Qlik Talend Cloud Room for Improvement

HJ
Herivao Jus Winny

The user interface of Talend Data Integration could be more simple and intuitive to reduce learning curves. Processing large volumes of data sometimes consumes a lot of resources. Automatic optimization would be very useful. Managing and deploying multiple jobs in complex environments could be easier with stronger versioning tools. Debugging and error tracking could be more visual and faster. It would be great to have more ready-to-use connectors for modern cloud and SaaS platforms. Real-time and streaming integration could be improved to complement batch processing. The documentation could be more detailed with more practical and concrete examples.

Qlik Talend Cloud could be improved with more advanced monitoring and flexible alerts, as well as better job performance visibility.

It would also help to have a better job version and comparison experience to support team collaborations. Additionally, having more detailed error messages and easier job debugging would be beneficial. Better cost and resource visibility would also help teams optimize their workloads.

I think the licensing price has increased due to Talent being taken over by Qlik. This is one reason that other projects I worked on previously are migrating to different tools. I think the licensing price could be reduced comparatively to how it was previously. That could be a better thing for Talent.

Extensive upskilling would be beneficial. The upskilling time certifications previously had no expiry date, but now they expire after two years. The period of certification could be increased to maybe five years.

Money has been saved because the team previously had sixteen members with licenses, but now it is around four people doing the work with the license version. We have many components that have helped us in performance as well as the time metric. We have reduced the time and increased performance. With only two licenses that are shared with the team, we have been getting the work done. I think it is a good investment currently.

I think the subscription-based model is concerning because as I mentioned, some of our other projects are migrating to different tools. Since the license is for three years, they cannot migrate to another tool easily. Due to that, they are migrating to other technology. The cost is also very high compared to previously. Some users find the enterprise options expensive, so they are migrating. Different tiers of costing are available, but they still do not come into all cases. Per user and license pricing is comparatively very increased for large companies.

Qlik Talend Cloud is doing well, but one improvement could be the integration of development functionalities we use in Talend Studio directly onto the Talend browser. Currently, that would allow us to perform drag-and-drop tasks online without needing to switch back to the studio.

The support in my experience is good, and the documentation is also helpful. However, having Talend Studio functionalities accessible through the browser would be a significant improvement.

Talend Data Integration can be improved by reducing the license cost, as it is a bit high compared to other tools, which can be a burden for small-scale companies wanting to buy a license.

The customer support for Talend Data Integration is good because I connect directly with the Talend support team when facing issues, and there is also a Talend technical architect who supports us.

There are always areas for improvement. They have actually in the last 12 months done a lot of work on the UI. If you had contacted me at Christmas last year, the UI was really dated. Now, they have not finished cleaning it up or bringing it into a new flash version. But because it has such a simple design, it is actually so easy to use. They have taken a lot of the complexity out of it, so you just click on a button and it does it all for you.

I think one weakness, which I might have worked around today, is spatial data. But that might change by Monday. That is again because there is so much functionality, actually the real weakness is they have got too much functionality, if that is a weakness. Because there are 10 ways to do everything, and each way has its own pros and cons, and you really have to make your decision about which way to implement it. When you have five developers or three developers doing something, it is very easy for three people to do the same thing three different ways.

On the flip side, that is one of its amazing strengths, as you are not locked into a very rigid way of doing something. It means that a lot of our custom environments are fantastic because we can just plug it in a slightly different way. But because it does so much, it is a lot to get your head around the whole thing. We tend to focus on the small stuff that we are adding value to right now.

I haven't worked with Talend Data Integration on real-time data processing; I have only seen the streaming component, and I think it can accommodate limited streaming, not at the level of larger big data platforms.

Regarding ETL, Talend Data Integration is great, but concerning real-time data processing, people are not really sure about Talend Data Integration or might not know how it provides such types of flexibilities. I haven't worked on this aspect in Talend Data Integration, so this is definitely an area where it lacks.

To elaborate on one drawback, if I am designing something in Talend Data Integration, I cannot backtrack in the flow. For example, if I read data from a source and transform it before applying complex aggregation in the third step, I cannot join this data with the second step. If I need to go back, I will have to use a memory component, or if I need to avoid memory consumption, I will have to read the data from step one again to join it with the third step.

I don't use the automated rule management feature in Talend Data Quality that much, so I cannot provide much feedback.

I may not know what Talend Data Quality can improve for data quality. I'm not well-versed with the latest technology, so I cannot suggest additional functions that could make the product better or simplify my work with it. Generally, whatever jobs we have written in Talend Data Quality are working fine, so I am satisfied with that.

It's lacking on the change data capture side. When we go into projects of that nature, we move over to other vendors to do the job. It would be helpful if they were stronger here.

I'd be interested in seeing the running of Python programs and transformations from within the studio itself. Right now, we have to call it from the CLI. We'd love to use it in the same way we use Java, with more simple copy-paste functionality.

The business model needs adjustment. It's based on the connector and the IP you want to connect with.

There isn't a great difference between this and other products. Globally, there is no big technical difference between this and others.

We'd like to see more connectors it the future.

The solution is not very transparent. You aren't sure what you are buying or what you need. It's hard to quantify the product.

They don't have any AI capabilities. Talend DQ is specifically for data quality, which only has data profiling. With Talend DQ, I cannot generate any reports today, so I need an ETL tool. It provides general Excel files, or I have to create some views. If instead of buying a new tool, Talend provides a reporting capability or solution, it would be great. It will reduce the development effort for creating these kinds of reports.

We also manage the infrastructure for Talend. From the licensing perspective, for cloud, they only have seat licenses where one person is tied to one license, but for on-premise, they have concurrent licenses. It would be really awesome if they can provide concurrent licenses for the cloud so that if one person is not there, somebody else can use that license. Currently, it is not possible unless a person deactivates his or her license and moves the same seat license to someone else. We are one of the biggest customers in the central zone of the US for Talend, and this is the feedback that we have provided them again and again, but they come back and say that they aren't able to provide concurrent licenses on the cloud.

In version 7.3, there is a feature for tokenization and de-tokenization of data. This is the feature that we are looking for. It is useful if somebody wants to see what we have masked and how do we demask it. This feature is not there in version 7.1. There are also a few other capabilities on the cloud, but we don't yet have a big footprint in the cloud.

In terms of what could be improved, there is not much. It's a basic server setup. It all depends upon what kind of software you want to put on that server. With the remote engine you are building an EC2 or you are setting up an EC2 instance and then pushing all your software there and then running it from there. I don't see any challenges with that.

Talend suite might have a missing product, particularly in the commercial master aspect. This would contribute to completing the overall picture, though the focus isn't necessarily on economic considerations. It would be beneficial to have added a greater openness in the tool, allowing for the presentation of data quality results in alternative tools, which would provide increased flexibility in sharing and utilizing data quality outcomes.

While I understand that I am using the open-source version, but the facility of having version control is to the point where you can share it with other developers in the team. I think that's the way the product was intentionally made. That way you don't have organizations using the open-source version and instead of using the paid version.

I would like to sync a project and do an upload from that current version, and then from GitLab, be able to download the latest one. It will make it easier to share code with teammates. This is most likely something that Talend Open Studio doesn't have intentionally so that organizations have to invest in the cloud.

If Talend were to be able to offer an annual license in which the number of integrations is the deciding factor, instead of the number of concurrent users developing, then that would make them a little bit more competitive when you're comparing them to, for example, were Workato or SnapLogic.

We were using TAC for the testing environments and another TAC for the production environment. We had to promote our code manually from one environment to another.

I would like to see them add a feature in TAC that exists in TMC where you have the ability with different environments to promote code easily from one to the other.

They lack in memory capacity. We had to add a new job server to deal with the new system we had.

I would like to see components added with routing and web services. We have many subsystems that are not being used with Talend to make them communicate. It would be better to have unified systems within Talend to be able to do so. Having it directly in Talend Data Management would be nice, or an ESB (Enterprise Service Bus) or some web service applications. Also to have a unified TAC, actually just having one environment or one Infospace for the entire environment.

The documentation from version to version could be more accurate. I have found information that is inaccurate or doesn't apply to the version I am trying to install or work in. Documentation could also be more user-friendly as it seems cumbersome with too much information, which probably is why I have found inaccurate information.

The application installation process needs improvement. They have an easy "non-secure" installation for trying out the subscription version. I would like to see installation instructions for a Production environment with system and server layout using SSL Security. It would go a long way to understand what Talend envisions as a best practice for a production environment.

An area that needs improvement is the administration of data and granting permission for the different developers working on the product at the same time. Talend is a great development tool but the administration, access rights, synchronization and phoning can be better.

New features I would like to see is changing the data capture and different connection abilities to the Oracle database because some connections are suitable for one customer and not for the other, as it is based on the environment architects or on the customer.

There is one place where I would appreciate an upgrade, if it is possible. If the SQL input controls could dynamically determine the schema-based on the SQL alone, it would simplify the steps of having to use a manually created and saved schema for use in the TMap for the Postgres and Redshift components. This would make things even easier. When it does guess the schema it tends to bring back every column from every table or every column from the table specified in the table name in the component. Sometimes, the SQL comes from multiple tables and has some transformations of data.

I do not know if it would even be possible, but if this could be figured out automatically for the column names and types, that would be amazing.

NullPointerExceptions are going to be the death of me and are a big reason for our transition away from Talend. One day, it is fine with a 1000 blank rows, then the next day, it will find one blank cell and it breaks down. When we are dealing with millions of rows of data, this can be super hard to find.

Heap space issues also plague us consistently. We maxed it out and it runs fine, then it doesn’t, then it does.

Finding assistance with issues can be spotty. With Python, there are literally millions of open source answers which are recent and apply to the version that we are using.

Inconsistency is a big issue.
