We used the solution to design our models and databases, and then we used it to automate it through Excel.

Easy to set up and good filtering but has bit of a learning curve
Pros and Cons
- "The initial setup is easy."
- "Something that would take an hour or two hours to do it manually can take five to 10 minutes for Alteryx."
- "If there is any way to make the learning curve less steep, that would be ideal."
- "For me, it was a bit challenging to figure out how to work with Alteryx."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
The fact that it can turn up all the functions that Excel takes hours to do in a faster way is a very valuable feature. Inputting from various sources is easy. The fact that it can filter or do other kinds of inputs is very useful for Alteryx. Also, the thing with Excel, as opposed to Alteryx, is that Excel can only take up to a number of rows, and after that, it freezes. In my previous work experience, I had to deal with 10,000 or even more rows. Excel was not feasible at all as opposed to Alteryx, which just automated tasks and gave us the results in a few minutes. The reliability was much better.
The initial setup is easy.
What needs improvement?
I have not yet been exposed to Alteryx as much to comment on negative experiences. I'm taking a class this semester that has to do with Alteryx. I'm pretty sure that once I'm learning the projects and utilizing Alteryx more, then I can give back more feedback.
The usability could use some improvements. There are icons that you choose in terms of inputting the tool or even for filtering and then running different functions, there are different ways of designing your input tools and output tools, and that could get confusing.
I would suggest that if there's any way of simplifying it so that instead of tools or instead of understanding how it works, we could focus more on its usability and the output of it. For me, it was a bit challenging to figure out how to work with Alteryx. If there is any way to make the learning curve less steep, that would be ideal.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've used the solution for a year and a half.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability is good, and, unlike Excel, it can handle large amounts of data and not freeze.
There have been actually hiccups and issues with Alteryx, however, to deal with that, what we did was we went back and saw what the issue was, and mainly the issue was due to Excel. Maybe the value, function time, or strength value was not supporting it. We had to edit many functions and strengths to rerun it through Alteryx. That's one thing that's good in Alteryx: if we run and it's not working, it gives us an output and tells us where we are going wrong so that we can go back and troubleshoot on the problematic areas.
How are customer service and support?
I haven't had a chance to deal with the tech support due to the fact that mostly whenever things went wrong with Alteryx, we were able to fix it by ourselves or with the engineering team. Engineering was able to troubleshoot it and fix it by looking at the output given by Alteryx in the email. It tells you where things are going wrong. For that reason, we did not have the opportunity to go and ask for advice from support.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have had experience in automating projects in Excel and Alteryx, among others.
I have more experience in Alteryx itself than in Designer. A lot of databases were modeled, and we went and changed or updated the models, attributes, and entities. Then, what we did is we created them in Excel and we just auto-run it whenever we needed to.
How was the initial setup?
It's not complex, and it's also not straightforward. It depends on which database and how many functions you are using or how much you are designing through Alteryx. If there are a lot of structures and if there are a lot of values that you're doing through Alteryx, then it would be hard. That said, from my experience, it's actually not that tough.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I don't deal with licensing. I can't speak to the exact cost of the solution.
What other advice do I have?
At first, you need to know the capabilities of Alteryx. It's a good idea to attend a lot of webinars or do a project. That would be really helpful to understand how powerful Alteryx is. Alteryx is used a lot in financial industries, according to what I have seen. It becomes really taxing to do everything in Excel or spreadsheets. Something that would take an hour or two hours to do it manually can take five to 10 minutes for Alteryx. Therefore, try a small project or understand the intricacies of Alteryx and that will get you started.
I'd rate it seven out of ten.

A tool that offers a codeless approach to develop solutions easily
Pros and Cons
- "Alteryx Designer is a tool that is pretty much easy to install."
- "The price of the product is an area with certain shortcomings where improvements are required."
What is our primary use case?
I use Alteryx Designer to create ETL and data transformation flows.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature of the solution is its drag-and-drop functionality, so it is a codeless process, which is something I love. I can create container flows, which are very easily maintained and updated when needed.
What needs improvement?
I have been thinking a lot lately about the standalone nature of Designer since it only provides a desktop version of Alteryx, because of which there is no collaboration or automation possible with Designer. I would like to see more collaboration and automation features in the product. Collaboration and automation features are available at ten times the price of the standard Alteryx Designer, making it a very expensive tool. The price of the product is an area with certain shortcomings where improvements are required.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Alteryx Designer for three years. I use the solution's latest version.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Stability-wise, I rate the solution an eight to nine out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a five out of ten since it is a product that only one user can use at a time.
In my company, there are only three uses of Alteryx Designer, but I deal with our company's clients, which goes up to around 50 users.
How are customer service and support?
The solution's technical support is responsive, but there are some delays at times. I rate the technical support a six or seven out of ten.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have experience with IBM SPSS Modeler and the management tools in SQL from Microsoft.
I have experience with IBM SPSS Modeler and the management tools in SQL from Microsoft. The codeless approach in developing solutions offered by Alteryx Designer is the reason why my company chose it over IBM SPSS Modeler and Microsoft.
How was the initial setup?
Alteryx Designer is a tool that is pretty much easy to install. With Alteryx Designer, the only complexities are related to the security policies of our company's customers. What makes the installation phase of Alteryx Designer is the security policies of our company's customers and the product's installation part alone.
Alteryx Designer's installation part can be completed in a few hours.
The solution is deployed on an on-premises model.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Alteryx Designer is an affordable solution to purchase, but it gets expensive if you try to scale up or collaborate with other solutions. There are no additional costs apart from the standard licensing fees of the solution since, to create a solution, you need to buy more than one license from Designer. It is easy to buy one license from Designer, but then you need to buy more, which makes it quite expensive.
I rate the price of Alteryx Designer as a five on a scale of one to ten, where one is extremely expensive, and ten is a highly cheap product.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Microsoft Azure is one of the competitors of Alteryx Designer. Microsoft Azure ML or Databricks were the options we evaluated in our company against Alteryx Designer.
What other advice do I have?
I take care of Alteryx Designer's maintenance part for my company's clients, along with four data engineers.
I recommend Alteryx Designer to those who plan to use it.
I rate the overall product a seven to eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Numerous possibilities for data utilization with good stability features
Pros and Cons
- "It helps them to create customized workflows, transform data, perform calculations, and consolidate multiple data sources into a target database."
- "Improving the key-based sign-on process and making it more user-friendly would be a benefit."
What is our primary use case?
The main use case is regarding the finance field, due to its ability to efficiently extract, transform, and load data from various sources into a target database. It enables quick migration of data, with added calculations and transformations, resulting in higher performance compared to other tools.
How has it helped my organization?
It is an advantageous feature for finance users as it allows them to work with confidential data without requiring extensive coding knowledge. It helps them to create customized workflows, transform data, perform calculations, and consolidate multiple data sources into a target database. It provides good visibility and control over information, enabling the setup of alerts and notifications based on specific thresholds. Additionally, users can send emails directly from the platform, enhancing communication and collaboration within their teams.
What is most valuable?
It provides flexibility and scalability in terms of deployment. Users can work individually on their desktops or choose to publish and manage their workflows on a centralized server for higher performance. It efficiently handles large volumes of data, providing reliable performance in both desktop and server environments. It provides numerous possibilities for data delivery and sharing, using it as a data source for other applications, generating Excel files, or storing files on SharePoint.
What needs improvement?
Alteryx Designer supports connectivity with Snowflake, including the use of public and private keys for authentication. While using a general user ID and password is straightforward, when it comes to encrypted key-based systems, users may face complexity in managing the delivery process. Improving the key-based sign-on process and making it more user-friendly would be a benefit.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have used it for the last five months.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is generally stable, with little to no issues during monthly Windows patching. When it happens, it is required to investigate and identify the cause and find a resolution. If that is not possible, collaboration with the vendor is sought to address the problem or potentially roll back the patching and reinstall it.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is a highly scalable solution and there is an option for a cloud deployment, however, we haven't explored that possibility yet.
How are customer service and support?
The limited availability of resources and slower response times contribute to the challenges in troubleshooting and resolving issues.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Unlike other tools like Informatica and Netezza, which are more technical and database-focused, Alteryx Designer is created specifically for business users. It enables data integration tasks and data delivery, including aggregations, calculations, reporting, and business logic, eliminating the need for extensive coding knowledge.
What about the implementation team?
The workflow is typically published directly from the desktop application to the server, avoiding the need to download and upload it between environments. This approach helps manage any potential issues in the process. A team usually consists of a server administrator, application support personnel, and an expert resource responsible for maintaining the workflow from the beginning.
What was our ROI?
We witnessed a return on investment, but it didn't meet initial expectations.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The licenses are expensive, making it difficult to consider acquiring additional licenses to the existing ones. The cost of a single license is around four thousand dollars, which is costly. I would rate it seven out of ten.
What other advice do I have?
Although is on the expensive side, some companies with specific budgets and requirements may find value in investing in it. I would recommend to carefully evaluate the business needs and the cost structure before deciding to implement the solution. I would rate it eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Beneficial data handling, simple scanning, and reliable
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature of Alteryx is its stand-alone version that we do not have to download dependencies for loads. Additionally, the scan is useful for beginners."
- "The price of the solution could improve by being lower."
What is our primary use case?
We utilize Alteryx for the purpose of transforming data to generate a report for data analysis that predicts the number of customers who will upgrade or downgrade within a specified time frame. After creating the workflow and building a dashboard on it, we set it up on a client-server to run live. When new product data is introduced, we fetch it directly from the database. This process is based on Microsoft SharePoint, and we have specific nodes for this purpose. With the appropriate access, the node will extract the data from Microsoft SharePoint and transform it into the desired format, which we then use to build KPIs and dashboards.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature of Alteryx is its stand-alone version that we do not have to download dependencies for loads. Additionally, the scan is useful for beginners.
Handling a set of data sets for building, cleaning, and preparing is a straightforward process.
What needs improvement?
The price of the solution could improve by being lower.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Alteryx for approximately two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Alteryx is a stable solution.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have used Knime previously.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
We use the free version of the solution. There are enterprise licenses available. It cost approximately $5,000 annually. It is an expensive solution and there are additional features that cost more money.
What other advice do I have?
In today's world, where every field deals with data, it is essential to have tools that enable us to manipulate, clean, transform, and build dashboards from data. Traditionally, Python and other programming languages were used for data preparation, but now with Alteryx Online, even individuals without coding experience can enter the field and provide valuable solutions to clients. This makes it a useful tool for anyone who needs to work with data.
I rate Alteryx a nine out of ten.

Scalable, unlimited handling capacity, and drag and drop capability
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature of Alteryx is its unlimited handling capabilities."
- "Mastering Alteryx, a comprehensive solution, takes time. However, once you have gained proficiency with its layout and how to drag, drop, and connect components, it becomes remarkably easy, yet still thorough."
What is our primary use case?
Alteryx is the ultimate replacement for a data shop. I use Alteryx in place of a data center.
We using Alteryx on-premise using gaming systems for performance.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature of Alteryx is its unlimited handling capabilities.
What needs improvement?
Mastering Alteryx, a comprehensive solution, takes time. However, once you have gained proficiency with its layout and how to drag, drop, and connect components, it becomes remarkably easy, yet still thorough.
The visualization could improve in Alteryx. It is ideal to use another solution, such as Qlik, to make up for the lack of visualization.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Alteryx for approximately five years.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable. To scale the solution you will have to add more hardware to the on-premise setup, such as CPUs and memory.
What was our ROI?
We have received a return on investment using Alteryx after the first job.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The cost of Alteryx is approximately $2,900 annually.
What other advice do I have?
When I first started using the solution I was working with the state and was given six years of pregnant women and children data and it took 35 minutes to process the data. I tested the same data recently and it took .3 seconds.
Data should be returned within 30 seconds to make to process useful and if the solution does not provide this, then it is not beneficial.
Cloud deployments are not as quick as the on-premise.
I would advise others that they need someone who understands their domain in terms of the field that they are in. They need to have someone to hold their hand for the first ninety days. Once they pass the ninety days they will be set for the future.
I rate Alteryx a ten out of ten.

Allows end users to see clean and structured data, but the formula used should be automated
Pros and Cons
- "Alteryx makes it easy for the end customer to see clean data in a structured form."
- "The formula we currently use in Alteryx can be automated."
What is our primary use case?
We use Alteryx to modify and modernize data based on different types of data requests. The data and the data source may be in different forms, resulting in unstructured data in the database. We use Alteryx to give good shape and size to such unstructured data.
What is most valuable?
Alteryx makes it easy for the end customer to see clean data in a structured form. Alteryx has many features, such as info data, data cleansing formula, the select tool, union, summarize, and text-to-form. We use Alteryx in the database for reporting, documentation, email, and data preparation.
What needs improvement?
To use Alteryx, you need to think like the people who write software codes. The formula we currently use in Alteryx can be automated. This would be helpful for people using Alteryx who are not from a coding background and can write the formula differently. Whoever is using Alteryx should feel some convenience using it. We found most of the useful features built into Alteryx, but they all are on a paid basis.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Alteryx for nine to ten years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I have not faced any challenges with stability.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Alteryx is really scalable. It adds value and fits our business. More than 300 users are working with Alteryx in our organization in India. I do not have the exact figures, but 2000 users globally use the solution in our organization.
How are customer service and support?
During COVID, they had on-call engineers for very good technical support. I would like to have that support again because they have now closed it, which is difficult for people who need it. They should continue that kind of support again. It would be good if they could provide technical support on screen.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We did not use a different solution but we are planning to use Google Cloud Platform.
How was the initial setup?
The implementation is not a big thing for Alteryx. It is simple and easy to use.
What was our ROI?
We have seen ROI with this solution. However, if we explore other tools in the market, we will probably get a better ROI.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The solution has a more costly license than other tools in the market.
What other advice do I have?
Alteryx is the best solution for people who want their data in a structured way. It is a bit complicated for a new user. The complexity of the tool is evident by the fact that only if you provide an exact input to this tool it will give you the output. However, if you know a little about Alteryx, it is a very good tool for you. We are using an on-cloud deployment for this solution.
Overall, I rate Alteryx a seven out of ten.

Fast, reliable, and low-code
Pros and Cons
- "The cloud deployment ensures it scales easily."
- "The solution is improving continuously. They have, for example, just added automatic insights. If they continue to improve on their overall service offering, that would be ideal."
What is our primary use case?
Right now we have huge amounts of data metrics. We have a marketing team. We have sales. We have a networking team. We have door-to-door. In terms of data preparation, this solution was the primary method to get the data from many sources. It is easy for us in terms of integrating with the cloud and we can do most of the preparation. We can enable Alteryx to handle our data preparation, and sometimes you can enable it to set a pipeline and it can be stored in CCP. We mostly use it for working with Tableau. We're currently running it for multiple use cases.
What is most valuable?
The best thing is that the product is low-code and mostly no-code. It can be used dynamically by both customers and the internal team also.
In terms of speed and reliability, it is comparatively good and actually leads the pack in terms of competition.
It is easy to set up.
The cloud deployment ensures it scales easily.
The solution is extremely stable.
What needs improvement?
The solution is improving continuously. They have, for example, just added automatic insights. If they continue to improve on their overall service offering, that would be ideal.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the solution for quite some time - almost four years. I used it when it was being a stand-alone application and now we are using Alteryx Cloud with integration to Trifacta.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution has been highly stable and reliable. The cloud is very stable. There are no bugs or glitches, and it doesn't crash or freeze.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have 200 to 250 people working with the product in my company.
We faced a few issues with scalability in the past when it was a desktop application. However, after we started to use the Alteryx Analytics Cloud, this application has been really stable in terms of scalability. Initially, we started the trial with 30 people. Now we have around 200 to 250 people who currently use Alteryx Cloud. It scales quite well for us now.
How are customer service and support?
We have a special SME which is assigned by Alteryx to our organization. If we have any problem, we reach out to them in terms of any support. Mostly, myself and my team have never needed to connect with tech support as it is highly stable. The only thing we've had problems with is having issues around how we can automate the workflow. When we have questions like that, we just check with them.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We've been testing RapidMiner for quite some time. We wanted to have another option in pipeline if there happen to be any stability issues and budget issues happening or if the cost of Alteryx becomes an issue. However, in terms of RapidMiner, we have not fully used it for multiple reasons.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is very simple and straightforward. I've used it for a long time and previously used it as a desktop application. While it was simple then, now that they've moved to the cloud, it's even easier.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The solution is now quite expensive. You need to have a budget for it. However, if you do, it is worth the cost.
What other advice do I have?
We're a customer and end-user.
We are using the cloud deployment and, therefore, always on the latest version as it updates itself.
I'd recommend the solution to others.
I would rate the solution nine out of ten. It's been highly useful for my organization in terms of data strategy. In terms of usability and scalability, Alteryx is the best.

Associate Managing Director at a financial services firm with 10,001+ employees
Great visibility with drag-and-drop functionality and an active community
Pros and Cons
- "I like that I can merge data from different sources into one place."
- "I'd like it to be easier to work with PDF."
What is our primary use case?
The biggest use case for the solution is that it allows you to it allows me to combine data from different sources and different formats to create a unified data set to answer business questions. I can take data from my general ledger and combine it with my expense report data or with external data or with different parties or different questions, and it could all be in a different format. For example, one source can be from a database, one can be an Excel file, one can be a PDF, or a CSV file. Alteryx lets me very easily put them all together and create one database.
What is most valuable?
The biggest thing I like is that you need zero coding experience. I'm not a coder. I'm an accountant by trade, and I've been able to pick up the tool fairly quicker, basically.
The tool is very drag-and-drop. The tool has very good documentation to help you understand the features.
The community is very active and helpful.
I like that I can merge data from different sources into one place.
With this solution, we can do reporting in about five minutes as opposed to day.
Once we've vetted the data, we can get the solution to run during off-peak hours so we can out data very easily.
There's a lot less maintenance required.
We like that we can make notes right on their Canvas, so it's easy to pass workflows over to other users.
The visibility is very clear. We can show what data is being used and how it is being transformed.
My true data is able to stay intact even though I can easily manipulate it.
What needs improvement?
I'd like it to be easier to work with PDF. When you want it to read PDFs, it can be a bit difficult. That may be a PDF issue, however.
Maybe if I was doing more spatial or geographical tasks, I might need a bit more; however, for my purposes, I have all the features we need.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the solution since 2017 or 2018. I've used it for five to six years on a daily basis.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I find that the Designer is stable since it's on my machine. Sometimes the server environment is not the most stable. I'm not sure if that's due to the fact that we don't have enough cores or whatever that might be; however, that's something that's probably a little less stable, the server at the bottom. Again, the servers will be used to run flows, not to create the flows.
The Designer is where you create the process and your logic, and you can use a Server to run the processes at different times throughout the day.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability is fine. That said, the pricing model is not the cheapest. You have to be careful who will be using it. The pricing is the only hindrance to scaling.
We have around 300 to 500 licenses. It's pretty mature in our organization.
How are customer service and support?
We have a great relationship with technical support. They are helpful and responsive, and they have a great community.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I'm not sure if the company used something previously.
How was the initial setup?
In order to deploy it, you need to have Alteryx Designer. You have to have that installed on your machine. We have a yearly license and you just basically renew your license with Alteryx to keep it active.
In order to maintain our flows, there is very little maintenance needed.
What was our ROI?
We have witnessed excellent ROI. The fact that we can schedule flows and reduce time and entry to market has been extremely positive for the company.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing is reasonable; however, if you need a lot of licenses, it will get expensive.
What other advice do I have?
I am not using the latest version of the solution. We're always one or two versions behind the latest, as we only do updates once or twice a year.
The great thing about the solution is that if you know Excel well, it translates very well into Alteryx. It's important to have an open mind; however, I'd recommend everyone give it a try.
I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Filters data incredibly fast, suits large companies, and recommended for reading millions of records
Pros and Cons
- "The filtering is fast, and it provides a search tool that is great."
- "I'd like to see more artificial intelligence business tools or features in Alteryx."
What is our primary use case?
We mainly use Alteryx for large files.
How has it helped my organization?
It's incredibly fast for loading and filtering the data. We use it to read clients' information and general entries. We have files of about 20 gigs with perhaps millions of records, and we use macros in order to filter the information.
What is most valuable?
The filtering is fast, and it provides a search tool that is great. Macros are useful and fast for reading a lot of files and then creating just one file.
What needs improvement?
Its price is not great for small companies.
The export of the final TXT is hard. It's slower. We have a local deployment, and it could be because of the hard drive. SSD would perhaps improve the speed.
I'd like to see more artificial intelligence business tools or features in Alteryx.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've used Alteryx for about three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I'd rate it an eight out of ten in terms of stability. Sometimes, the app crashes when there are large files or when there is a huge amount of filtering data.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I'd rate it an eight out of ten in terms of scalability.
How are customer service and support?
I haven't used their support, but the documentation is good enough.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I used IDEA, but it was too slow. It was on x86 support, whereas Alteryx supports x64. So, we moved to Alteryx.
What was our ROI?
We have seen an ROI, but we don't have many licenses because of the price.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
It's very expensive. I'd rate it a four out of ten in terms of the price. It's great for big companies but not for small companies.
What other advice do I have?
If you are trying to read more than 100 million records, I'd recommend Alteryx, but if not, you can use another tool that is cheaper.
I'd rate it a nine out of ten.
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.
