We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The product is very easy to deploy.""The solution is very easy to use, it is not really complex for any user, such as non-technical individuals.""I like StorageWorks' snapshots for our backup system. We had a pool of SSD and traditional drives. StorageWorks has a feature that transfers the hot data to high-performing drives.""Monitoring is a very big thing. Other great features include block storage; volume creation and the data reliability scalability, which makes the solution really good.""The solution is pretty transparent and works well.""The cost to performance for HPE StorageWorks MSA is good.""The simple configuration feature is great. It is very simple, allowing you to set up MSA very easily.""The most valuable features are the storage levels and snapshot features."

"Acropolis' main advantages are high performance and availability.""To receive a performance enhancement by merely clicking the one button upgrade is the true value of the platform and what I look forward to the most.""The virtualization environment is now much easier to manage and maintain, there is only one vendor to call in case of issues and one single console to manage everything.""The most valuable feature I have found to be the Acropolis Hypervisor (AHV).""Nutanix Acropolis AOS makes it easy to use and manage projects and it has a good reputation.""The tool is simple, stable, and easy to upgrade. It also requires few resources to manage, which simplifies our work. The solution's ease of upgrading is its valuable feature. AHV, provided by Nutanix, is excellent in performance and ease of use. It's based on an open-source product called KVM, which I also use for other services.""It has seamless expandability.""Ability to create multiple VMs."

Cons
"The solution's license should be integrated and not separate.""HPE StorageWorks MSA could maybe include a pay-top of texture feature or something like job replication.""I rate HPE support four out of 10. I'm not happy with them. We purchased mission-critical support, and we're supposed to get a response in four hours. Instead, I'm waiting days for them to replace the drive. They asked me to send back the failed one, and I don't know the address. After I sent it back, they told me they haven't received it. It's a nightmare.""It would be ideal if there was a better management interface.""There is room for improvement in terms of scalability. There are times when we need to upgrade the device and the firmware. Sometimes, that can be a struggle.""This product is getting a little bit older, so new features like deduplication are not included.""Some clients have suggested room for improvement in expanding storage capacity beyond the base traces.""The solution could improve by adding configuration tools."

More HPE StorageWorks MSA Cons →

"We have a team that does the implementation of the solution for our customers, it is better to have professionals handle the process.""When we have issues with the solution, they tend to be around networking.""The product needs improvement in the areas of SAN attachment for high capacity and high I/O profile workloads.""Pricing and varieties of options could be better.""They could improve the graphical user interface.""The self-service side of the product needs to be improved. We should be able to add two-factor authentication and more security layers to it.""This solution would be improved with built-in integration with Rubrik.""There is a feature that exists used for disaster recovery, but it requires an extra license. It should be included with the regular normal standard license."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "When we bought this solution it was very reasonably priced and they were willing to deal."
  • "This solution is quite expensive; they should lower the cost."
  • "This solution involves a one-time CapEx payment, followed by warranty extensions."
  • "The price of the solution is a little high and they should provide more competitive pricing. If you want to increases the storage size there are additional fees."
  • "The solution can be a bit expensive."
  • "HPE StorageWorks MSA's licensing is perpetual and not integrated."
  • "I would rate the pricing as nine out of ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive."
  • More HPE StorageWorks MSA Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Able to grow with smaller, more linear increments of investment"
  • "The basic license that comes with the box allows basic virtualization features but advanced automation features would require an upgrade of licenses."
  • "I know Nutanix and VxRail have similar prices and licenses. Nutanix is a go-ahead if AHV is used as hypervisor because it is already embedded in the price."
  • "While cost may seem higher than your traditional 3-tier architecture, you need to look at the bigger picture. You're not just buying hardware here. You're buying a complete environment."
  • "Setup cost is minor, pricing is quite a bit (we have a 7-node-cluster for about 450K EUR with 2 vGPU-nodes for Citrix) but that includes hardware, software, and support."
  • "The price is good but I think there is still room for improvement on the price."
  • "Extra features should not be so expensive. We would love to be able to use or even just try some of the extra features without having to buy them. Buying those features is just as expensive as buying vSphere licenses, so the cost savings is nullified."
  • "Work close with your InfraTeam and discuss with Nutanix the best way to achieve sizing and price that are right for you."

I urge all to look past the hot air and hype frenzy that are going on, because in the end, the HC platforms have to be aligned and congruent to the organization’s data architecture and business plans. The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
