We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Fortinet FortiGate is stable. It's used across all the countries, this is the way most multinationals run their system.""UTM/NGFW features and FortiCloud for logs and backups are awesome.""The main benefit is the grouping of our security monitoring.""It is easy to use. We chose this product for the possibility to have virtual domains (VDOMs). We are building another company in the group, and we would like to split the firewalling rules and policies between these two companies. Each company would be able to manage its own policies and security rules, which is an advantage of Fortinet FortiGate. We can define VDOMs, and every company can manage its own VDOM as if it has its own physical firewall, but in fact, we would be using the same physical appliance because we are also using the same internet lines. So, it allows us to reuse the existing resources without the disadvantage of having to compromise on policies and security. Each company can choose its own way of working.""The main reason why I purchased the particular unit was that it had good reviews and what other people were saying as far as its completeness and its leading capabilities in terms of endpoint security was very good.""It's an easy solution to set up.""The signature database and zero-day detection are Fortinet FortiGate's most valuable features.""The simplicity of the configuration and the stability of the product are most valuable. The VPN concentrator is very useful."

"It works well with a highly-active cluster.""We did not have issues with scalabiliy."

More McAfee StoneGate [EOL] Pros →

"Its user interface and simplicity are the most favorite parts for our clients. They find it stable and easy to use. Its performance is also good.""SonicWall TZ think it's a good, solid, and stable product.""Once it's configured properly, the solution is unbreakable.""I find the security we are able to do with the policies to be valuable. The monitoring is valuable as well.""They give good protection to my network and support it.""SonicWall TZ is very user-friendly and has network MAC binding. Additionally, the firewall works well.""It does exactly what it says on the tin. It is good for protecting the business from being compromised. Its port protection is very good.""The network security is great."

Cons
"Fortinet FortiGate could improve by having better visibility. Palo Alto has better visibility.""Some of the software stability could improve.""There are mainly two areas of improvement in Fortinet FortiGate— the licensing cost and the timing of upgrading licenses for boxes.""The solution lacks sufficient filtering.""It could use more templates for third-party site-to-site VPN setups other than FortiGate and Cisco.""They need faster serviceability and more security features.""MTBF: Hardware failure is more common when compared to SonicWall or Cisco ASA.""We were not able to build a full-mesh VPN; however, I am not sure if this was the fault of Fortinet FortiGate."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"After some experience with the solution, we had to do some redesign, but generally, we were happy with the product."

More McAfee StoneGate [EOL] Cons →

"The solution's pricing could be made cheaper.""I think content filtering is the area this product should improve. It's a little tricky to get put in correctly.""The solution has lost the trust of its customers because of moving from one company to another.""The market seems to be going to a cloud-supported, new generation of firewall products. I think that's probably going to be important to us, the next time around.""Support for SonicWall TZ needs improvement, particularly the time it takes before you're able to speak to a support person, e.g. you have to wait for at least 30 minutes on the phone.""The quality of tech support can vary.""In general, the company needs to think contingently and integrate more security options.""Its reporting can be improved. Currently, we cannot directly get the user names. It only shows the IP, which makes it a bit confusing because we need to use the IP to find the user. If we could directly get the name of the user, it would be better."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."

    Information Not Available
  • "Getting licenses in our country, Ghana, is not easy. Though, once we have them, adding them is quick (about a day)."
  • "SonicWall has authorized distributors in our country. They have about two or three distributors in the country, so it makes it a bit easier. What we do is to request a quotation from these distributors, then we do a value for money analysis and see which one of them is giving us a competitive price."
  • "The pricing was a factor for us, and we felt that the price was good."
  • "The product pricing is relatively good, compared to other products, including the licenses."
  • "Licensing costs have been around $2,000. There are no other costs above the standard licensing fees."

  • "The price is high compared to some other solutions."
  • "Its pricing is okay as compared to other solutions."
