Good price, fast, and works very well with our environment
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature is the integration with vCenter with the HPE multi-storage plugin. That makes it more comfortable to use the storage with just a few clicks."
  • "One problem we had during the installation of HPE Alletra Storage was the connection to the cloud. Our company does not like cloud connections for storage, but it was necessary. It would be a good thing to start without the GreenLake cloud."

What is our primary use case?

Our main use case is virtualization. We have integrated it. We have iSCSI in our VMware environment, and we also tried OpenNebula. It is KVM-based. That is the main use case for us.

How has it helped my organization?

It helps the organization to deploy storage LUNs faster and with less effort.

Data availability is very important for us. We do not want to lose any data. The data has to be present nearly 100%. Since we have been using Alletra and Nimble storage, we never had an error.

HPE Alletra Storage has helped reduce the time spent on storage provisioning. Before this, providing storage LUNs took 20 to 30 minutes, whereas now, it takes less than 5 minutes.

HPE Alletra Storage has improved our storage performance in terms of IOPS.

Since we have had HPE Alletra Storage, there have been only two tickets. It is the same with Nimble. In eight years, there was only one hard disk error. With storage from other companies, we had more tickets, so it was a good decision to go for HPE Alletra Storage.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the integration with vCenter with the HPE multi-storage plugin. That makes it more comfortable to use the storage with just a few clicks. Previously, we had to configure it in vCenter or we had to configure it on Nimble or other storage like MSA. This is the most comfortable feature for us.

What needs improvement?

One problem we had during the installation of HPE Alletra Storage was the connection to the cloud. Our company does not like cloud connections for storage, but it was necessary. It would be a good thing to start without the GreenLake cloud.

Reduces downtime, offers good rack density, and has a 100% data availability guarantee
Pros and Cons
  • "The workload consolidation is very simple to manage."
  • "The solution could improve the upgrades. In Brazil, it's difficult. The price is very high and it is not an easy process."

What is our primary use case?

We sell the system to our call center in Brazil.

How has it helped my organization?

The workload consolidation is very simple to manage. Previously, the customer had four Nimble storage solutions, and we were able to consolidate them into one Alletra.

What is most valuable?

InfoSight reduces downtime.

Customers are happy with the speed and management of the storage.

The DSCC is good.

It offers good density on the rack. It's a very dense storage.

The solution offers a cloud-like operational model on-prem for managing data. The management is easier. The DSCC helps a lot. It simplifies the storage process. The customer has GreenLake and they can easily see the costs of Alletra storage by workload.

Alletra is good at predicting and preventing problems. InfoSight, via the portal, helps with this. We don't need to access the equipment. InfoSight will automatically generate a ticket, and the engineer will call us if there are issues. The process is automatic, and it prevents downtime.

The data availability guarantee is helpful for us, as resellers. It helps us convince the customers the product is very good and well-built.

The solution helps prevent time spent on storage provisioning. It's simple to deploy. Compared to 3PAR, we spend 80% less time on storage provisioning. In 3PAR, you need to provision the CPGs, select rate levels, and manage the free space, which is very complex. Alletra simplifies all of that with a single console.

It's improved our storage performance. We have a 3PAR hybrid. Alletra is new equipment with more speed and all-flash. We've improved our IOPS from 10,000 to 8,000.

What needs improvement?

The solution could improve the upgrades. In Brazil, it's difficult. The price is very high and it is not an easy process.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for two to three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is excellent. It's 100% stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

For some projects, we need to put in two or three systems. They could improve the scalability in terms of space.

How are customer service and support?

In Brazil, the SLAs are not being met. Tickets are delayed a lot. It's not so good. We call support, mail them, et cetera, and they do not answer. Last week, a ticket that needed to be solved in six hours took one week.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Our clients previously used Nimble. We're also familiar with 3PAR.

How was the initial setup?

We use fiber channels. The deployment process is fairly straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

HPE managed the deployment process. As resellers, we assisted our clients with setup.

What was our ROI?

I have not witnessed an ROI as our customers would have more visibility on that. However, I have heard the performance is one area customers are impressed with. The speed improves the customer experience and they can build out their strategy faster and change strategies as needed.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing and licensing are not my area of expertise. I'm an architect. However, the pricing is a bit more complex in Brazil and there are a lot of taxes. It's not cheap.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We're a reseller of HPE, so we only deal with HPE solutions.

What other advice do I have?

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten. If they had 50% more scalability in a single system, it would be ideal.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Microsoft Azure

Reduces storage provisioning time, fast to install, and good support
Pros and Cons
  • "Since we've implemented the solution, we've had zero downtime on the arrays."
  • "It could use improvement in correctly identifying and naming the systems. The solution keeps changing the names of everything. It's been hard to track."

What is our primary use case?

I use the solution for cheap and deep tier-two VMware storage. I use it for smaller SQL databases as well.

How has it helped my organization?

Since we've implemented the solution, we've had zero downtime on the arrays. We get high-quality replication and a quality product overall.

What is most valuable?

I like InfoSight and now the new GreenLake management platform to help me manage all my arrays in one location.

The product provides a cloud-like operational model on-prem for managing data infrastructure. While I haven't used the on-prem cloud model myself, I've heard it's good.

It's good at preventing problems. The support is really good. They actually fix 90% of errors and remotely fix them. They get there first and log in and I am told before I know there's a failed drive.

It has reduced time spent on storage provisioning. I give VMware admins access to provision their own data storage.

Alletra has improved storage performance for IOPs. I've been using the hybrids and get really good IOPs performance out of the hybrid models. It's even comparable to the Pure X50 systems.

It's helped us reduce the time spent on storage-related support tickets. We rarely have tickets now. We've reduced them by 70% or so.

What needs improvement?

It could use improvement in correctly identifying and naming the systems. The solution keeps changing the names of everything. It's been hard to track.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is very good. It's very stable. I'd like to have a more of a hands-off support solution - an HP technician replace option.

How are customer service and support?

Customer support is very good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were a Nimble customer previously.

How was the initial setup?

The deployment and implementation were very easy. It went really fast.

What was our ROI?

We have witnessed an ROI. Our ROI is down to two years on the purchase.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is okay. There's not really a smaller-scale model for mid-tier and upper capacities. That said, the pricing is comparable to everyone else.

What other advice do I have?

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten. It would be a ten out of ten if they could do block and file on the same system.

Management capabilities improve data operations and integration
Pros and Cons
  • "HPE Alletra Storage provides a cloud-like operational model on-prem for managing data operations, such as deployment, provisioning, and data management."
  • "I don't have the numbers to quantify how much HPE Alletra Storage has reduced our data management operation expenses."

What is our primary use case?

We are using HPE Alletra Storage as a block storage to our virtualization environment, in the central data center and in the hospital data centers too.

What is most valuable?

It is much easier to manage HPE Alletra Storage systems compared to the storages before, such as the 3PAR storage. Previously, virtual machines needed to be running to manage this. With HPE Alletra Storage, it's cloud integrated, so it's easier to make it up and running. In the healthcare sector, we have just a few engineers, so the human capacity is under the normal or wanted level, and with these automated technologies, these integrated features of HPE Alletra Storage help us to integrate the new systems to our systems.

HPE Alletra Storage has made it much easier to operate this system compared to before, which has reduced our data management operation expenses. HPE Alletra Storage has helped reduce the time spent on capacity planning, but we often use system integrators to help us with the capacity planning and the newest technologies make it easier. We have a lot of data in healthcare, so HPE Alletra Storage helps us to reduce the cost by facilitating the management of duplications.

HPE Alletra Storage provides a cloud-like operational model on-prem for managing data operations, such as deployment, provisioning, and data management. I'm currently planning to deploy private cloud-like operations to the hospitals because they don't have engineers, storage engineers, compute engineers, virtualization engineers, and with this cloud technology, the operational aspects could be much easier.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

HPE Alletra Storage is absolutely stable and reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

HPE Alletra Storage does scale with our growing needs. Currently, there is no plan to expand the usage of HPE Alletra Storage; it's enough for the current deployment.

How are customer service and support?

We have no problems with the customer support for HPE Alletra Storage. We always can reach the Hungarian support team, and if needed, they can ask for help from other engineers, so it's fast and effective.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

When we adopted HPE Alletra Storage, we were using another solution similar. We were using 3PAR, and we are changing our 3PAR storages to HPE Alletra Storage.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

In hospitals, we're using Dell solutions for storage, and we have HPE solutions. If a hospital is using Dell infrastructures, we try to upgrade it to a homogeneous platform, so we're planning with Dell. But in our central data centers, we are using HPE solutions, and there were no other solutions we found that could be better for us, so we are thinking about HPE technologies.

What other advice do I have?

The management capabilities of the storage system might be the most preferred feature of HPE Alletra Storage. We have not used the AI features of HPE GreenLake AIOps yet, but we are planning to use it and implement it in the operational part. I don't have the numbers to quantify how much HPE Alletra Storage has reduced our data management operation expenses. I'm not up to date with topics regarding pricing, setup costs, and licensing for HPE Alletra Storage. However, I have no problems with it, as our HPE contact can answer all of the questions we have. On a scale of 1-10, I rate HPE Alletra Storage a 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Provides storage efficiency, simplified management, and good performance
Pros and Cons
  • "It is simple to manage and integrate with our virtualization platform. There is also the storage efficiency."
  • "I do not have any requirements. They can maybe have more flexibility for configurations or things like that."

What is our primary use case?

We have a virtualization platform running over there.

How has it helped my organization?

It is very easy to manage, so we spend less time going over it. It does not require very specific and advanced storage knowledge to get involved. It is easy to start using it. Creating VMs or new data storage clusters is very simple from the virtualization platform, so we save time. Also, thanks to the protection and snapshot, we can also quickly recover from ransomware attacks or things like that.

HPE Alletra Storage provides a cloud-like operational model on-prem for managing data infrastructure. I can monitor and manage whatever I need at home. It helps a lot. I do not need to open a VPN connection or any kind of connection to know what is going on. I can manage my platform remotely.

We have protection and snapshots. InfoSight alerts us on any issues that could be there. We get to know what is going on.

HPE Alletra Storage has helped reduce the time spent on storage provisioning. Instead of a couple of hours, we can do storage provisions in 15 minutes.

HPE Alletra Storage has improved our storage performance in terms of IOPs. We have much more than what we need.

HPE Alletra Storage has helped reduce the time spent resolving storage-related support tickets. The InfoSight information that we have and the performance-related capabilities that we have seen help us a lot. When we know a problem, we also know where the issue is and what is causing the issue, so an open case takes a couple of hours rather than a couple of days.

What is most valuable?

It is simple to manage and integrate with our virtualization platform. There is also the storage efficiency. We are saving in terms of storage capacity. It is very easy, and we get the performance for the requirements that we are having.

What needs improvement?

We are using it as much as we need. I do not have any requirements. They can maybe have more flexibility for configurations or things like that.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using HPE Alletra Storage for a year and a half.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We never have any issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We do not need to scale. We would have had to scale if we could buy a smaller one. It is enough for us.

How are customer service and support?

Everything is great. Sometimes we get an email saying that we are having an issue on a drive or something else even before we realize it. Nowadays, when we are having an issue, most of the time, we also have a solution. It is great.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have used 3PAR from HPE or MSA. We needed to perform a refresh. Most of our use cases were VMware-related, we wanted to integrate data management capacities and capabilities. That is why we moved. We received everything that we needed.

What was our ROI?

We have seen an ROI. We have started to take away the old storage solution. We have simplified management. For anyone new to the company, it is very easy to understand what is going on, how to manage, how to get access and know what it is doing. The onboarding time is saved. We require less training and there are also fewer errors because they understand what they are doing. It is a simple management environment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Its licensing is good. Pricing-wise, there can be a little bit more flexibility. It would help to have different sizes. However, it fits into the budget that we have, so we are happy.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate HPE Alletra Storage a nine out of ten because there is always room to improve, but we are happy with what we are receiving from Alletra and how simple it is to manage. The optimization of the storage means that we do not need to scale and grow. We are not looking for new refreshments or upgrades on the platform. All my colleagues are also confident about what they are doing over there. We like the environment.

  • "HPE Alletra Storage helps simplify storage operations, integrating with vCenter."

What is our primary use case?

We are running different types of workloads on HPE Alletra Storage, and it provides us with good performance.

    What is most valuable?

We purpose-built it for a specific requirement, consuming features like encryption and deduplication between sites. It offers good deduplication ratios, comparing well with Pure Storage. HPE Alletra Storage helps simplify storage operations, integrating with vCenter. Many modern storages provide a unified view, which we utilize. Overall, it has streamlined our analysis process, thanks to automation and reporting features.

For how long have I used the solution?

We recently started consuming HPE Alletra Storage.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

HPE Alletra Storage provides predictable performance and capacity.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have not faced any scalability issues with HPE Alletra Storage.

How are customer service and support?

HPE technical support is good, with no complaints so far.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We already had Pure Storage and replaced Nimble Storage, leading us to adopt HPE Alletra Storage for the upgrade.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward, taking about two and a half weeks from data center configuration to full provisioning and testing.

    What about the implementation team?

Our internal team handled the deployment. The backend physical setup was simpler, while the process took time for completion.

    What was our ROI?

I will know more about ROI in a couple of months as we recently commissioned the storage. So far, it is breaking even with our investment plans.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I cannot quantify the cost reduction yet, but modern storages come with many features that benefit customers.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

The consideration was an upgrade from Nimble, and so we evaluated HPE Alletra Storage.

What other advice do I have?

I rate HPE Alletra Storage an eight or nine. I would like to see further support for features like ransomware protection. Exploring Alletra MP in the future could be beneficial. The current interface is satisfactory.

Competitive pricing, works well with VMware, and offers very good performance
    Pros and Cons
    • "The GUI for onboarding is straightforward."
    • "For the 6000, we'd like to see active-active controllers."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for VMware virtualization.

How has it helped my organization?

It [HPE Alletra Storage] offers more performance and better value for money than Nimble Gen 5 arrays. It's very stable.

    What is most valuable?

The VMware integration is very good. Not all arrays have such a good integration.

The GUI for onboarding is straightforward.

We chose the 6000 with local GUI over the 9000.
As for the 9000 you need to use DSCC to manage the arrays.

The solution does provide a cloud-like operational model on-prem. We haven't used it so much since we have built own on-prem tools and do not really need management software in the cloud. We prefer our own data centers for data and management sovereignty. That way, if there's a major incident where we have to cut off the Internet connection. Then it's a bad thing to have the management software in the cloud.

It's good for predicting and preventing problems before there are major issues. We like that HPE can collect the data and we get information to see if something is prone to errors. That way, we don't have to be the first ones to experience errors. We get a heads-up.

The DSCC solution helps reduce time spent on storage provisioning. However, VMware has also improved on with VMware vVols, and so the impact is minimal for us.

Alletra has helped with improving the storage performance. It offers good storage performance overall.

    What needs improvement?

For the 6000, we'd like to see active-active controllers. For the 9000, Alletra has it. Yet it doesn't offer the superior agile functionality of the 6000.

For how long have I used the solution?

I started using the solution when they first came out in 2021. I used to use Nimble before that.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    The stability is great.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It could scale a bit better regards to VMware vVols.

How are customer service and support?

They offer really good support. One of the reasons we went with 6000 was due to the fact that they kept Nimble support.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used Nimble Gen5. With this solution we got better performance for value.

    How was the initial setup?

    Setup was easy and straightforward.

    What about the implementation team?

    We implemented it ourselves.

    What was our ROI?

We have witnessed an ROI, although I do not have concrete metrics.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is competitive. Compared to Pure Systems, it's less expensive.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not evaluate other options before choosing Alletra.

What other advice do I have?

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten. It offers good performance and support.

Good integrations, helpful reporting, and helps save time spent on storage usage
    Pros and Cons
    • "It's got an integration with InfoSight."
    • "I would like to see some form of direct connect fiber channel options."

What is our primary use case?

The solution is our primary storage for virtualization.

    What is most valuable?

It's got an integration with InfoSight. There are metrics that are provided by it and the support that we get from Nimble Alletra Support is great. The insights we get are important. All of the reporting we get and the recommendations we get on performance impacts are helpful. It predicts problems and helps prevent issues.

It's helped us save time spent on storage usage. Due to its integration, we've had an 80% to 90% reduction in storage provisioning time.

It's helped improve IOPs. We size the solution properly and customers have been happy with the results.

    What needs improvement?

I would like to see some form of direct connect fiber channel options.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used Alletra Storage for a long time.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is good. There are options.

How are customer service and support?

Support is fantastic for Allerta. Everything else from HPE isn't as good.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Our customers are switching from other vendor options. I've been recommending Alletra to them.

I have experience with other storage solutions within the HPE family. I haven't used other vendors. Alletra is top-notch within the HPE family in terms of performance and support.

    How was the initial setup?

I've deployed the solution before. An Alletra by itself is simple to implement. When partnered with dHCI, it's a bit more complex.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is good for the market that I serve. The subscription model is tough for them. We can do multiple terms now.

What other advice do I have?

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten.
