Executive Director - IT at a tech services company with 51-200 employees
R&D works efficiently and comes out with updates as necessary
Pros and Cons
- "The management and the dashboard are the solution's most valuable features."
- "The solution could integrate better with other platforms."
What is our primary use case?
Our clients are primarily cooperative banks, so they have a small bank domain. They may have branches of up to 15 to 20 small locations. They need to have multisite connectivity and we use the SonicWall VPN for that.
The CBS core banking systems connect the branch office to the head office. The CBS servers are in the data center at the core bank or head office and all branches connect to the head office through VPN connectivity. This allows them access to the core banking system.
What is most valuable?
The management and the dashboard are the solution's most valuable features.
What needs improvement?
There are some features that are available on Palo Alto or Cisco that don't exist. There isn't a depth of information on SonicWall.
The solution could integrate better with other platforms.
The solution should include SOS (Security Operations Systems) features for detection purposes. There should also be SEIM integrated with big players like IBM, etc.
It would be great if there could be a single appliance that can take care of all the security requirements of the organization.
For how long have I used the solution?
I don't specifically use the solution. I'm a pre-sales engineer and I offer the solution to our customers.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is very scalable. They have super-massive boxes as well. It can scale up to around 2,000 users or more. The solution also offers quite large appliances if a user needs even more. The solution offers everything from small users to larger branches.
We have a mixed number of users. A few are on FortiGate and a few are on SonicWall. We also have a few on Palo Alto. About 20% of our customers use SonicWall. Our users include security admins, and IT managers among others.
How are customer service and technical support?
We've been very satisfied with technical support. They are very supportive and their advice is very good.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was straightforward. If the ISP is good and the broadband connections are good, and, if the static IP is available, it only takes one to two days to deploy. After that, it's ready for testing and user training. With everything considered, deployment takes about three days.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We've evaluated other solutions such as Palo Alto, FortiGate and Checkpoint. We also work with them. In terms of the pricing for the customer, SonicWall is the best.
What other advice do I have?
We're official partners with SonicWall and system integrators. We're a platinum partner with Dell and silver partners with SonicWall. We're also partners with FortiGate
The solution is very good. It's stable and robust. There's great support for their anti-phishing and anti-virus software.
SonicWall is also working 24/7 in relation to viruses. There's a quick response and R&D works efficiently and comes out with updates as necessary. We've found SonicWall to be a great solution for current market conditions.
I'd rate the solution nine out of ten.

General Consul of Japan with self employed
Allows for remote access from home offices, but can't handle gigabyte speeds
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature of this solution is they have IT consultants that know SonicWall."
- "The overall menu is not very user-friendly and it could be easier."
What is our primary use case?
The primary use case of this solution is to provide remote access from home offices.
The deployment model we are using is on-premises.
How has it helped my organization?
Secure remote access is now available from home offices.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature of this solution is they have IT consultants that know SonicWall.
What needs improvement?
This solution is very slow, and the competitors have much higher speeds.
We are now running at gigabyte-speed and SonicWall just can't handle it.
For a user, doing the setup alone is hopeless because the menu structure is not very clear and many of the features are hidden. They are very difficult to access.
The overall menu is not very user-friendly and it could be easier.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
This solution is stable but very slow.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable. So far, we have had no issues.
There are approximately eight users.
How are customer service and technical support?
We have very good IT consultants who provide technical support.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was complex. You could not possibly do it yourself without an IT consultant.
What about the implementation team?
We had IT consultants help us with the implementation.
What other advice do I have?
We do not have a relationship with SonicWall, we are customers.
I would not recommend this solution without them speaking to an IT consultant. They have IT consultants, and it's recommended to use a consultant to handle it.
We are currently looking at other solutions because SonicWall just cannot compare and we feel that we need to increase the speed.
I would rate this solution a six out of ten.

IT Manager at Caritas Baby Hosptial
A high-performance and secure solution for remote access that also facilitates technical support
Pros and Cons
- "This solution has many options for remote desktop and access."
- "This is an expensive solution and I think that the price could be improved."
What is our primary use case?
We are using different products from SonicWall, and the SSL-VPN is part of our overall solution. We change appliance models approximately every three years.
We have an on-premises deployment, and these appliances are used with our data servers.
There are several things that we use the VPN for including remote access, accessing data on the file server, and using on-premises applications from the outside. There are many uses for this solution.
How has it helped my organization?
These are very nice appliances and they give us all that we need for our work in the hospital. It is a very secure appliance.
We are a hospital, and we have external support from different vendors who are also using SSL VPN. For example, we have technical support for our air conditioning system. If they need to fix something remotely, they can use SSL VPN and they can fix it without coming into the office.
This device makes the lives of our support team easy. If there is a problem then they can diagnose and repair issues remotely. This is very helpful for our hospital and for our management. It means a quicker resolution for any issues that we face.
What is most valuable?
This solution has many options for remote desktop and access.
It is very effective for file sharing, or if I need the file servers to share specific folders.
The performance is very good, as there is no delay.
It is very easy to manage and make our environment secure.
What needs improvement?
This is an expensive solution and I think that the price could be improved.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using this solution for more than ten years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
This is a very stable solution. We installed this most recent model perhaps seven or eight months ago, and nobody has complained of any problem.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The number of concurrent users depends on your license. We purchased a license for twenty-five users, which means that it does not scale above that unless you purchase additional licenses.
How are customer service and technical support?
Technical support for this solution is great. When we ask questions they answer them quickly.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was very easy for us. It is not complicated and the manuals are very clear.
We did have a slight complication on how to configure it on the firewall. This is a solution that is linked to the firewall, so having that type of configuration experience would have made it a little bit quicker. At the same time, the support from SonicWall was great. When we asked for help on this, they answered it very quickly.
When we changed to our most recent model, the users had no trouble adapting to it.
What about the implementation team?
I performed the deployment myself. I have experience with the previous models of this solution, so it was easy for me to install, configure, and make it secure.
This is not a complicated device. There were some changes in the users and the groups, and it was very easy to deal with and manage.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The cost of the licensing is based on the maximum number of concurrent users, and it costs a lot to add them.
What other advice do I have?
I am hoping to expand our use of this solution to accommodate remote access to hospital information system applications that our doctors and nurses use.
There is support for Citrix, but we do not have it so we have not tested this yet. Perhaps next year, we will try it.
This is a solution that I recommend for other institutions, including other hospitals. It has good functionality and security. It is built on the Linux operating system. It contains most of the features that I need for my users.
I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.
