Excellent uptime, guaranteed data availability, and knowledgable support
Pros and Cons
  • "The uptime is excellent."
  • "It would be great if we had a direct integration with Veeam repositories so we wouldn't have to go through Linux or Windows."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for our VMware storage. We have different networks and systems.

How has it helped my organization?

The solution offers such a small footprint and good deduplication. We went down from a whole rack to half a rack and it has just as much performance as all flash.

What is most valuable?

The uptime is excellent. We had a demo and never had a problem. It stayed up and running.

Alletra helps prevent and predict problems. We've had several cases open up with just the firmware or hardware, and we've had amazing adjustments so far. They've let us know when there's an issue. InfoSight has been great.

The guaranteed data availability was a point to discuss when we were trying to decide what solution to go with.

We've been able to reduce the time spent on storage provisioning by 50%. We don't have to create storage groups or anything like that.

Alletra improved storage performance in terms of IOPs by at least 75%.

Alletra has helped us reduce the time spent resolving storage-related support tickets by 50%.

What needs improvement?

The solution could disable having to be on the internet to activate for GreenLake.

It would be great if we had a direct integration with Veeam repositories so we wouldn't have to go through Linux or Windows.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for five or six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of Alletra is very good. We've only had two hours of downtime on one specific use case in all the years we have had it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability isn't something I've had to do. We've only added a shelf, and that's easy. You just plug it in and activate.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support has been good. I do get an engineer every time I call and they already know what the problem is.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used EMC. Then we moved to Nimble.

How was the initial setup?

The deployment was simple. Getting wired up you can do everything from your web console. We did a demo with Nimble and took it from there.

What was our ROI?

We have witnessed an ROI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

In the beginning, the licensing was great, however, now it's HPE. We used to have two line items: hardware and support. Now there are so many more. It's more complex.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated Pure Storage, Nimble, and a few others. Pure was expensive, and Nimble gave us what we wanted for the price.

What other advice do I have?

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten. I would recommend it to others. When I talk to colleagues in IT, it's something I recommend. It's been easy to work with.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Microsoft Azure

Simple to manage, stable and offers high speed for transferring data
Pros and Cons
  • "It offers rich features and high speed for transferring data."
  • "We had some issues while installing it on our servers. It required more resources while cross-checking. So, the initial setup process could be better."

What is our primary use case?

My experience with it has been good. I primarily use it as a storage backend for my applications. I like it for that purpose.

How has it helped my organization?

It's been important for automating some of our workloads. For example, we had some heavy processes that would sometimes crash. Alletra has made managing those easier.

What is most valuable?

I like that it's simple to manage. It offers rich features and high speed for transferring data.

What needs improvement?

We had some issues while installing it on our servers. It required more resources while cross-checking. So, the initial setup process could be better. Sometimes, it has trouble discovering other servers; it would be nice if there were a way to streamline the connection process.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using it for a year. I use it in my company.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability a nine out of ten. It is a stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This product offers good scalability. I would rate the scalability an eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

The support team is great. But the response time could be faster.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

We had some issues while configuring it.  It takes a while to get that working correctly. It would be helpful to have clearer instructions or a configuration wizard for that part.

We have it configured as a cloud solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There is a license. HPE Alletra uses a cloud-based model. This means I'm focused on procuring on-demand resources for customers. As such, for future use, we bill based on device consumption rather than the traditional datacenter model.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate the solution a nine out of ten. I would recommend using the solution. First, this solution can be tailored for specific business needs. Secondly, it excels as a standard server for data management.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

Good performance, low learning curve, and helpful support
Pros and Cons
  • "Clients like the insights tools within the solution that came from Nimble and were pulled in."
  • "They are starting to add more blocking tools. It's lacking natively, however, they seem to be adding in more."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution as a hybrid cloud.

How has it helped my organization?

It's easy to do a tiered storage for caching, et cetera. Clients find it easily expandable in size. They can start small and layer on.

What is most valuable?

Clients like the insights tools within the solution that came from Nimble and were pulled in.

Once it's set up, it's easy to make changes from the cloud interface.

You get alerts and can easily find out what's important and what's noise.

Alletra helps clients reduce time spent on storage provisioning. As a partner, we set it up for them and help design it. Some remain clients, and we continue to maintain it. Other smaller teams take it on themselves, yet they can pick it up pretty quickly.

It's easier, with the insights to figure out where you are having a problem. Before, it was hard to figure out where the bottleneck was. This provides better visibility.

What needs improvement?

They are starting to add more blocking tools. It's lacking natively, however, they seem to be adding in more. The more they can integrate it into one dashboard, the easier it will be for the client.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is generally bulletproof with easy upgrades.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is excellent. A nice piece of Green Lake is adding cloud scalability without having to redo anything on-prem.

How are customer service and support?

We sometimes wrap our service with HPE Quickstart. They are generally good.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Some clients have used older HPE. Others have used older Dell EMC products. Many change to Alletra based on GreenLake as it offers a combined platform.

The performance of Alletra is very good. Once it's set up, it's very good.

How was the initial setup?

We've been doing smaller implementations. The initial setup itself is pretty easy once you know what you are doing. The learning curve is okay. When GreenLake first came out and we first started integrating it, it was bumpy. It's easier now.

What about the implementation team?

We help our clients deploy the product.

What was our ROI?

Most clients gain ROI by gaining efficiency within their own teams.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't directly deal with pricing. The cost is not very cheap, however, people tend to see the benefit of it.

What other advice do I have?

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Impressive speed and the reliability is excellent
Pros and Cons
  • "The stability of the solution is rock-solid."
  • "It was fairly difficult to migrate the data from 3PAR over."

What is our primary use case?

We were replacing our 3PAR with Alletra.

How has it helped my organization?

Alletra has mainly helped our organization by offering us improved performance.

What is most valuable?

The speed is very impressive. The reliability is excellent. We haven't had a single issue with it.

Alletra provides a cloud-like operational model on-prem. It hasn't affected operations.

It's very good at predicting and preventing problems. It's very robust. It notifies you of any issues at all. That said, we haven't had any early warnings. I've seen some messages. Overall, I'm pretty impressed at the proactiveness.

The guarantee of data availability has been important. To have that kind of guarantee is something we don't get from other vendors.

Alletra has helped reduce the time spent on storage and provisioning. 3PAR was pretty easy on this count as well. It does reduce maybe 25% or so.

The solution has improved our storage performance in terms of IOPs by about 15%.

We haven't had any storage-related support tickets.

What needs improvement?

I'd like to see a migration tool. That doesn't seem to be available on Alletra. It was fairly difficult to migrate the data from 3PAR over.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Alletra for about two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is rock-solid.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's really easy to expand Alletra on the fly. We don't have to take an outage, which is important.

How are customer service and support?

We haven't had any issues per se and haven't had to call support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used 3PAR. It was coming up on the end of life, which was why we switched.

How was the initial setup?

We got it up and running in just a few days.

Deploying was really straightforward. It's just a matter of hooking it up to the fabric and then learning the management interface. That was probably the biggest time-consuming factor - just learning the differences between the new management interface and 3PAR.

What about the implementation team?

We got the product through GreenLake. We had someone from HPE come out and provide a basic overview.

What was our ROI?

We have witnessed a bit of ROI since using Alletra.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing and cost weren't an issue at all.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We didn't really look at other solutions. We considered NetApp, however, it got eliminated quickly based on price and performance. Alletra was a lot better.

What other advice do I have?

I'd rate the solution ten out of ten based on the performance, reliability, and price point.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Good price, fast, and works very well with our environment
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature is the integration with vCenter with the HPE multi-storage plugin. That makes it more comfortable to use the storage with just a few clicks."
  • "One problem we had during the installation of HPE Alletra Storage was the connection to the cloud. Our company does not like cloud connections for storage, but it was necessary. It would be a good thing to start without the GreenLake cloud."

What is our primary use case?

Our main use case is virtualization. We have integrated it. We have iSCSI in our VMware environment, and we also tried OpenNebula. It is KVM-based. That is the main use case for us.

How has it helped my organization?

It helps the organization to deploy storage LUNs faster and with less effort.

Data availability is very important for us. We do not want to lose any data. The data has to be present nearly 100%. Since we have been using Alletra and Nimble storage, we never had an error.

HPE Alletra Storage has helped reduce the time spent on storage provisioning. Before this, providing storage LUNs took 20 to 30 minutes, whereas now, it takes less than 5 minutes.

HPE Alletra Storage has improved our storage performance in terms of IOPS.

Since we have had HPE Alletra Storage, there have been only two tickets. It is the same with Nimble. In eight years, there was only one hard disk error. With storage from other companies, we had more tickets, so it was a good decision to go for HPE Alletra Storage.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the integration with vCenter with the HPE multi-storage plugin. That makes it more comfortable to use the storage with just a few clicks. Previously, we had to configure it in vCenter or we had to configure it on Nimble or other storage like MSA. This is the most comfortable feature for us.

What needs improvement?

One problem we had during the installation of HPE Alletra Storage was the connection to the cloud. Our company does not like cloud connections for storage, but it was necessary. It would be a good thing to start without the GreenLake cloud.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using HPE Alletra Storage for about one year. Previously, we were using Nimble CS3000 and Nimble HF40.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is good. We can expand it using shelves.

How are customer service and support?

It is very good. If you open a ticket, you get a response soon. We had a problem during installation, and they were very fast.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were using Nimble CS3000 and Nimble HF40. About eight or nine years ago, we were using Open-E. It is an open storage solution. You can install it on ProLiant, but Alletra is much better.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

For us, its price is good.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not evaluate other solutions.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate HPE Alletra Storage a ten out of ten because it is a very stable solution, and we can use it very well in our environment. Integration is very good. It is very fast.

Excellent storage performance, reasonable cost, and helps predict problems
Pros and Cons
  • "It's been providing us with insanely fast storage."
  • "It would be great if it cost less."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution as a data center SAN.

How has it helped my organization?

It's been providing us with insanely fast storage. That's pretty important for a data center.

What is most valuable?

We have access to InfoSight. It provides immediate insight into what's going on in the array's incredible software.

It's good for predicting and preventing problems. It's pretty impressive that we end up getting proactive ticketing on some issues that occur right there on the array. That aspect is pretty great.

Alletra has helped our storage performance in terms of IOPs. We shifted from a hybrid to an NVMe. It's much, much faster.

What needs improvement?

It would be great if it cost less.

They shouldn't strip out anything from InfoSight. That is really helpful software to see how the storage arrays are performing and has helped us do a lot of troubleshooting. They should keep up the good work on the hardware side since it's great. However, the InfoSight software is really invaluable.

For how long have I used the solution?

We invested in Nimble originally and then transitioned to Alletra, so we've maybe used both for five years in total.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution has been rock-solid.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is very good.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support has been very helpful.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used the Nimble array. Before that, we had a component array. I wasn't there for the original conversation about switching six or seven years ago.

What was our ROI?

We've witnessed an ROI. The difference of what we run internally vs the cloud is night and day difference in terms of cost.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The one-time buy-in is ideal for us. It makes a data center more compelling than a cloud, as the costs are known. A lot of businesses have been shifting to a service model. While I get the appeal from the finance side, that will only expedite a team's move to cloud services. If I'm paying monthly for something that's on-prem and I'm paying monthly for something that's in the cloud, I'll just shift my infrastructure needs to the cloud. Yet the costs will change. However, the predictability of having that one-time cost is everything for the data center.

What other advice do I have?

I'd rate Alletra ten out of ten. If we ended up not thinking it was best in class, we would have moved away from it.

Reasonably priced, very easy to use, and perfect for our organization
Pros and Cons
  • "Ease of utilization and ease of backup are valuable. You just plug it in, run a few commands, and set it up. It is done."
  • "When you configure it, the system has to be connected to the Internet. Otherwise, you cannot configure it. That is the most difficult part. They need to have something that does not require a connection to the Internet."

What is our primary use case?

HPE Alletra 6000 that we are using used to be Nimble. We have warehouses. We have 100 employees or something like that. We have 3 servers and about 50 VMs. For that, it is a perfect fit.

How has it helped my organization?

They are stable systems. HPE Alletra 6000 is reasonably priced. It is a perfect fit for our organization.

There is a Call Home feature. If there are any issues, it connects directly to the remote support. That is helpful for me. I get alerted by HPE before I connect and get my alerts.

The guarantee of data availability is very important for any organization. If your storage system dies, the whole company shuts down.

It has helped reduce the time spent on storage provisioning. You plug it in, and with a few clicks, it is all configured within a few minutes. I do not have the metrics, but it does not take that long to configure.

It is very simple. It does not take much time to troubleshoot.

It has improved our storage performance in terms of IOPs. I cannot really compare it, but I do not have to worry about IOPs anymore.

It has not helped reduce the time spent resolving storage-related support tickets. It is the same as Nimble.

What is most valuable?

Ease of utilization and ease of backup are valuable. You just plug it in, run a few commands, and set it up. It is done.

What needs improvement?

Lately, I had trouble with the configuration. They have GreenLake, and you have to have the serial number connected to GreenLake. You have to connect to the cloud. When you configure it, the system has to be connected to the Internet. Otherwise, you cannot configure it. That is the most difficult part. They need to have something that does not require a connection to the Internet. Once you have configured it, then it should connect to the Internet or GreenLake, and that is fine. The problem for me is that I configure at a remote location where I do not have access to the Internet, but this requires the Internet.

For how long have I used the solution?

I used HPE Alletra 9000 about two and a half years ago, and I have been using HPE Alletra 6000 for about a year or so.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is very stable. I do not have any issues at all.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is pretty scalable. I have added more disks.

How are customer service and support?

It is hit-and-miss. Most of the time, I get good service, but sometimes, I get stuck. Occasionally, you run into a situation where people do not know what they are doing, and then you are stuck. When that happens, I get my reps, and they help me out. Overall, the service is great. It has improved.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I was using HPE. It was Nimble, and now it is Alletra, so we migrated from Nimble to Alletra.

How was the initial setup?

We have 5000 series. We are using a private cloud.

Its deployment is very simple. You just plug it in, click a few times, give an IP address, and you are all set up. It is no trouble at all.

What about the implementation team?

I deployed it myself.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is reasonably priced.

What other advice do I have?

HPE Alletra Storage provides a cloud-like operational model on-prem for managing data infrastructure. I have seen that, but it is not at all useful for me because my applications are very simple.

I would rate HPE Alletra Storage a ten out of ten. It is perfect for me in terms of the price range and utilization. It is easy to set up and easy to manage, and it gets the job done. There is only one issue. It requires GreenLake for configuration. They need to change that because sometimes, the end user is at a remote location without Internet access. It should not have anything to do with configuring the storage, but unfortunately, they are linked, and you are stuck.
