data infrastructure. In terms of administration, we can do stuff from anywhere; we do not need to be on the local management network. That is one of the best benefits. So is the whole subject of team status reports through "GreenLake.
The guarantee of data availability to our organization is important. I work in a financial area, so protecting data is the most valuable task the bank has and we feel safe with Alletra.
Alletra helped reduce the time in storage provisioning. We have reduced it by two hours. Before switching solutions, it used to take us two to three hours, and we have reduced it to about 15 minutes with Alletra.
Alletra improved our storage performance in terms of IOPs. It has been reduced, however, I couldn't say by how much right now. I do know that with the storage we had before, we were already saturated with 30,000 IOPs, whereas with Alletra we have put 50,000 IOPs in it and it has worked well.
What needs improvement?
I haven't found anything that could be improved. It's a good product overall. We didn't buy it for production purposes. We wanted to use it for development. That said, due to the efficiency it has, the company is already thinking about putting it into production.
Maybe they could just reduce the number of racks and the amount of rack space.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've used the solution for two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
To date, we have not generated any cases for Alletra, which means it has given us 100% stability. In these past two years, Alletra has never generated any cases for us in terms of stability issues - which is a very good sign.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have not had the opportunity to require more resources at the moment.
How are customer service and support?
Support is excellent. It is easy to ask for help, and the response we receive is very specific. We do not give the situation much thought or go back and forth about it.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We used 3PAR. We changed to a new technology due to obsolescence more than any other reason.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was relatively simple. After installation, there were not many configurations. We were quickly up and running. The support was very good.
What about the implementation team?
We used the help of a third-party vendor and received good attention.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The issue of price and cost is handled by another area; I am from the technical side.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We evaluated Dell and Pure Storage. With Pure Storage the difference was the price. With Dell, the difference was mostly in the number of IOPs supported by Alletra and the type of rack they used.
What other advice do I have?
I give Alletra a ten out of ten. I have no complaints about Alletra at this time as it exceeded our expectations.
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Microsoft Azure
