Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"This product has allowed us to recover data when we've had issues.""This is a very stable product.""Scalability, as well as stability, are a couple of important parts of this solution.""Commvault gives us a single platform to manage and recover our data. Since we are a research organization, backup is one of the most critical parts of our IT operations and services. Internally, we run it as a managed service, and there is a single console that makes it easy for management to see the performance.""Commvault can actually come in and assist you with aspects of the implementation - and they are quite helpful.""The initial setup is straightforward.""The diversity on offer is very, very good. Everything is supported. It's great.""All workloads can be integrated with Commvault. If we use a new technology, Commvault integrates with it. Commvault is a data management solution with support for building the DR side of things. With Commvault we can rapidly back up and restore any application we add to our environment."

"If you are looking for a backup solution, go with Druva because it's quite simple.""It's incredibly fast.""The recovery aspect of the solution is its most valuable feature.""It has a straightforward installation.""Our customers do not need to purchase third party storage or a separate server for data backup.""All the data is well encrypted. In addition, the data is split into pieces so that if an endpoint is attacked or compromised with any kind of ransomware, the compromised machine can be relocated or restored. All the data that was previously backed up can be restored from the cloud. It has a lot of security features. Druva currently offers only the cloud version on AWS. Being a cloud solution, Druva goes by a lot of security compliances and provides a security portfolio. People are very skeptical of the data security in cloud solutions, and Druva has given consideration to that. It has some good geo-location features. If a machine is lost, when the machine is switched on and connected to the internet, that machine can be geo-located and tracked. It also has got the geo-wipeout feature. If someone tries to take out the data from a lost machine, they won't be able to do that. The moment an IT admin comes to know that the machine is no longer with a user, he or she can auto-run the geo-wipeout feature so that the data cannot be read by any third party. Duality replication is a unique thing about this solution. Everybody's data is not backed up if the data is common. Similar data is not backed up from other machines. The data backup also happens very smoothly. The bandwidth choking is very less. When the data is getting backed up, the users do not even get to know. There is no impact even when the users are not using high-speed bandwidth."

Cons
"Persistent binding is a feature that I would like to see in the next release of Commvault.""The most common feedback I get in terms of Commvault is that it can be complex. I always refer my customers back to their own environment. Almost everything that goes into Commvault is a request by a customer. While it can be complex, it can also be very simple. You just need to understand your environment in order to make sure that you really need to turn on that extra feature or thing inside of Commvault. Maybe you don't need those things. It really depends on how simple or complex your environment is, whether you need all of Commvault's features.""We get an alarm if a lot of files are deleted, for example. That could look like ransomware, even if it is not.""The main area for improvement is that we sometimes experience negative effects from their updates. If they had a larger test area for their updates, that would help.""Sometimes the web page doesn't work. I don't know if it's an outage or if there is maintenance going on in the background. From time to time, Commvault will suddenly stop taking backups for some intervals.""We've faced problems backing up our virtual machines.""They should move the CommServe outside of Windows machines and the database should be distributed among servers. It's still a single point of failure.""I need documentation for Azure backups. One expectation that I have is regarding PDF documentation. When I was trying to browse the documentation, I could not locate that."

More Commvault Cons →

"The user quota is an area that needs to be improved.""The user quota is an area that needs to be improved.""The backup time is very poor. The backup runs continuously. It goes on from morning till night. The system performance also becomes very poor when Druva inSync is running. When the backup starts, the systems become very slow. You cannot work while the backup is going on. After the backup is complete, the system performance picks up again. I raised this issue with Druva, but they are not able to resolve this issue. They should analyze the reason for this kind of problem. They have asked for too many error logs, but how do we get logs from the laptops of the users who are unavailable because they are not working from a centralized office, or they are at a customer site or are traveling? Such users can only communicate through emails. This problem is not related to just one user; it is related to every user. There are so many problems in the Druva inSync patches. Sometimes, the software gets uninstalled automatically, and we are not able to find it on the client system. The users say that they didn't uninstall the software. So, how do we find out who uninstalled the software? If the Druva inSync client is installed on the system, the users should not have the right to uninstall the patch. There should be a security system and an admin panel so that the Druva inSync software is locked when it is installed on the client system. Users should not uninstall it unknowingly. A user should be able to uninstall it only after providing a password set by the administrator. They have given many other restrictions, such as a user cannot restore the data from his laptop, or a user cannot remove the snapshot from his laptop. They can also provide a restriction for uninstalling Druva inSync.""The support of other cloud services needs to be improved. It has very good cloud support for AWS but not with others.""If I could have an accelerator or something to back up the solution on the cloud, that would be helpful. Also, it would be helpful if the accelerator could give me a buffer of a couple of days for any kind of immediate recovery on an offsite.""Druva inSync is very high in price. A general customer cannot afford this solution. Even if the product is good, people cannot afford such a high cost just for taking the backup. This is a recurring investment, and the customers have to pay for it every year. Druva is also yet to develop the channel and the channel or partner commitment."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."
  • "Our yearly cost is around €20,000... The cost is based on the number of users and the amount of data. They sell it per terabyte."
  • "There is a bit of cost involved with signing up the entire solution. It's not a cheap solution."
  • "Commvault licensing is a perpetual license so only the support is being renewed yearly."
  • "The complete license gives us options for all the features. Commvault does not license based on storage or the management components. It can integrate with any storage vendor. That means that when we are out of storage and need more, we can integrate without additional licensing. In my opinion, Commvault needs to reduce the licensing cost by 20 to 40 percent to make it cost-efficient."
  • "We went from Veritas NetBackup to Commvault. We switched due to upfront licensing and costs. We have more visibility into what we're actually purchasing. It seemed like, overall, the cost of Commvault was cheaper."
  • "It is cheaper than Veeam."
  • "It was not very popular because of its previous cost, but they have been working on the pricing, and now anyone can afford to use Commvault. They changed the modeling criteria for their pricing. Previously, there was only the capacity modeling based on your content capacity. In this case, they would give you a license and you would have to pay it. Now, most of the environment is virtualized so you can have the best CPU, VMs, etc. You buy whatever you need and pay for what you need."

  • "The price is quite good, It's approximately $4000.00 per user for one year."
  • "It's approximately $4000.00 per user for one year."
  • "The pricing of Druva inSync is very high as compared to other cloud backup solutions."
  • "It is an expensive product for the middle class or SMB customers in India. A lot of top-level big companies also cannot afford this solution. During the license period, one can download the entire data from the cloud without paying any additional cost. This way the data can be easily recreated from the stored data when a machine is lost or the data is compromised."
