We use the solution as a backup storage.
Senior Manager at a logistics company with 10,001+ employees
A highly stable and scalable solution for backup storage
What is our primary use case?
What needs improvement?
The solution needs to take care of encryptions between client and server transactions in a much stronger way because security is a concern.
The solution could function to read the data from other tools or appliances. For example, I have other enrollment backup tools or backup plans stored elsewhere. That would be a valuable integration feature if we could read the data from those tools or plans and import it into NetBackup Appliance, that would be a valuable integration feature.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Veritas NetBackup Appliance for nine to ten years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The product is stable. We have not faced any such problems in our environment.
I rate the solution’s stability an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution’s scalability is good.
I rate the solution’s scalability an eight out of ten.
How are customer service and support?
We had a bad experience with the NetBackup Appliance because of our local partner. When we bought it from our client's first level, we were never told it would be end-of-life within two to three years. When the application arrived, we were told that it was already out of support and could not be upgraded and that we would need to replace it.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We had a Nagato solution before, but it was too complex. So, we evaluated Veritas and found it suitable for our environment.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is neither simple nor complicated. When you define backup policies for multiple environments in the same organization, such as a DC-DR environment with various DNS servers, the policy can be complex if you require multiple levels of backups.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The product’s pricing is high.
Veritas NetBackup Appliance pricing is based on licensing structure determined by storage size.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Offers good connectivity, easy to use and stable solution
Pros and Cons
- "The standout feature is its connectivity and robust support. They are easily easy to get hold of, making it convenient for us."
- "The challenge arose due to a space issue. The issue was related to disk breaks, especially when power cuts occurred. One of the disks would break, leading to a loss of functionality."
What is our primary use case?
We use it to enforce policies that require us to secure and possibly recover certain data. Essentially, we manage client information, detailing everything relevant to customers, and any data users may save that is crucial to the business.
We manage and back it up. There are instances where we request tests or resource assessments and then proceed with sign-ins.
What is most valuable?
The standout feature is its connectivity and robust support. They are easily easy to get hold of, making it convenient for us.
What needs improvement?
The challenge arose due to a space issue on my end. However, with the new product we are acquiring, it seems to address that concern.
The issue was related to disk breaks, especially when power cuts occurred. One of the disks would break, leading to a loss of functionality. It's when one of the disks becomes affected, losing its node functionality.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution was mostly stable. We had issues with powers sometimes.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

How are customer service and support?
There might be occasional language variations, but overall, they're quite responsive. Our engineers spoke in a different English language, so language was a bit a barrier for us.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was relatively easy for me since I took the time to learn about the tasks involved. Even when issues arose, I often resolved them without needing support, thanks to the new tools provided.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
We are currently using it, and for the features we get, the pricing is justified. We bought it at a test time, and it's positioned at a midrange price now.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend it to you, considering how easy it is to use. We have experienced stability and enhanced functionality, and there's a seamless opening for cloud integration. Ensuring that your storage can be optimized in a more efficient manner.
I would give it a ten out of ten. Considering that it has evolved from the earlier Symantec Backup product.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

How are customer service and support?
I'm facing challenges with Veritas support in Cyprus because the company is not directly present here. Instead, they rely on distributors like us. Getting support isn't easy; for priority one cases, a response takes around five or six days. Unfortunately, the provided answers often don't offer solutions to our problems.
When dealing with technical issues, the process involves continuous discussions. Veritas instructs us to perform certain actions, we comply, and then a different person takes over the next day. The issue is that you never get to speak to the same person familiar with the problem. Engineers change daily, leading to a prolonged resolution time.
How would you rate customer service and support?

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I rate the tool's pricing an eight out of ten.

The product is useful for backups, but its management and setup must be improved
Pros and Cons
- "The solution is useful for backups."
- "The installation is cumbersome."
What is most valuable?
The solution is useful for backups. It can be used as a central backup solution.
What needs improvement?
The installation is cumbersome. There is a script that has to be updated every time. If it isn't updated, the solution does not perform the backups. The management and setup must be improved.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the solution for three to four years.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We can scale on the cloud as we wish. It will cost us additionally, though.
How are customer service and support?
We have local support. We are not connected directly to Veritas’s support team.
How was the initial setup?
We have deployed the product on-premises. The cloud solution is more flexible and provides more stability.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The cost depends on how we use the tool.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend the solution. If someone deals with organizations in different geographies, they might not want to use it. Overall, I rate the tool a six out of ten.

A strong solution that helps to do backup
Pros and Cons
- "We mainly use Windows for all our operating systems. Our databases are SQL databases. For backups, we set up one master server and three process servers. Our company isn't big, so this setup works well for us. We install the Veritas NetBackup Appliance agent on all the systems that need to be backed up."
- "Veeam has a verification action, which is good."
What is most valuable?
We mainly use Windows for all our operating systems. Our databases are SQL databases. For backups, we set up one master server and three process servers. Our company isn't big, so this setup works well for us. We install the Veritas NetBackup Appliance agent on all the systems that need to be backed up.
It's a robust solution, and it is very strong indeed. In 2020, we faced the challenge of losing the catalog. We recovered the catalog using tape, which was crucial for restoring our backups. This feature stands out to me as one of the most valuable aspects of the solution.
What needs improvement?
Veeam has a verification action, which is good.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with the product for five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I rate Veritas NetBackup Appliance's stability an eight out of ten.
How was the initial setup?
After installing the client and configuring network policies on the Veritas NetBackup Appliance server, I set up backup schedules and performed test backups. If the test was successful, I applied the backup schedule configuration, starting at 10 PM every night, with backups finishing by 6 AM. This setup allowed eight hours for backup. In my larger environment, we manage multiple media servers. We use a tape library and Data Domain for long-term backup retention. We noticed gaps in our security backup strategy recently, so we introduced a domain for production and disaster recovery. Each domain has one master server, one data domain, and one deployment.
The tool's deployment is easy since I have experience with it. It may prove difficult for others. It is not difficult, but integrating the applications, such as Windows, Oracle, SQL, and other applications, took more time. It required good planning to ensure everything integrated well.
What other advice do I have?
I rate the overall product an eight out of ten.

The companion software is customized for the solution, but there should be more OS options
Pros and Cons
- "The NetBackup appliance features customized software that is designed for storage."
- "The NetBackup software is based on Red Hat Linux, but we should have multiple software options for that. We should have more OS options. Also, there are too many tools and intermediaries. Everything should be built into an all-in-one solution."
What is most valuable?
The NetBackup appliance features customized software that is designed for storage.
What needs improvement?
The NetBackup software is based on Red Hat Linux, but we should have multiple software options for that. We should have more OS options. Also, there are too many tools and intermediaries. Everything should be built into an all-in-one solution.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using NetBackup for more than 10 years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
NetBackup is stable. If it is in a remote place, we can put lead backup plans in place for backing up and sending metadata to the main data center.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
NetBackup is a scalable solution, but it costs more to scale up.
How are customer service and support?
I work with multiple backup tools, and Veritas is in the middle. The support isn't great.
How was the initial setup?
Setting up NetBackup is straightforward, but we sometimes get some weird errors while we are trying to configure it. There are so many processes to deal with because all of these products are legacy backup tools. They are a little more complicated than next-generation backup tools like Rubrik or some of the newer ones on the market. It doesn't require many users for maintenance.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I rate NetBackup six out of 10 for pricing.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Veritas is becoming stable again, but two or three years ago, everyone was switching from Veritas to Commvault or emerging tools like Rubrik due to the bad support and high cost.
Today, everything is a converged backup solution with everything built in. However, Veritas started in the 1990s, so everything was added to that software. I think we need to have a very huge version change in Veritas to keep pace with modern requirements and simplify things.
What other advice do I have?
I rate Veritas NetBackup Appliance seven out of 10 overall.

Works well and integrates into the VMware environment but the interface needs improvement
Pros and Cons
- "The documentation is okay. You are able to follow it and it is helpful."
- "It's hard to get to the backups. There are too many tabs."
What is our primary use case?
It's a backup solution. I use it for backup and recovery.
What is most valuable?
I like the solution. It works well.
The integration to the VMware environment is good.
The documentation is okay. You are able to follow it and it is helpful.
One big feature which we really like is that it is a little bit immutable. There are a couple of storage locations.
What needs improvement?
I don't like the interface of Veritas. It could be improved. It's not that user-friendly right now.
It's hard to get to the backups. There are too many tabs.
It's like to see replication in Veritas.
The setup is a bit more complex than Veeam.
For how long have I used the solution?
It's quite new. We implemented the product this year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It's very new. everything is working. It's quite stable and reliable. We haven't had any issues.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have three people using the solution right now.
We are working with one model replaced as we're going to take a higher model. It is possible to scale. We're going to expand usage.
How are customer service and support?
We haven't been in touch with technical support.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We use both Veeam and Veritas. The platform is different from Veritas.
Working on Veeam, is very simple and very vertical, very English. With Veritas, you have to work on it to get into the backups. You have to go through so many tabs and menus to reach the backup. The way you handle it is more complicated than Veeam.
I don't see replication in Veritas. Right now, Replication is purely on the Veeam side. Veeam is doing both.
How was the initial setup?
I did find the Veeam setup easier.
It took us a day to deploy the product. It did not take long.
I'd rate the ease of setup at a three out of five due to some general complexity.
It's a new appliance. Right now, it is working fine. We don't really need to worry about maintenance.
What about the implementation team?
There were vendors involved in the deployment. We did not handle it on our own.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I'm not involved in procurement and pricing. I can't speak to the exact cost.
My understanding is that the solution is a bit on the higher side in terms of cost.
What other advice do I have?
We're working with the latest version of the solution. We are running a POC and will become a customer.
I'd rate the solution five out of ten. The functionality is complex. I prefer Veeam.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises
