The ETL component extracts data from different source systems. It should be easier for users to access other data.

What is most valuable?

I believe the most valuable feature is the ETL, the component to extract the data from the source system.

How has it helped my organization?

It allows us to bring data from key systems together and provide useful information in metric form to our leaders.

What needs improvement?

I’d like to see an easier way to go ahead and allow users to access other data, maybe to query it and so forth; maybe from a user, UI perspective. I've noticed, as I’ve mentioned, other tools that are out there. It's very much about the user experience, and I don't know if the current look and feel is lending towards that.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It works well. I think it was more of the implementation that we faced. Once we got the kinks worked out of it, it seems to work pretty well. The load seems to be completely maintainable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I think it's scalable. It just might not seem that it's as easy. We do have other products now that are coming into the market that are a lot easier for us to go ahead and use a mixed set of data.

How are customer service and support?

We haven't been using the support as much. We have contractors and consultants that we're working with already that provide us that help as an alternative service.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did have BusinessObjects. We had it for many years, and it's very old. I don't think that it was scalable. It didn't have the performance that we were looking at and the capability of pulling in outside mixed data.

How was the initial setup?

I was not involved in the initial setup, but I did hear about it from the other team members. As I’ve mentioned, we had an implementation partner involved with this, and it didn't work out as well. I think that they tried to give us a tool out-of-the-box, and then we definitely needed customizations to work with our data.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

At the time that we made the decision to go with this product, there weren’t that many other players in this area. Over the past three years or so, there's been a surge of new players in the market. We've probably had OBIEE for about five years now. At the time, it was pretty new. There weren't a whole lot of options and OBIEE was probably the best tool around.

When I’m looking for a vendor such as Oracle, the most important criteria I consider are the partnership and the support. We've been an Oracle shop for a long time and I know that there are certain relationships that I've had with the account team. That's important. I think that, again, really working together and providing us information that will help us make the decisions towards new solutions, whether with Oracle or with Dell. Then, definitely, if we need help with escalations and so forth we can turn to them.

What other advice do I have?

I think that you really need to understand your data analytics strategy to understand which functions and features that you're looking for. The business itself needs to be ready to take this on because it's definitely not an IT solution. The premise around a lot of the analytics solutions is really to empower the business now to take the ball and run with it, create their own reports, create their own dashboards. You need to make sure that the business is able to go ahead and have the skill sets to start taking up that responsibility, or at least to come up with a roadmap of how they're going to get there.

It does what it's supposed to and it will work, but it definitely can be better.

We can import data from Excel files, CSV files, along with our ERP systems.

Valuable Features

The most valuable feature is that we don't have to do anything. They give the code by themselves. We just have to do minor customizations. Its usability is really good. When we implement the tool, we can implement it in a short span of time and start doing enhancements on the basis. It's really good; a good tool.

They offer multiple database support. We can import data from Excel files, CSV files, along with our ERP systems. I just think that’s a cool thing.

Room for Improvement

The only thing is: Upgrades are critical. They are migrating their business intelligence systems. They have introduced cloud-based analytical solutions. I like where it is going, but with what we have been using, we are facing difficulties in upgrading and so on.

Use of Solution

In my company, they have been using it for seven or eight years.

I've been working on OBIEE since the beginning of my career, around eight or nine years.

Stability Issues

This is definitely a stable solution.

One feedback would be that their upgrade is not as easy as other cloud solutions. You have to install the software again and migrate the repositories. That's kind of bad; that's a negative.

Nonetheless, it could serve as a business solution for the whole organization, multiple business teams, and so on.

Scalability Issues

The solution is definitely scalable. I have seen it grow with my company. Once the tool is implemented, multiple teams want to exploit the tool, derive different business cases out of it and build different dashboards out of it. They give a base system, on which we can do ad-hoc reporting. Dashboard development is also extensive with OBIEE.

Customer Service and Technical Support

Technical support is quick actually. I've been communicating with those guys regarding multiple issues. The support is good. They look into our issue and give the best possible solution to us. So far, it has worked out good. They're definitely knowledgeable. They are knowledgeable about the issues. They figure it out and give out multiple possible ways to approach the problem and find a solution.

Other Advice

This is definitely a good tool. I recommend it. Moreover, if someone was thinking about implementing this solution and they came to me, I would have a quick chat telling them the pros and cons we faced during the implementation. I would give them ideas about how useful it was for our business.

We use it for reporting and find the analysis to be valuable.

Valuable Features

We do all of our reporting out of OBIEE, and the analysis is valuable. Moving clients over has been a big step for us. Coming into web, we segregated our web interface data entry as opposed to just reporting to OBIEE Analysis. We also have publishers on great front-end tools for the presentation side of it.

Room for Improvement

They can always improve on the user interface, and the publisher could get some new features.

Use of Solution

We have used it for four years now.

Stability Issues

It has consistently been stable.

Scalability Issues

We foresee it meeting our needs for the future. Financials and advancement to our team was big. It has been able to handle everything so far.

Customer Service and Technical Support

Tech support is knowledgeable. We use the community, which is helpful.

Other Advice

It’s a nice stable tool. All the dashboards, iPad support and other features have been great for us, and we totally rely on it. I would rate it an eight out of ten.

We have scheduled reports delivered automatically to our business users using enterprise features
Pros and Cons
  • "The performance can issue queries to work in the Oracle database in Oracle's native language. There are a lot of visualizations which suit our business."
  • "It is easy to create a report quickly. It does not take much time to create an ad hoc report."
  • "We have scheduled reports delivered automatically to our business users using enterprise features."
  • "It's not so flexible to do BI reporting directly from the data source without models. It is not that agile."
  • "We were not satisfied with the support, because we could not obtain answers or solutions."

What is our primary use case?

Primary use case, we use it for slicing and dicing service reporting. Our business is using Oracle BI to deliver business, marketing, and financial reports. Technology mainly does the modeling, and the business is creating the reports. We don't have any problems with the enterprise reporting.

It performs very well, because we are using Oracle Exadata. Oracle BI accesses Oracle Exadata, and it performs very well since Oracle Exadata has great performance.

How has it helped my organization?

We have been using the Oracle stack for a long time. So, it was a natural choice to use Oracle BI.

What is most valuable?

The performance can issue queries to work in the Oracle database in Oracle's native language. There are a lot of visualizations which suit our business.

It shares quite a lot of features which suit us. For example, we have scheduled reports delivered automatically to our business users using enterprise features.

It is easy to create a report quickly. It does not take much time to create an ad hoc report.

What needs improvement?

Now, we have more demands to load data somewhere quickly, not seeped into a model, like data warehouse model. We need to load it somewhere like a data lake and have a tool which can analyze the information very quickly without creating a model. So, our business has a need to have a sandbox, or something similar to it analyze unstructured data that does not fit into the data warehouse model, along with joining unstructured data with structured data from the data warehouse. However, I am not sure that the BI tool is the right tool to do this, it is more of a data discovery tool.

With Oracle BI, we need technology to create the model, then the business uses this model to create reports. If they wanted to analyze data quickly which is not in the data warehouse model, then we cannot use Oracle BI for it, or it's not so suitable.

For how long have I used the solution?

More than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In the beginning, it was not so good. Now, with the version 11.7 and 12, we are satisfied and don't have any problems.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

In the beginning, it was not so good. Now, with the version 11.7 and 12, we are satisfied and don't have any problems.

How are customer service and technical support?

We used the technical support a few years ago. We were not satisfied with the support, because we could not obtain answers or solutions. The problems that we had were recognized as bugs, and they would say, "It will be fixed in the next releases," and it was fixed, but it took time. Basically, it was not a pleasant experience to work with My Oracle Support.

We had at our disposal updates, new features, and new releases, which was good. We downloaded and upgraded, but regarding the problems that we had, we were not satisfied. The last problem that we had was about four or five years ago, and we haven't had problems since.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously didn't have a BI solution.

How was the initial setup?

We first used Oracle 10, then Oracle 11, and afterwards moving to 11.3 until we got to Oracle 12. The initial setup was not complex. Although, in the past, when we had to upgrade, we had to install another version, and move the reporting to it. Now, we can do an in-place update. So, it is not so complicated.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We had more than one quotation, then we chose the product based on a type of questionnaire with scoring. I think Oracle made the high score at that time (2010). It was between Oracle and Cognos at that time.

There are now tools like Tableau or Power BI that enable you to do BI analysis without any model in the background. You can just connect to the database, or any other unstructured data source and do whatever you like, probably with more fancy visualizations. Although I'm a technical person, these things are more important to our business people.

Oracle is an Enterprise BI tool. You have to do the modeling based on that model, then you can do whatever you like. However, it's not easy. It's not so flexible to do BI reporting directly from the data source without models. It is not that agile.

What other advice do I have?

It's a very good tool for plain Enterprise BI reporting and usual BI reporting. It's not a tool for data discovery. If you want to do old-fashioned plain BI reporting and have a large company where you want your business users to have the possibility to have reports delivered to them automatically, then Oracle BI is a good tool. If you want to be more agile and do more data discovery on unstructured data which is not well-known, then Oracle BI would not be the best choice.

What needs improvement?

Particularly on the Cloud, a lot of functionality has yet to be ported.

For how long have I used the solution?

How is customer service and technical support?

An eight out of 10.

How was the initial setup?

Straightforward and easy to setup.

What other advice do I have?

For financial planning with WorkForce and CapEx, it's definitely the product to go for.
