The solution has excellent reporting but needs to invest in AI and ML features to counter ransomware
Pros and Cons
  • "Veeam One is easy to use. You don't need to get very technical or specific class training. Anyone can start using it."
  • "Veeam One has its ransomware monitoring, but it's based on static parameters."

What is our primary use case?

My clients use Veeam One for monitoring. Veeam One offers backups and VM monitoring.

What is most valuable?

Veeam One is easy to use. You don't need to get very technical or specific class training. Anyone can start using it.

In my customer's feedback, one thing they liked a lot was the reporting. There is a reporting tool from Veeam One. My customers use reports and can generate reports based on anything they want. They can then compile the report and use them for multiple purposes. My customers use the reports for auditing and reporting, such as quarterly reports.

What needs improvement?

Veeam One has its ransomware monitoring, but it's based on static parameters. Maybe they can put in AI or ML to get an understanding of our customer's environment, so we don't need to manually tweak the static parameters to meet the customer's environment.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have about two years of experience with Veeam One, but my company deployed it three or four years ago.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate Veeam One's stability an eight out of ten. I don't hear any issues from my customers.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I rate Veeam One's scalability a seven out of ten. The solution has some limitations with scaling, so we need to put in some workarounds to scale it. However, the solution is still scalable.

In Malaysia, we have SMB and even enterprise customers. We have two banking customers using Veeam One.

How are customer service and support?

Veeam One has different support centers around the region because of the time zone. In Malaysia, the morning support will be in Australia. After three o'clock in Malaysia, Australia's shift ends, and if we need to continue to work on a case, we need to get the support team to transfer the case to another team, and it takes time to do the handover. That process could be faster.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before Veeam One, I tried Veritas. In Veritas, if we want to monitor the virtual infrastructure, that is a separate license. Veeam One is very straightforward because it's called the virtual machine. If you have 100 virtual machines, you have to get 100 licenses. Veritas needs a capped speed license, which means I need to understand the customer's environment around the capped speed they use for the virtual machines. The license structure is complex for Veritas. And it is difficult to forecast the capped speed for the next few years of growth.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is really simple.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Veeam One's cost is cheaper. I rate its pricing a seven or an eight out of ten. The price is pretty cheap for our market. It's a really good price for the quality of the product.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Most clients don't want to use vRealize Operations since it is expensive.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Veeam One a seven out of ten. There are some improvements, but for the price point and features, I think that Veeam One is a great product.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Easy to set up with good scalability and helpful technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is stable."
  • "When you have to renew the licenses you sometimes have some trouble getting rid of the old one and reassigning it to the new one. That's an aspect that could run smoother and could be better."

What is most valuable?

We like it due to the fact that we can get error messages to alert us to issues. We can get a forecast for our storage and so on. It's really good.

The initial setup is easy.

The solution is stable.

The product is very scalable.

Technical support is helpful and knowledgeable. They respond very fast.

What needs improvement?

You have several monitors you have to tune. You have several snapshots on the volume and so on, and this is the standard. However, for example, if you have Rezon from VMware, you have much more snapshots on the volume, and yet it's not a problem as Rezon doesn't have these issues with the huge number of snapshots. They should offer more snapshots on Veeam.

The pricing could be reduced.

When you have to renew the licenses you sometimes have some trouble getting rid of the old one and reassigning it to the new one. That's an aspect that could run smoother and could be better.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've used the solution for the last eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution scales very well.

You just put in another license key and you can add some hosts. It's that easy.

We have five people that directly use the solution within our company.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support from Veeam is great. You don't want to have an issue, however, if you do, they can help you really fast, and they know what to do and they ask the right questions to get deep into the problem if you have something complex or difficult. They'll help you install a patch so that everything is fine. It's great.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price always could be lower, however, compared to others, it's pretty much in line with other options on the market.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I haven't really looked into other solutions. I've compared the open-managed integration for vCenter, and that's a really cheap one - however, it's hard to install and you often have issues. I would say it's a small giveaway from Dell as an add-on to the hardware.

What other advice do I have?

We're a customer and an end-user of the solution.

We have the Veeam plugin from Dell and Veeam ONE. Veeam ONE is in the availability suite we have ordered and we changed our hardware from Dell and for the last five years, we have the open-managed integration.

We're currently on version 11 and we updated the solution in February.

For those considering the solution, I would advise that they deactivate the alarm at first and then run it in a warning mode so that you can learn within the environment. Veeam has some limits, and these limits are often only baselines. You may have other limits as you have faster hosts or you have other storage, et cetera. If you run in warning mode, you can learn and put in the correct baselines. You can tune it and then you won't get so many alerts. Once you have tuned your environment against the Veeam baseline it's really comfortable to work with.

I'd rate the solution at an eight out of ten.

It is easy to recognize issues before they become significant although identifying hardware issues needs work

What is most valuable?

We like the alerting, reporting, and the dashboard features.

How has it helped my organization?

Using the reporting and dashboard features has allowed us to remain proactive with our infrastructure such as identifying datastores with high IOPS or an ESXi host with high memory utilization. Veeam ONE delivers this data in a user-friendly format that makes it easy to recognize issues before they become significant.

What needs improvement?

Veeam ONE does not easily recognize hardware issues within the infrastructure out of the box which costs some administrative overhead.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Veeam ONE for just over one year.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No issues encountered.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability has been perfect. Definitely no complaints in that area.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have a fairly small infrastructure so scalability isn’t something we’ve tested.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

We have not needed to contact Veeam customer service.

Technical Support:

We have not needed to contact Veeam technical support. Any configuration issues have been solved using their knowledge base.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) prior to using Veeam ONE. We switched to Veeam ONE when the decision to use a third party solution was implemented.

How was the initial setup?

Deployment was very easy and straightforward. It was mostly “Next, Next, Next, Finish” during the deployment.Connecting Veeam ONE to our vCenter and creating the SQL database on a remote host were the only details that required any focus.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented Veeam ONE in-house, specifically with just one administrator; very easy to implement.

What was our ROI?

ROI is difficult to measure in a cost center since we don’t produce revenue.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Veeam ONE was procured through a promotion that coupled it with Veeam Backup and Replication. We were interested in a backup solution for our hypervisor environment however Veeam ONE quickly proved to be a solution we intend to license for the long term. As I’ve already mentioned with the ease of setup and use, costs have been minimal.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Veeam ONE is actually complimenting a different product leveraged through a third party contract. The third party is responsible for monitoring our business-critical systems, however, we prefer Veeam ONE because it recognizes issues before the third party solution does and, because no Veeam ONE agent is required, we’re comfortable using two monitoring solutions with no significant resource overhead costs.

What other advice do I have?

Veeam ONE is the perfect solution for monitoring and managing your hypervisor infrastructure. However we rely on a different solution for systems that are not part of our hypervisor infrastructure such as our database servers.

My storage is pretty simple, consisting of (2) HP P2000 G3 SANs so I use the email notification feature on the controllers to notify me of storage hardware events. Veeam ONE picks up issues with the datastores so I seem to have the bases covered for storage.

A good management tool that offers a very good technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "Veeam ONE is a very good management product...The technical support is very good, and I think it's one of the best. The response time is very quick."
  • "Creating reports is a bit difficult, and you have to spend some time on it."

What is our primary use case?

Veeam ONE is a very good management product. With Veeam, you can control the underlying virtualization environment, along with VMware and Hyper-V. So, the product works with tools from other vendors.

What is most valuable?

The fact that it can make very good reports on Veeam Backup is a valuable feature. It offers very flexible reporting.

What needs improvement?

Improvement is required in infrastructure control because it generates reports on the infrastructure.

It would be good. It could be extended with, for example, collecting data from storage devices because you have the environment, which includes servers and storage devices. So, it would be good to have such integrations. It should have the ability to collect data from storage devices.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam ONE for a year and a half. My company is a reseller and partner of the solution.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability-wise, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability-wise, I rate the solution an eight or nine out of ten. Only three or four system administrators are using it.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is very good, and I think it's one of the best. The response time is very quick.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

There are other products for virtualization, but not for Veeam. I don't know any other product that covers Veeam, VMware, and Hyper V.

How was the initial setup?

The solution's initial setup process is not very complex. The setup phase is not difficult. Creating reports is a bit difficult, and you have to spend some time on it.

What about the implementation team?

The implementation was done with the help of our in-house team.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Veeam ONE is offered at a good price. Compared to its price, the functionality and features of the product are more important.

What other advice do I have?

Regarding the complexity of the processes in the solution, I would say that it is complex even though it is easy to solve. For a complex environment, I would definitely recommend the use of Veeam ONE. Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

A single solution to effectively monitor all environments
Pros and Cons
  • "The monthly reports come complete with graphs and summaries, it's really helpful."
  • "The threshold could be easier to configure."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution on a daily basis to monitor all of our environments.

We use it for supplemental monitoring. Veeam ONE is based on our VMware. Although we receive alerts with VMware, Veeam ONE goes another step further with analysis.

With Veeam ONE, we're easily able to determine what has been impacted. For example, VMware will get an alert for an ESX host, and Veeam ONE will know exactly what VMs and what applications are impacted. It's not our primary source of monitoring, but when we have an issue, we go to Veeam ONE to figure out exactly where things are and to help us connect the dots.

What is most valuable?

The reporting features are great for our business and managers, It takes a lot of the guesswork out. The monthly reports come complete with graphs and summaries, it's really helpful.

What needs improvement?

The threshold could be easier to configure. I would like to see more automation and integration with their own backups. Currently, you can stop and start a backup, but it would be nice if you could initiate a reinstall using Veeam ONE.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for roughly six years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We experience problems with our SQL database. Our SQL database grew quite large in size with Veeam ONE. This is an area for improvement. They should also provide more guidance regarding calculating how big the environment might grow for the SQL database. We experienced a couple of issues where the Veeam ONE server went down because the SQL database grew too much, and we had to recreate it a couple of times. We don't quite understand how the Veeam ONE database works and what causes it to grow so quickly.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support is responsive, however, there have been times when we have had problems, but the technical support will determine it's not a Veeam issue, so they just drop it. They will only help us if the issue is directly related to Veeam. They could go a bit further and give a few suggestions, but they don't. In some cases, we have to get both VMware support and Veeam support together on one call and go through our account rep to pressure them. They'll eventually do it, but you have to force their hand.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was quite straightforward. The Installation process was completed in one day.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We got the Veeam Enterprise Suite, which comes with Veeam ONE and Enterprise Manager. I'm not exactly sure what the pricing is.

What other advice do I have?

Veeam ONE is a great product. My main advice would definitely be to do a complete overview of the setup, and accurately design the database because otherwise, it will grow out of control.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give this solution a rating of eight.
