For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Informatica MDM for five years. I use the solution's latest version. I am a user of the solution.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability-wise, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability-wise, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Around 250 users of the solution exist in my company.

There is a need to use the solution in my company at least three times a week.

How are customer service and support?

I rate the technical support an eight out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have experience with other solutions. I switched to Informatica MDM from other solutions since it offers better scalability options and interoperability.

How was the initial setup?

I rate the product's initial setup a seven on a scale of one to ten, where one is a difficult setup process, and ten is an easy setup process.

My company has deployed Informatica MDM with the services offered by our cloud partner.

Informatica MDM's deployment phase takes around a year to be completed.

Two people, who are data engineers specialized in Informatica MDM, are required for the deployment phase of the product.

What about the implementation team?

Informatica MDM's deployment phase was carried out with the help of my company's in-house team and Informatica's partner.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I rate Informatica MDM's price a six on a scale of one to ten, where one is a low price, and ten is a high price.

What other advice do I have?

Ideally, only one person is required to take care of the maintenance part of the product, but with the number of terminals where the solution is deployed, there may be a need for three or four people.

I recommend the solution to those who plan to use it.

I rate the overall solution an eight out of ten.

A Master Data Management solution with robust matching technology
Pros and Cons
  • "I like that Informatica MDM has robust matching technology. Informatica MDM is also porting the external Java applications for validations. I can consider that a must-have. It is also exposed to Rest API calls, and we can engage in real-time integrations with any third-party systems."
  • "The configurations could be better. It is a bit confusing because we must develop two tools when building a data model in Informatica MDM. Even though Informatica MDM is a single tool, we have our hub console plus the provisioning tool within that. Whatever data model we are building in the hub console, we have to develop it in the provisioning tool again. It is double the work to create a data model. We are also using external calls or the Java custom plans functions. This can be both positive and negative. Since MDM as a client does not support any complex validation, we have to depend on the external call or a Java call. Every time we deployed, the entire solution was impacted if something went wrong."

What is our primary use case?

We use Informatica MDM for master data maintenance across our organization. We have multiple departments, like material real estate, trading, and supply. We use it for consolidation, harmonization, and central master data maintenance. We are also integrating it with the nonrecipient systems.

What is most valuable?

I like that Informatica MDM has robust matching technology. Informatica MDM is also porting the external Java applications for validations. I can consider that a must-have. It is also exposed to Rest API calls, and we can engage in real-time integrations with any third-party systems.

What needs improvement?

The configurations could be better.

This can be both positive and negative. Since MDM as a client does not support any complex validation, we have to depend on the external call or a Java call. Every time we deployed, the entire solution was impacted if something went wrong.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Informatica MDM for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Informatica MDM can be more stable. There are some issues and some crashes, and sometimes, with the data load, we usually feel like we are doing an initial data load for any project. Sometimes, it could also be down to the production environment.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give stability a six.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Informatica MDM is a scalable solution. We probably have 1000 direct and indirect users with multiple use cases. But people solely working with Informatica MDM might be around 200 or 300. Most users are from business IT data support.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give scalability an eight.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is very responsive.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I was using SAP MDM, which is currently end of its life, so we migrated from SAP MDM to Informatica MDM.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. We have to make a jar file which we have to download from the link and download it as a client in our local mission. However, there are some challenges if we deploy Informatica MDM with IDQ on-premises. The deployment time depends on the use case. One or two people can maintain this solution.

What was our ROI?

We have seen a return on investment. From a business perspective, there have been many improvements since we migrated from SAP MDM.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Informatica MDM to potential users. Even though Informatica MDM does not come with data quality, Informatica as a whole has some of the right tools. We have embedded the MDM with the IDQ informatic data quality in ways we can interact. It is the best fit for non-SAP systems.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give Informatica MDM an eight.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Private Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Core master data management solution that offers robust match concepts and algorithms
Pros and Cons
  • "It has been leading the market with hierarchy management and all the different match concepts and algorithms. They're very robust."
  • "Informatica's issue is the licensing. Right now, there are a lot of new gen MDMs that are offering a lot in a single licensing model."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution primarily for core master data management and deduplication.

Recently, they have come up with cloud versions, which I have not experienced. It's mostly deployed on-premise.

We have a limited number of users who are using this solution and working with the master data.

What is most valuable?

Initially, there wasn't a great product competing with Informatica for market management. It has been leading the market with hierarchy management and all the different match concepts and algorithms. They're very robust.

What needs improvement?

Informatica's issue is the licensing. Right now, there are a lot of new gen MDMs that are offering a lot in a single licensing model. VOS or Entity 360 are offering licensing differently.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with this solution for more than 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's stable and reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's scalable.

How are customer service and support?

I have had mixed experience with technical support. Sometimes it's very quick. Sometimes there isn't a quick turnaround and we don't have a person to reach out to directly to get an answer from them.

How was the initial setup?

Installation was challenging. Informatica has a very robust engine, which takes a little bit of time, but they're stable.

We have a technical team of 50 people. Deployment depends on
the size and complexity of the requirements. Starting from scratch, any new implementation should take around five to six months. For new gen MDMs, the implementation can be done in three and a half months.

What was our ROI?

The ROI depends on the business requirement. If they're using their core master data and that data is helping them to address a lot of issues, then the return on investment is definitely very high. If an organization isn't using that to full scale, then it might not be that great.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's offers value for money. They're more competitive with respect to pricing and offerings.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Can be built to handle integration, data modeling, and data governance under one umbrella
Pros and Cons
  • "It comes with lot of features and is a one-stop-shop solution for integration, data modeling, and data governance. Everything can be built under one particular umbrella. If any issues come up, then there won't be any blame game saying that it could be an integration issue or an MDM hub issue because it's wholly owned by Informatica. That's the biggest advantage of Informatica MDM over that of any other tools that are available on the market."
  • "This is a costly solution. We have several customers who evaluate it but then look for other solutions because of the cost. At present, Informatica MDM comes as an on-premises or cloud-based solution. I would like to see them offer a SaaS-based MDM model. I think they are working on it."

What is most valuable?

It comes with lot of features and is a one-stop-shop solution for integration, data modeling, and data governance. Everything can be built under one particular umbrella. If any issues come up, then there won't be any blame game saying that it could be an integration issue or an MDM hub issue because it's wholly owned by Informatica. That's the biggest advantage of Informatica MDM over that of any other tools that are available on the market.

It has given us a lot of flexibility in terms of solutions.

What needs improvement?

This is a costly solution. We have several customers who evaluate it but then look for other solutions because of the cost.

At present, Informatica MDM comes as an on-premises or cloud-based solution. I would like to see them offer a SaaS-based MDM model. I think they are working on it.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've worked with Informatica MDM for close to a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have not had any performance issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is good depending on the SLA. Sometimes, they do have a busy schedule. When I contacted them for issues, someone joined the call if he/she was ready. Otherwise, we have had to wait for a day or two.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Informatica MDM is a costly solution because it comes as a bundle. They are also globally positioning themselves and are definitely working on very upgraded technologies. If someone wanted to do it on the cloud, they have a lot of flexibility because they upgrade themselves according to the current needs. It definitely comes with a lot of features and that's the reason why it's costly.

The licensing cost should be approximately one million dollars. It's about four to five times that of other vendors.

What other advice do I have?

Take a look at your budget first and then proceed with this solution.

On a scale from one to ten, I give Informatica MDM a nine.

It eliminates the need to run a full tokenization process during the match and merge process, but Informatica's internal testing should have caught many of the bugs we found.

What is most valuable?

The improved interface (IDD), eliminating the need to run a full tokenization process during match & merge process allowing 24x7 access to on-line users, and its better interface in console.

How has it helped my organization?

In the previous version, over 5,000 users of our on-line customer maintenance application were unable to use the application for approximately 12 hours every weekend while the match & merge function was run. Since upgrading, the overall time to execute M&M has decreased and the on-line users are able to add, update & search for customer records 24x7.

What needs improvement?

We experienced several basic issues with the product that required daily meetings with Informatica product specialists. Several Emergency Bug Fixes (EBFs) were required to fix the issues. It was felt that the vendors internal testing should have caught many of these issues and not been found by a customer.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used it for six years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Deployment was very smooth due to extensive planning between the development and application support teams. A two week outage was planned and communicated. However the overall outage lasted only eight days. Running the Readiness scripts in production for several weeks before deployment, eliminated this step from the deployment process, and corrected data issues. Also, deployment activities ran faster in production environment than they did when performing upgrade steps in other environments (Dev, Val & POC).

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Several issues were encountered in production that required immediate remediation that were not found during the 10 week QA cycle. After four weeks that system is stable and the operations team is able to complete daily & weekly cycles without issue.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There were very few changes to the database, and the same number of customers were being processed. A HealthCheck by Informatica was performed before starting the process to assure that the existing infrastructure was adequate for the new version.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Overall it's very good. Once a point person was assigned by Informatica, all the issues were consolidated into a single tracking spreadsheet that was reviewed daily. Tracking tickets were still submitted, but we did receive expert attention to resolve issues quickly.

Technical Support:

Very good. Although, most technical support is off-shore, and there were issues with working time that prevented internal staff from interacting with off-shore experts.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

No – just a long over due upgrade from 9.0.1 to 9.7.1.

How was the initial setup?

The upgrade process is straightforward, and well documented. This process was executed multiple times as different environments were being built. By the time the production environment needed to be upgraded, it was almost standard. A separate Proof-of-Concept (POC) environment was developed to allow the developers to “play” with the new version and test functionality.

What about the implementation team?

A combination of in-house and a vendor team. It was difficult to find anyone who had expertise with 9.7.1, so both teams learned during the project. The vendor team (Wipro) did have Informatica MDM experience in various version that allowed them to contribute to the design of the upgraded system.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have a global license which was outside of the cost of the upgrade project.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

No other options were evaluated.

What other advice do I have?

The upgrade is straightforward if you currently have Informatica implemented. Don’t wait too long to upgrade, we waited five years between upgrades, and will not do so again. If this is you first MDM implementation, spend as much time forming data governance program as you do on the technical piece. The major vendors in the MDM space (Informatica, IBM, SAP & Oracle) have similar functionality. Informatica has been slowly integrating their legacy ETL product into the former Siperian product to make a very robust product.

Hi Man,

10/10 !!! Thank you for making your blogs an embodiment of perfection and simplicity. You make everything so easy to follow.

Q1, Update Strategy vs. Treat Source Rows As: wrong. The UPD just tells the pmdtm process whether the current record shall be inserted into the target, updated (according to the update details!), deleted from the target, or rejected. Data Driven just means that the flag set by the UPD shall be observed, instead of handling all records the same way.
When the UPD flags a record as DD_UPDATE, then the choice between Update Else Insert , Insert Else Update, or Update As Update will be followed.
In all other cases this choice does not apply.

OK, one additional BUT: if you flag a record for DD_INSERT but you don't check the checkbox "Insert", then the record will NOT be inserted into the target table.
The same holds true for the three Update flags and the Delete flag in the appropriate manner.

Q2, SCD without an UPD: if you want to work without an UPD transformation, then you will need separate mappings and sessions for the INSERT records, the UPDATE records, and the DELETE records.

Q3: where's the difference to Q2?

Q4, default values:
Treat Source Rows As = Insert
Insert, Update As Update, and Delete are checked by default.

I am so grateful for your blog. Really looking forward to read more.

Thank you,
Sanjay

Best tool for matching capability and handling large volumes
Pros and Cons
  • "Informatica MDM stands out as a tool that can give you the flexibility needed for doing channel-specific data quality or business validation."
  • "The configuration process is pretty lengthy and challenging and could be made easier to understand."

What is our primary use case?

Typical use cases for Informatica MDM include consent management (for a large telecom vendor in Australia), master-data consolidation and analytics for vendors, facilitating vendor onboarding, and syndicating and automating global data synchronization networks.

What needs improvement?

The configuration process is pretty lengthy and challenging and could be made easier to understand.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Informatica MDM for over ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Informatica MDM is a very stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Informatica MDM is highly scalable - we've set it up for a customer with over a hundred million customers, and the system worked quite well.

How are customer service and support?

Informatica's technical support is great - I was amazed by the quality of their technical people and the support they provide, as well as their willingness to provide it.

How was the initial setup?

Because it's on-prem, the initial setup is of medium complexity.

What other advice do I have?

Informatica MDM stands out as a tool that can give you the flexibility needed for doing channel-specific data quality or business validation. I don't think any tools come near it in terms of its matching capability and the volume it can handle. Unless your budget is a constraint, it's definitely the way to go. I would give Informatica MDM a rating of nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
