We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It is a good product. It provides network visibility, which is important. Gigamon can bring some optimizations to my network. It is helpful for security inspection, and it makes my firewall work fast because my firewall doesn't have to do the inspection of the SSL connections, for example.""The solution is straightforward to set up.""The tool's most valuable feature is the encryption feature. From a security perspective, the solution hasn't significantly strengthened our security posture. However, it has greatly improved performance by streamlining encryption processes and avoiding encryption at multiple layers. This has also simplified troubleshooting, as we can whitelist certain processes.""The most valuable feature for improving network visibility with Gigamon is the packet filtering capability.""The most valuable feature is NetFlow.""It offers straightforward integration.""It has high stability."

"Ease of set-up – it is quick and easy to add a probe and start collecting data from a device.""The reporting module is easy to configure.""The initial setup is very simple.""PRTG Network Monitor is a very stable product.""It has made our infrastructure more reliable.""I can create my own program sensor. This means I can add extra monitoring capabilities into the already fundamentally strong foundation.""PRTG Network Monitor helps us quickly and easily discover a large number of sensors, so we can spend minimal time monitoring customer sites.""The alerting is the most valuable feature. I also like the iPhone app. I get alerts in an email on the iPhone app."

Cons
"The Gigamon Deep Observability Pipeline should have a feature showing the traffic flow within its platform. Currently, customers have to use separate tools for monitoring, which is inconvenient. If it had its visibility feature, it would make monitoring easier and more complete without needing extra tools.""They should increase the solution's cluster capacity.""The security should be improved.""The graphical user interface could be improved.""In terms of improvement, while the initial setup is not overly complicated, we did encounter a few issues.""It only inspects a specific kind of traffic. There should be different kinds of use cases.""Its filtering feature needs improvement."

"There is room for improvement in this solution for the performance and third-party monitoring protocols. They need to be updated to the latest ones.""PRTG's documentation could be improved.""PRTG Network Monitor can improve the reports. In the reports, you have to give an alert for that SMS and email, the emergency calls and downtimes have to be reported accordingly. You have to enable email services or an SMS gateway service to receive more alerts at the proper time.""While the desktop app is good, they could slightly improve it. We would like it to be a single pane of glass. At the moment, you can only see certain portions of information. You have to scroll through to make it more granular. We want them to develop the desktop app to be more user-friendly.""I would like the ability to monitor Cisco IRS devices.""The solution could be better and faster when it comes to performance.""I would like to have a VM version that can be installed on a cloud such as Azure. We're using Azure, and we're eliminating on-premise servers. It would be helpful to have a PRTG version that can be installed on the Azure cloud.""The thing that we do struggle with a bit is in the historic data. If I want look over 30 days, because it averages out onto one graph, you can't zoom in and drill down information."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
