Amazon RDS Valuable Features

Samuel Ebite - PeerSpot reviewer
AICE Graduate at alx_africa

Amazon RDS provides data encryption using services like KMS, crucial for securing high-sensitive data and meeting compliance requirements such as HIPAA or PCI DSS.

The best practices we've employed with RDS help design a well-architected framework, encompassing security, encryption, scalability with multi-availability zone deployment, and operational excellence with automated backups. RDS features, such as reserved instances, storage auto-scaling, monitoring with technologies like CloudWatch, and proxies, contribute to cost optimization.

The solution enhances security with IAM authentication and offers high availability to end users.

Regarding Amazon RDS in AWS, it is easy to use. It is somewhat pricey, but manageable. It has easy tasks, and we can easily integrate it with frontend components. For example, with IDE services, you can use tools such as pgAdmin. The installation steps are straightforward, and availability is high for these reasons.

Amazon RDS is the database service we have been using for approximately four to five years. It is a standard Postgres relational database that we use for storage purposes.

The features of Amazon RDS that I have found most valuable include web and mobile applications, enterprise applications, data warehousing and analytics, and software as a service platforms, along with dev testing environments, disaster recoveries, and backups.

The mobile app backend and development environment is also the best feature for database management for my customers.

Database management is effective in Amazon RDS because it offers automated backups, high availability, read replicas, and support from multiple database engineers, while also providing security, monitoring and metrics, scalability. We are using snapshots and database migrations as well as performance optimization.

The impact of Amazon RDS scalability and backup has been positive, with good vertical scaling, scale up and down, horizontal scaling, and storage scaling. The performance was good and availability helped with reducing downtime.

It's a fully managed database, so that makes our life easier from the operational standpoint. That is the key, basically.

Mostly from the operational standpoint, it is fairly easy to scale disaster recovery and all that. It becomes easier while we use Postgres and MySQL flavors of it. So whatever benefits we get from those databases are in addition to what AWS provides as a PaaS solution.

The most valuable features of Amazon RDS are its availability and security support, which are crucial for managing the system effectively. Additionally, the scalability is impressive as it allows configuration and expansion quickly. It simplifies the process of scaling, especially when transitioning from MySQL to Amazon RDS. Before, I maintained scaling myself, but with Amazon RDS, tasks like in-place scaling of CPUs and memory are efficiently handled.

Amazon RDS makes it easier for me to manage databases compared to traditional databases like MongoDB or local host servers. It offers an easy-to-use interface that allows me to monitor instances and update necessary features conveniently. This convenience is significant for both local and remote data management.

Authentication, authorization, and autoscaling features solve half our problems. The integrations are good. When a record comes, I can create a DB trigger. I can store it in S3 buckets. We cannot do it in a traditional database. We will have to run a separate script for it.

We can connect the solution with multiple databases. The vendor is adding all kinds of databases to it. The data protection is good enough. The product solved our DevOps and admin problems. We can add RDS integration with CloudWatch to provide metrics on the database instances. We can do some customizable metric evaluations. We can fire requests with EventBridge depending on events.

I don't manage my database with Amazon RDS. AWS manages Amazon RDS. Sometimes, it is enough, and I don't need to do low-level stuff, and I can use Amazon RDS. Suppose I really need to tweak and do low-level stuff, low-level in the sense of being very close to the system, and I need super-user privileges. In that case, Amazon RDS is out of the picture because AWS doesn't allow you to have super-user privileges in Amazon RDS. The use case for me with Amazon RDS is a cheap and dirty database that I can use when I don't need to do a lot of tweaking. When I need tweaking, I create my own instance of the Postgres, and I can become a super-user and do whatever I like.

Amazon RDS handles database backup mechanisms and patch management. Since the solution handles OS and database-level patches, we need not worry about security breaches. Amazon RDS has some metrics to show with respect to SQL performance or query running.

Relational databases excel in extensive normalization, eliminating data redundancy and efficiently structuring tables which leads to a clear and efficient relationship between tables using primary keys. Relational databases, such as MySQL, offer a streamlined approach to data retrieval, unlike non-relational databases that often require complex ID referencing. Additionally, relational databases have a more compact footprint, making them more manageable, especially in scenarios with significant daily data processing.

The product is pretty good for small or mid-scale organizations that don't have the luxury of proper DBAs or a large infra team. Scaling up and down is relatively easy without a proper setup. And apart from reducing these overheads, you have better performance insights if you use a server. And if you are serverless, your costs are lower. So we use both.

In one of our applications, customer interactions, such as subscriptions, transactions, and data from filled forms, are stored in Amazon RDS. This enables us to maintain a backup and aids in disaster recovery. Storing this data in the product allows us to analyze and gain insights into the details that come through the application when customers log in.

During our proof of concept, I had the opportunity to utilize the service alongside the vendor we were testing. Its most valuable feature is the scalability of the storage. It is easy to learn.

Create Replicas. Being able to create a replica with just a few clicks is great. Setting replication before would require backup, restore, and synching replication.

Backups. The fact that you can take a snapshot of the database without impacting the server is great. In comparison, large backups could lock tables or take too long. Alternatively, you would have to use tools such as xtraDB backup. That requires lots of code and maintenance.

Change Size. Being able to change the size of an RDS MySQL instance is amazing. There's no need to provision new machines, setup replication, etc. It's all done for you.

The first thing I like about RDS is the on-prem implementation. The time to install or set up a database environment is very fast.

The resilience, multi-zone resilience, and availability are great. We don't need to extensively create any replication services or anything that we have to worry about as DBAs. Everything is given. It's just a matter of punching in the parameters and in the background, it all that is configured.

Most useful is its availability to support multiple databases, such as Aurora, MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, MariaDB, and PostgresSQL. Your application can use multiple databases as required. Combine that with the Automated CI/CD tools, this makes it easy to implement the microservices architecture, which is the need of the hour for web based applications. The capability provided by the RDS to automate a portion of the RDBMS tasks, such as backups and performance tunings for multiple database engines, helps to save on DBA time and cost.
