We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It is well-established, reliable, and compatible.""The key things are managing interactions, resource allocation, resource-leveling (enterprise) and as a collaborative tool, because we use it across multiple projects at a time.""I like being able to manage the capacity in terms of the resources. I also like being able to share documents and information between teams. It's the best solution for collaboration.""I found the portfolio management valuable.""The most valuable features are the gantt charts. It's easy to use for me.""It's stable and reliable.""The most useful feature of Microsoft Project Server is you can select a function to see the baseline.""The solution scales well."

"Has a powerful workflow engine that allows creation of workflow complexities and processes.""Overall, they have a very strong workflow management capability. That's a very strong feature because then you can model any process easily. Whether it is a demand management process, a pipeline management process, or your project delivery methodology, it is much easier because of their workflow management capability.""Scenario comparison is the feature most valuable to us and the reason why we decided to choose HPE PPM over other portfolio management products.""The portfolio management and the resource management are the key features.""I like the ease of customization from an admin perspective. I'm really excited about some of the things that are coming in version 10.0.3 as far as what admins are able to do.""Micro Focus PPM is flexible and easy to use. It's simple to customize and configure workflows.""Resource management: The resource management module is very complete and covers most of the time all needs of customers.""It's a very detailed tool. As far as an enterprise is concerned, it gives you the flexibility to manage everything: portfolios, projects, finances, proposals, resources, and time... It takes care of even the minor details that need to be captured. The project management functionality is configured really well within the tool. That stands out."

Cons
"The price of the product must be improved.""Project Server could be improved by simplifying how tasks are assigned and reviewed on a daily basis.""The initial setup was complex.""When we started using this solution from scratch, we got lost. Microsoft should provide some templates for configurations for certain use cases.""It has to be more user-friendly. For instance, there should be some assistance, like when you go to certain sites, people pop up and say, "Can we help you? What are you looking for?" It's not interactive enough.""The solution should be made more collaborative.""The product's UI is not very user-friendly.""Microsoft Project Server's user interface is pretty average, and sometimes it can have bugs."

"Reporting; need to be able to provide fancy reporting out of PPM, way it is done in OBIEE etc.""There are some limitations when it comes to attaching receipts. For example, if we are going to buy some non-labor-related assets such as hardware, we are not able to attach the receipts in the Financial Management module in version 9.41.""Currently, HPE PPM does not allow “Project” approval, but only simple “Demand Request” approval (mobility).""I would also like to see improvement in PPM's reporting and alerts. PPM has reporting capabilities, including HTML reports and portlets. But a majority of clients will build their own reporting platforms, or they will use external reporting platforms like Tableau and QlikView.""I was not involved in the initial setup. I know that the project involved a lot of consulting that took a long time.""The user interface is very, very old and is missing some functions, such as, for example, re-do, follow, and share functions. The UI is not good.""They can make its UI better. Currently, the UI is a bit clunky.""We constantly put in requests for some of the things we need. One of those is being able to export just our standard request type to PDF."

"We use the desktop version of RationalPlan, and It seems some desktop software has the ability to share a document as a web view. This would be a nice feature allowing us to share our plans with clients without needing additional software. This may be something that is offered in the RationalPlan cloud plan."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "I think they need more flexibility with licensing, because there are preconceived ideas that don't allow as much flexibility with the various licenses."
  • "The licensing was procured before my involvement."
  • "It has features that cannot be bought by other rivals, so cost does not matter."
  • "It is on the expensive side."
  • "There is a licensing cost."
  • "There is an annual license required for this solution."
  • "I cannot comment on the price as I was not responsible for purchasing the solution."
  • "I'm not quite sure about the licensing costs. We're probably paying somewhere in the neighborhood of about 80,000 to 90,000 a year for our current on-prem because we handle our own licensing. As far as Project Online is concerned, we're still trying to get a good handle on that. It looks like it is going to be in a neighborhood of about 120,000 to 150,000 a year, but we're getting a lot more capability out of it."

  • "Support and license management are two hurdles for us. Every time we purchase new licenses, it has taken us half a year to implement those."
  • "It is SaaS without a base fee."
  • "HPE PPM SaaS model is comprehensive, however, the base fee component has customer resistance to its recurring setup,"
  • "Now, we also received an increase in the support license prices, without any advanced notice. At this point, switching to unify all our licensing under HPE and customer support has been poor."
  • "We have an annual license, and it is fairly priced in comparison to that of other solutions."
  • "A large organization will find Micro Focus PPM affordable, but it may be a bit costly for a small or medium-sized company. The license is based on the number of users."
