vCenter Configuration Manager Room for Improvement

Karthik PR - PeerSpot reviewer

When vCenter is in a Microsoft environment, there is a lot of licensing involved, where we face some difficulties. Moreover, some functionalities may be hidden in VMware. Everything depends upon the licensing because they have segregated two or three different versions of licenses. Everything is easier when you know all the terms and policies. Some things will be hidden when your customer asks for it, but you check with them to get confirmation and support from VMware. However, when people are newly entering the market and they want some support from VMware, the support received from them is pathetic.

The management and the way teams are defined can be improved. If the solution could manage on-premises and cloud resources with the help of one tool, it would be an extra agent. Further, the price could be improved.

One area that could be improved is the integration of all VMware services.

Other areas for improvement include integration, stability, support, and pricing.

The only challenge my company faces with the solution in relation to the customers is something that is directly related to the tool's pricing. If we compare vCenter Configuration Manager with Nutanix, the latter has a clearer strategy in regard to pricing and licensing. With VMware's recent changes, customers are confused about the tool. The challenges related to the tool are not technical in nature, as they are more about sales for me.

From an improvement perspective, if VMware offers one interface like Nutanix to operate all its tools, then it will be a perfect product.

The primary global issue that I've encountered during my many years working in IT, both in basic implementations and operator-level tasks, is a universal challenge and it evolves around the user interface, or more precisely, the lack of user-friendliness in IT systems. The speed at which technology evolves, new categories emerge, and customer expectations, especially in cybersecurity, are exceptionally high. Many major industry players like VMware, Microsoft, and Oracle often fall short in software coding and the smooth release of new versions. The second significant challenge relates to automation features and reports. These elements should be more consolidated and should transition from text-based to graphical representations to make them more understandable for decision-makers and eliminate the need for administrators to scour the internet for best practices and knowledge.

The dashboards in vCenter Configuration Manager are an area with certain shortcomings where improvements are required.

Some functionalities in vCenter Configuration Manager are lacking regarding how it can be automated.

Someone told me that the latest version of the solution has some automated configuration and compliance management in place. I should probably try and get the solution's latest version to get the most out of the solution.

With vCenter Configuration Manager in my company, we still cannot deploy anything else apart from Linux and Windows. There are limitations in the solution, and because of this, I cannot deploy anything else, like with regard to VMware infrastructure using vCenter Configuration Manager. There is also an issue in the solution with regard to the utilization of other available resources. The aforementioned details can be considered for improvement in the solution.

It would be good if vCenter Configuration Manager's technical support team could provide a response to the issues faced by its users as soon as possible.

We would like to improve the UI interface and customer experience in vCenter Configuration Manager.

We need a speed-based system, which is methodology checked. The migration functions, from one hardware to another and the nodes must be a partner of four nodes, which acts as a weakness. They should have advanced training and course material for vCenter solutions.

The product's ability to support memory should be increased in the future as it is currently an area of concern in the solution.

Some of the migrations are difficult to manage since the solution is not compatible with a few of the operating systems, which poses a challenge during the physical to virtual migration process.

Acquiring certifications often require extensive training and successfully passing an exam, which can be costly and time-consuming, particularly if you already possess experience in the domain. As a result, this can increase the overall cost of obtaining certification and may present a challenge that requires addressing.

We would like to see free certification or notification of free training programs.

There is always room for improvement. The VxRail configuration is very complicated and a little bit too difficult to guess what the final product is going to be.

The product needs better integration with security tools. It's a feature that you wouldn't need to have for something like Cisco or that type of thing. Something of that magnitude would already be built into the product.

It would be better to integrate this infrastructure with native cloud environments, but we can't do it. We are trying to improve our experience by converting our infrastructure through virtualization on native cloud environments and workloads. It's the most important thing for us. I think that it should be tightly coupled with native cloud environments.

The licensing model has shifted from socket-based to core-based licensing, resulting in increased customer costs. Moreover, if a customer utilizes software like VMware, which integrates seamlessly with ESXi, it becomes even more challenging to consider replacing ESXi. Hence, many customers, particularly in India, are actively exploring alternatives.

They should make it easier to log in and communicate with them. At the moment, I'm using vRealize Log Insight because it's a pretty easy tool to keep up to date with everything. But it would be easier if I could do it through vCenter Configuration Manager. I think the logging side should be improved because it's pretty difficult to keep up to date VMware and with vCenter.

The solution could use an internal cloud service. It should offer a vCloud foundation, but on-premises. For example, a small cloud environment or something that can be built on-premises and not hosted by Microsoft or other big hosting sites. We'd like to use some sort of vCloud to take the risks away from headquarters. The resources would be on-site on the customer side.

There are some complexities within the system center. For example, we use two different applications for updates and the deployment of the machine. We also have another third party solution.

However, a third-party solution is dedicated to vulnerability management. And all the updates that have to be deployed to a specific product. You spend a lot of time in configuration due to the fact that you need to make sure all of your machines are compliant. Compliance is complicated.

This is a good solution but it has too many configurations for what it does. In that sense, it's not particularly user friendly and requires too many clicks. From reviews I've read, I believe Acropolis might be easier to use in this regard.

Configuration Manager should decrease the deployment time in the data center and the management time as this could help many data centers reduce their operating costs.

I think most of VMware's software is easy and simple to use but they lack the capability to manage other systems. When working with some other software out there you have a total solution for managing and configuring your data centers. Many other virtualization systems have this feature, and it would be a good idea for VMware to switch to this approach because I think most data centers are looking for total solutions to manage their data centers. Our trends show that this kind of simple management software is going to be a part of orchestration systems.

Overall, I think it's good enough to use for most customers who have VMware solutions in their data centers.

Honestly, I do not feel like I am an expert with the product who can suggest technical enhancements. The setup and implementation could probably be better. It does not seem like we should have to do so much manual configuration. Instad of supplying everything manually at the prompts, it should offer some options for automation of the setup. I guess something like that is already available, but if it is I do not know it. If automating the updates were possible to do it would be very nice.

The main issue I have with vCenter Configuration Manager is that when I have a problem or error, I have to search a lot to get the solution. There isn't a clear document, and in some instances, none at all. There isn't a clear document covering all the errors. It would be helpful if the company provided better documentation for solving issues.

Additionally, I'd like to see more automation features in the next releases. If they could add more automation features to make the configuration and implementation processes easier, that would be good.
