Reliable solution with zero crashes
Pros and Cons
- "Oracle has helped our organization by being a reliable solution that is stable with zero crashes. The differentiation between Oracle's database and other databases is that Oracle needs more attention. It's not a click here, click there solution, it needs more time put in, but once you do that, it's ready to go and you can forget about it."
- "The area in this solution that could be improved is that currently, it's difficult to do the setup. You need to do all kinds of command lines to get it set up. If that setup becomes easier and easily manageable, that would be great."
What is our primary use case?
The primary use case for this solution for the clients I have been working with is building applications and storing their data in the database. My other use case is helping companies set up data guards for high availability.
How has it helped my organization?
Oracle has helped our organization by being a reliable solution that is stable with zero crashes. The differentiation between Oracle's database and other databases is that Oracle needs more attention. It's not a click here, click there solution, it needs more time put in, but once you do that, it's ready to go and you can forget about it.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is the solution's ability to seamless transform a primary into a standby database. When setting up failover where you have an active and a standby database and production goes down, you don't know if there are any issues. So, a seamless switch over to the standby is valuable because you can work on the production that has gone down to fix the problem.
What needs improvement?
The area in this solution that could be improved is that currently, it's difficult to do the setup. You need to do all kinds of command lines to get it set up. If that setup becomes easier and easily manageable, that would be great.
In the next release, I'd like to see a simpler connection between Oracle and other databases like SQL, MySQL, or a DB tool. I'd also like to see a simpler way to pull data from those external databases. This would add value to Oracle in my opinion.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Oracle Database as a Service since 2007. That adds up to around 16 years. I started using Oracle when it was Oracle version 10.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The cost of licensing for this solution is quite high.
What other advice do I have?
When it comes to other people looking into this solution, I would advise double-checking the pricing as it's quite high for Oracle. Other than that, go for it.
Overall, I would rate this solution a 10, on a scale from one to 10, with one being the worst and 10 being the best.
