We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature of AWS Database Migration Service is it catches all the history changes, such as inset, observe, and delete. It tracks everything.""This solution is very good at mini-batch processing.""It's pretty useful when we need to migrate something big from a different type of database that AWS Data Migration Services supports.""Even if it does break down, it will automatically recover itself and resumes from where it stopped.""The solution is instantaneous. We can launch the service and reduce the end number of manpower.""As the solution is on the cloud, we don't have to worry about the maintenance of software.""The installation is easy.""We particularly like that this solution has the facility to integrate with all ETL tools."

"Informatica Cloud Data Integration is stable.""Informatica is good for integrating data and cloud applications. We have connectors for integrating cloud applications like Salesforce. You can quickly integrate anything with an exposed API or a REST API. The industry is increasingly shifting to the cloud, so we need more products that can connect to cloud-based applications. The integration is seamless and works in real time. It's also secure because you don't need to expose databases or tables.""I do a quite a lot of data transformations, and the fact that I can do them without changing any of my SQL queries from the code, using the inbuilt tools, is very helpful.""The data mapping capability is a valuable feature.""Informatica Cloud Data Integration is stable.""I like the fact that you can find almost any product connection that you need and the list is always expanding.""It has become an easy way to exchange information through any cloud application.""It is a scalable solution. Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a nine out of ten."

"I like SharePlex's Compare and Repair tool.""The core features of the solution we like are the reliability of the data transfer and the accuracy of data read and write. The stability of the solution is also excellent.""There are some capabilities within SharePlex where you can see how the data is migrating and if it still maintains good data integrity. For example, if there are some tables that get out of sync, there are ways to find them and fix the problem on the spot. Since these are very common issues, we can easily fix these types of problems using utilities, like compare and repair. So, if you find something is out of sync, then you can just repair that table. It basically syncs that table from source to target to see if there are any differences. It will then replicate those differences to the target.""Because of the volume of the transactions, we heavily use a feature that allows SharePlex to replicate thousands of transactions. It's called PEP, Post Enhancement Performance, and that has helped us scale tremendously.""The core replication and its performance. Performance is crucial, and SharePlex is by far the fastest. The way it handles replication to multiple targets along with basic filtering, as well as from multiple sources to a single target, is very efficient."

Cons
"It would be helpful if the bandwidth could be independent of the network or if we could have a dedicated bandwidth for this product.""The names of the services need improvement since AWS doesn't indicate what the function of the product is presently. You need to read a lot to find the service that you want in the product.""AWS Database Migration Service can become complex when testing. Other solutions, such as Microsoft Azure makes it easy to do. There are more steps to complete tasks in AWS Database Migration Service than in Microsoft Azure.""The solution’s scalability and performance could be improved.""Migrating from here and pushing the data from on-premise to AWS cloud is a big challenge and a few more services from AWS would be helpful. For example, we are currently using ILDB internet tools which move data from on-premise to the AWS cloud. A few more services would be really helpful for me to move the master data.""The performance of data migration could be smoother.""The server has limits on how many can connect to the database.""The product's performance could be a little bit better."

More AWS Database Migration Service Cons →

"One area that needs to improve is the user experience because it is very complex. The trial version is very complex so it's not easy to start using the program immediately. You must study the rules first.""With the solution, we had some issues, and we have every day, and we used to open a ticket. Sometimes, there are data issues and transformation issues.""There is room for improvement at the highest level in terms of useability and connectors for various types of new applications. The row processing performance could be better because you experience some latency dealing with high volumes of data. Most organizations will be dealing with multiple cloud applications, so you could see performance issues moving from one system to another.""The integration process is not easy.""Certain shortcomings in the product's UI make it an area where improvements are required.""The main issue preventing Brazilian companies from migrating to Informatica Cloud Data Integration from on-prem is the price.""The biggest challenge I see is the IDE's for the cloud and automization are different.""The vendor should have more training resources: online classes, free tutorial videos, etc."

More Informatica Cloud Data Integration Cons →

"I don't know how easy it would be to change the architecture in an already implemented replication. For example, if we have a certain way of architecting for a particular database migration and want to change that during a period of time, is that an easy or difficult change? There was a need for us to change the architecture in-between the migration, but we didn't do it. We thought, "This is possibly complicated. Let's not change it in the middle because we were approaching our cutover date." That was one thing that we should have checked with support about for training.""The reporting features need improvement. It would be very good for users to have a clear understanding of the status of replication.""I would like the solution to have some kind of machine learning and AI capabilities. Often, if we want to improve the performance of posting, we have to bump up a parameter. That means we need to stop the process, come up with a figure that we want to bump the parameter up to, and then start SharePlex. Machine learning and AI capabilities for these kinds of improvement would tremendously help boost productivity for us.""I would like more ability to automate installation and configuration in line with some of the DevOps processes that are more mature in the market. That would be a considerable improvement.""For its function in relation to replication (i.e. filtering), I'd give it a six or seven out of 10. GoldenGate has much more functionality by comparison."

    Overview

AWS Database Migration Service, also known as AWS DMS, is a cloud service that facilitates the migration of relational databases, NoSQL databases, data warehouses, and other types of data stores. The product can be used to migrate users' data into the AWS Cloud or between combinations of on-premises and cloud setups. The solution allows migration between a wide variety of sources and target endpoints; the only requirement is that one of the endpoints has to be an AWS service. AWS DMS cannot be used to migrate from an on-premises database to another on-premises database.

AWS Database Migration Service allows users to perform one-time migrations, as well as replications of ongoing changes to keep sources and targets in sync. Organizations can utilize the AWS Schema Conversion Tool to translate their database schema to a new platform and then use AWS DMS to migrate the data. The product offers cost efficiency as a part of the AWS Cloud, as well as speed to market, flexibility, and security.

The main use cases of AWS Database Migration Service include:

    • Migrating from legacy or on-premises databases to managed cloud services through a simplified migration process.

    • Reliable replication of backup files to minimize downtime and data loss.

    • Improvement of integration through building of data lakes and performing real-time processing on change data from users' data stores.

    AWS Database Migration Service Components

AWS Database Migration Service consists of various components which function together to achieve users’ data migration. A migration on AWS DMS is structured in three levels: a replication instance, source and target endpoints, and a replication task. The components include the following actions:

    • Replication instance: AWS Database Migration Service provides users with a variety of replication instances, allowing them to select the optimal configuration for their use case. Depending on the instance class an organization selects, their replication instance provides a different amount of data storage.

    • Endpoint: AWS DMS uses an endpoint to access users' source or target data stores. The connection information is different and depends on the specific data store, but it usually consists of the following information: endpoint type, engine type, server name, port, encryption, and credentials. This information can easily be managed through the AWS DMS console.

    • Replication tasks: AWS Database Migration Service replication tasks can be used to move a set of data from the source endpoint to the target endpoint. The creation of a replication task is the last required step before starting a migration. Each replication task requires the following settings to be set: replication instance, source endpoint, target endpoint, and migration type options.

    • Ongoing replication or change data capture (CDC): AWS DMS also has the capacity to capture ongoing changes to the source that is stored while users migrate their data to a target.

    • Schema and code migration: The product requires assistance from tools such as MySQL Workbench, pgAdmin III, and Oracle SQL Developer to perform schema or code conversion, as it cannot do it on its own.

    AWS Database Migration Service Benefits

AWS Database Migration Service offers its users a wide range of benefits. Among them are the following:

    • The solution ensures minimal downtime, as it continuously replicates the changes to the user’s source database during migration.

    • AWS DMS provides users with flexibility, as it supports many commonly used databases, including commercial and open-source ones.

    • The product is user friendly, as it offers an easy set of tasks in the AWS Management Console.

    • Users of Aurora, Redshift, DocumentDB, and DynamoDB can benefit from the free use of AWS DMS.

    • AWS Database Migration Service is very reliable because it is a self-healing service that automatically restarts in cases of interruptions.
