Has good partitioning features and vertical scalability
Pros and Cons
  • "In terms of structured databases, I support SQL-based databases. SQL has its place, but not for plannable structure and transactional databases. At the same time, Oracle is very much optimized."
  • "I would like to improve the stability of the Oracle database."

What is our primary use case?

Oracle Database could be useful for companies that need the stability of the Oracle database. People might not have the money, time, and options to maintain commodities-supported systems on their own or have a dedicated DBA team. So, the best is if you buy the service and not simply install a database and hope that it will work but not have enough people to support it. In my opinion, any mid-size business needs the stability and scalability of an Oracle Database.

How has it helped my organization?

Where I work, all the core systems are Oracle-based. In the banks, there were about 400-800 people as users and many customers.

What is most valuable?

In terms of structured databases, I support SQL-based databases. SQL has its place, but not for plannable structure and transactional databases. At the same time, Oracle is very much optimized. If you don’t have a deeper knowledge of how to create a query, the newer versions optimize it without answers as well. So that is a very strong feature.

Another valuable feature is partitioning. You can partition the database, you can move the partitions, and maintain the growth. The unnecessary growth of the database and the backup systems are well supported. So, all the things around which we need the long-lived stability of the database are in Oracle.

What needs improvement?

I would like to improve the stability of the Oracle database.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle for ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would like to improve the stability of Oracle. Although, I would like to give an example here. Finding new core banking systems can be daunting, particularly when vendors don't clearly state their capabilities upfront. To ensure optimal performance and stability, a list of vendors is available with specific requirements listed in the database directory. Although not always explicitly stated upfront, many offer compatibility with Oracle databases when appropriate.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is very scalable, but the Oracle stability is okay. The vertical scalability works well. There is a lot of hype around horizontal stability. But to be honest, if you are using a transactional database system for a bank, it does not require a big database. The gross of the database is predictable. The first thing we look at is its performance. If we need to get the right performance, we need to scale. But the most important aspect for us is performance. I need both the scalability part and performance.

How are customer service and support?

I have never directly reached out to the Oracle support team.

How was the initial setup?

In banks, there are enough people to set things up, so the setup gets easier and easier.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

In my opinion, it's not cheap, but every business can decide for itself.

The question is, how successful will Microsoft be in getting into your business? Because, of course, there is competition on the cloud part.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Microsoft is trying to get into this business. It's cheaper. One reason is that the banking systems often use PSQL. There is business logic in the database. The reason Microsoft was proposed was for its performance. It costs a lot to transform PSQL into Microsoft SQL. They are two different languages, and even the solutions are different. Another reason to go with Oracle is that it's more mature than its competitors. I would consider it the golden gate.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Oracle a nine out of ten. I have used different versions in different companies. For example, at the moment, in this company, we have an Oracle record 11g. In my former company, we used 12c and 19c. It's not good to lag too much time because then you will fight with the problems to update the newer versions. We are planning to upgrade it from 11g to 2019.

Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.

My company can plan to increase the number of users since it is a scalable product. You just need to increase from a single or one node cluster to support more users.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have experience with SQL Server. My company switched from SQL Server to Oracle Database as a Service since we found the latter to be one of the best products in the market.

How was the initial setup?

Oracle Database as a Service's initial setup phase has become easier compared to its complex nature ten years ago. Oracle Database as a Service has become easy to operate even when it comes to the advanced installation part.

Considering that all the prerequisite requirements are met, Oracle Database as a Service's deployment phase can be completed in a day.

For the deployment phase, you need to get involved in some hardware provisioning, after which you need to see to it that all the prerequisites for the deployment process are met before choosing to install Oracle Database as a Service, and you can create your database.

My company did not see any help from any consultants for the deployment phase of Oracle Database as a Service.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Oracle Database as a Service is an expensive product.

What other advice do I have?

Oracle Database as a Service is a well-integrated tool with other products.

If you want an operational database and support for a mission critical system, then Oracle Database as a Service is your best product. I won't recommend small or mid-sized companies to go with Oracle Database as a Service. For a smaller database, I suggest SQL Server.

I rate the overall tool a ten out of ten.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, we utilized Oracle on-premises solutions for our database needs. We switched to SQL Server for specific business requirements. However, more recently, we transitioned to Oracle Database as a Service (DBaaS), a shift influenced by a reassessment of our evolving business needs.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup takes a few hours to complete. It requires two executives to work on deployment and one executive to maintain the product. I rate the process an eight out of ten.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented the service with the help of our in-house team.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is an expensive product. I rate the pricing an eight out of ten.

What other advice do I have?

We use the product for data warehousing or business analytics for software applications, including Enterprise Transactional Systems (ETT).

It has significantly enhanced our application development process by introducing substantial time savings and streamlining routine tasks. When considering an upgrade, the process is simplified, eliminating the need for meticulous checks of backups. Instead, developers can efficiently review the latest updates, choose a suitable upgrade window for their business, and with a few clicks during a designated maintenance window, initiate the process.

For data security, the most beneficial features are validation and verification processes conducted by the service provider before the release of any patches on the official page. The stringent process instills confidence in the reliability of the service, especially in preventing potential security breaches or risks. Oracle service's technical team keeps the clients informed regarding any identified threats and actions to protect the data. It reduces the manual workload for database administrators, allowing them to focus on efficiently implementing patches during designated management windows.

The scalability has made the operations easier than traditional methods. When expanding our product or adjusting resources, we no longer need to perform intricate operations at the operating system or hardware level. Instead, it automatically spins or reallocates storage within the service. The process takes about an hour and a half, ensuring optimized storage to meet the growing needs of our expanding datasets.

The feature of automatic incremental backup has been beneficial to business continuity planning. It ensures that all backup activities are seamlessly managed without requiring any major involvement from the database administrators. It eliminates the need for manual scripting or the setup of intricate backup scenarios. As a result, the maintenance time gets reduced as well. The integration with other systems has medium complexity.

I rate the product an eight out of ten.
