We primarily use the solution for data warehousing.
Data Architect, Section Head at a energy/utilities company with 10,001+ employees
Good data warehousing, scalable, and offers good functionality
Pros and Cons
- "The functionality of the solution is excellent."
- "I'm not sure about the unstructured data management capabilities. It could be improved."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
The loading time of the solution is quite good.
What really impressed me is their approach to design the data warehouse. It's very different from other solutions. They have their own methodologies for doing things, and they can come up with a very solid and good design that can stand the test of time.
The functionality of the solution is excellent.
The solution can scale.
It's quite a stable product.
On the product side, I don't think anyone can actually beat them with data warehousing.
What needs improvement?
I'm not sure about the unstructured data management capabilities. It could be improved.
They should, I think, try to do more of this open-source initiative to encourage more people to use it. Otherwise, it's my opinion that they might lose our business in the long run.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the solution for about three years at this point.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
As one of the top companies in the world, the solution is very stable. There aren't bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's quite good.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Product-wise the scalability and usability, is all excellent. They are the top players in this with their new database. The cloud helps make it so scalable. We're catching up and starting to scale, however, we aren't there yet.
How was the initial setup?
I don't recall if the solution had a complex or straightforward setup. I wasn't part of the process.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I'm not sure if we would want to keep paying for the solution. They should make some of the software a community edition or something like that to encourage more people to use it.
What other advice do I have?
This is a very good solution.
After looking at the recent price drops, they need to offer very good discounts for people that bought it. The value proposition is actually quite good compared to many years ago. For most of the enterprises out there, they're focusing mainly on structure data. This solution ticks that box.
As long as they can control the price incrementally in the future, I think they're a very good strong platform.
I'd rate this product in terms of its functionality, stability, and scalability, as almost perfect. It's a nine out of ten. I don't think there's anything to complain about. It's only the price that's a sticking point for us.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Program Director at Cognizant
Has good base product functionality of data storage and analytics but there should be an option to use it on the cloud
Pros and Cons
- "The ease of deployment is useful so clients are up and running quickly in comparison to other products."
- "There are some ways that the handling of unstructured data could be improved."
What is our primary use case?
Aster Teradata is mostly being used for doing mapping and I use it for analytics. Usually, there is a support vendor who will use Teradata to do the database analytics. But sometimes with Teradata, the DB administrators use it to get access to the libraries or the data processes.
I mostly recommend Teradata for data storage because it is easy to deploy and implement.
What is most valuable?
The most useful features are the base product functionality of data storage and analytics. The ease of deployment is also useful so clients are implemented quickly.
What needs improvement?
I think that a couple of things can be improved with this product. One is, of course, that there should be an option for using it on the Cloud. A lot of customers ask me how they can get up and running fast, and this would be the fastest way with the least client effort. I know Teradata already has its own Cloud solution, but I think that is one area that needs more maturation and exploration. We need to do more testing before we begin to recommend it to clients and we can do this because we work directly with Teradata. We are using the Cloud solution and it is more scalable and also the costs are fairly elastic. It should be something we are using more with clients in the future.
At an organization level, I think sometimes the support for development is not forthcoming. It should become more of a part of their ongoing process. If they dedicate more resources to developing along with the latest trends in the industry, Teradata could then bring that functionality out for the current customers and maybe attract other customers as well.
I would say that the company should consider more capabilities in handling unstructured data in a better way. Right now most of the latest solutions that are coming to the market address the need for how to take unstructured data and create a standard map for that. I think that would really help. Right now, I only see most of the data through Teradata with its unstructured processing and some of it is not available. They can do more with this. I think Teradata's mappings are good and very easy to use. I would use it for customer databases as it is. But there still some ways that the handling of unstructured data could be improved and that would really help.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been doing technical solutions for data integration for 22 years. We have a relationship with Teradata for 11 years — since 2008. We implement solutions and have a lot of experience with this product.
How are customer service and technical support?
My team has had the opportunity to work with technical support. I think it is fair to rate their services as a three-out-of-five. I think they are somewhat above average.
How was the initial setup?
I think the team has been very happy with the setup of Teradata from the system side.
It is taking about a week for deployment. To sort out the clients' needs on the level of technical reports and the results usually takes about two weeks. That is in addition to creating the data warehouse and loading the data.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The feedback I get from customers is the cost is high for what they get. In many cases, another product — other than Teradata — could be better for our clients cost-wise. This is why we are continuing to explore options to see if there are other, more cost-effective solutions. That is an area of the product from Teradata that they need to evaluate.
What other advice do I have?
Teradata has all the best features currently, but I think right now the market is really flooding with multiple options. Many customers have a need for rapid on-premise deployment. I think in that case I would recommend Teradata. But for smaller or medium-sized companies, there are probably other options out there that they might use instead which will fit better for their budget.
On a scale from one to ten where one is the worst and ten is the best, I would rate Aster Data MapReduce (Teradata) overall as maybe six or seven probably. Seven-out-of-ten.
To improve that rating, I think we see that our customers have a lot of unstructured data. So in addressing that in a better way, Teradata would become an eight. It could possibly resolve this in a simple way with better integration in working directly with other solutions that are already available out there. This may be the best solution for that.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Teradata's stability is good.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Teradata's scalability is one of its best features.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Teradata's licensing is on the expensive side.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate Teradata nine out of ten.

Improves analytics and can be deployed anywhere
Pros and Cons
- "Teradata can be deployed on-premise, on the cloud, or in a virtual machine, which means customers can move without having to create their architecture all over again."
- "Teradata's pricing is quite high compared to Redshift, Synapse, or GCP alternatives."
What is our primary use case?
Primarily, Teradata is a traditional data warehouse, but we also encourage our customers to adapt to the logical data warehouse and data lab.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is the ability to be anywhere - Teradata can be deployed on-premise, on the cloud, or in a virtual machine, which means customers can move without having to create their architecture all over again.
What needs improvement?
Teradata's pricing is quite high compared to Redshift, Synapse, or GCP alternatives. In the next release, I would like Teradata to refine their Object Store to be more compatible with cloud environments.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been working with Teradata since 2014.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Teradata's stability is very strong, and our customers feel their data is safe with it.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Teradata's scalability is good, it takes only the push of a button to scale up, and if that's not enough, you could scale with the cloud or a virtual machine.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is straightforward if you have some knowledge about the logic of the environment. However, for those without knowledge, there will be a learning curve to understand how to use the solution.
What was our ROI?
Our customers say that Teradata makes them faster, smarter, and capable of more sophisticated analytics.
What other advice do I have?
For anyone thinking of implementing Teradata, I would recommend preparing by understanding the technology and putting in the effort to keep it being adaptive to different and urgent requirements from your business. I would give Teradata a score of ten out of ten.

It has several redundancy options, so the system is always up and running
Pros and Cons
- "Teradata features high productivity and reliability because it has several redundancy options, so the system is always up and running."
- "Teradata needs to expand the kind of training that's available to customers. Teradata only offers training directly and doesn't delegate to any third-party companies. As a result, it's harder to find people trained on Teradata in our market relative to Oracle."
What is our primary use case?
Teradata is primarily for data warehousing at large customers, like banks, retailers, and government organizations. However, we don't use Teradata for Russian government organizations because it's a US tool, and the Russian government doesn't allow foreign software.
What is most valuable?
Teradata features high productivity and reliability because it has several redundancy options, so the system is always up and running.
What needs improvement?
Teradata needs to expand the kind of training that's available to customers. Teradata only offers training directly and doesn't delegate to any third-party companies. As a result, it's harder to find people trained on Teradata in our market relative to Oracle.
They should diversify their sales channels and develop more resellers. Teradata could also be more active in marketing because I rarely see any Teradata events in Russia. They've always had several regional conferences for Teradata users, but I hardly ever see marketing events geared toward new customers.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been working with Teradata for 11 years.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
One of Teradata's biggest advantages is that it's fully scalable
How are customer service and support?
We usually don't have any problems with Teradata itself. However, sometimes customers have issues with applications they've written themselves that aren't adequately designed to fully utilize Teradata's capabilities.
How was the initial setup?
I would not say the setup is too complex. Teradata has a direct sales model, so Teradata employees usually set it up with help from the customer because they don't support a big system of resellers or partners. It's pretty easy because they are actively involved in the deployment. But later on, when the customer is expanding the solution and doing many things themselves, they make mistakes, which should be corrected using the support resources of Teradata.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Teradata is expensive, so it's typically marketed to big customers. However, there have been some changes, and Teradata is now offering more flexible pricing models and equipment leasing. They've added pay-as-you-go and cloud models, so it's changing, but Teradata is generally known as an expensive high-end product.
What other advice do I have?
I rate Teradata eight out of 10. Customers need a certain amount of knowledge to correctly use Teradata when running their applications on the platform. They should also keep in mind the requirements for Teradata's features.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Easy to design and performs well, but needs to be more scalable and flexible
Pros and Cons
- "I like this solution's ease of design and the fact that its performance is quite good. It is stable as well."
- "The scalability could be better. The on-premises solution is always more complicated to scale."
What is our primary use case?
We use it as a data warehouse.
What is most valuable?
I like this solution's ease of design and the fact that its performance is quite good. It is stable as well.
What needs improvement?
The scalability could be better. The on-premises solution is always more complicated to scale.
The flexibility could be improved. The product is good if you know what you're planning to do. If you're designing as well, upfront, then it's fine. However, if you've made a mistake in the design work or your system, then it could be quite complex and expensive, and it may not preform well.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using Teradata for around four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Teradata is a stable solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I've worked on the on-premises solution, and it is always more complicated to scale. We currently have hundreds of users.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We used Oracle Database before Teradata.
What other advice do I have?
Teradata is quite a specific tool, so if you have suitable use cases, then I would recommend it. On a scale from one to ten, I would rate this tool at seven.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The solution requires a license.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend this solution to others.
I rate Teradata an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Public Cloud

A great solution for business analytics, cloud products, and consulting
Pros and Cons
- "It's a pre-configured appliance that requires very little in terms of setting-up."
- "It could use some more advanced analytics relating to structured and semi-structured data."
What is our primary use case?
We resell Teradata, but not in the cloud.
Currently, our experience with Teradata in the cloud is theoretical as we haven't started selling it to our customers yet; however, a few of our customers are interested in migrating to a cloud-based solution.
Our clients use Teradata to consolidate corporate data to provide reports. These reports are required every day — it's more like described analytics.
What is most valuable?
Our customers are very happy with the configuration. It's a pre-configured appliance that requires very little in terms of setting-up.
What needs improvement?
It could use some more advanced analytics relating to structured and semi-structured data. In other words, there should be a process that makes advanced analytics easier.
The integration capabilities could be improved.
They should improve their marketing to make it easier to sell to customers.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Teradata for roughly five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Stability-wise, I don't recall any of our customers having a problem with Teradata. They have never mentioned any issues relating to bugs or glitches.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
There are a few options that are very interesting related to the cloud. You can go into the same environment and add more nodes throughout it. As I mentioned, we don't have much experience with Teradata on the cloud, but I think it's the way of the future.
How are customer service and technical support?
Their technical support is great. On a scale from one to ten, I would give them a rating of ten.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is very easy.
Deployment takes a couple of weeks.
What other advice do I have?
I would definitely recommend Teradata to other interested companies. It's really easy to use thanks to the simple configuration.
Overall, on a scale from one to ten, I would give Teradata a rating of ten.
