RHEV Valuable Features

In my opinion, the best features of RHEV are that it is a real hypervisor and it is free, so it performs better than VMware.

I have used the live migration feature in the past with RHEV. There is a free clone of it that is based on the open source. Live migration is a nifty feature if your app is not highly available and you need to do maintenance on a machine. You can migrate the VM off of it, do your maintenance, and move it back when you are done.

RHEV has a high availability architecture with a built-in monitoring feature where you could see machines other than the one you are operating on. I tend to implement high availability not so much in RHEV, but by using standard application high availability strategies. Red Hat has another product specifically for high availability.

We've gotten used to using Red Hat products for a long time, and the main advantage of using the same product and standardization brings some efficiency, along with cost optimization in our software and hardware environments, especially after VMware was acquired by Broadcom, which affected customers such as us. However, we haven't changed the pricing structure or lost any money against other things, so our systems are optimized, and we can say that we saved a lot of money.

The biggest aspect for me is the disk usage, the virtual manager, and the deployment of machines. It has significantly improved in recent years. It used to be specialized, but now it is very similar to VMware.

It's just easy to use. You could do all of the core product features that you could do with VMware. You can move a VM from one machine to the other, and you have all the same disk options, like thin versus thick provisioning and the ability to emulate different processor types... the management's kind of the same. It's just the third-party support that's better for Microsoft and VMware. That's the biggest difference.

The product has a good price. The major difference between RHEV and VMware is the price. RHEV’s cost is much less compared to VMware.

The most valuable features of RHEV are all the tools, such as virtualization, management of cloud platforms, and integration of container environments. The solution has good compatibility between virtualization, content management, and cloud management. Having the full set of these tools is the advantage of it.

It is preferred to have everything from the same vendor. This solution is one of the best and it includes automation and supports many virtualization layers. I prefer to propose this solution to customers unless they have a specific choice.

Many of our customers are moving to open source-based technology and VMware is leading the virtualization space, but slowly customers are moving to open source and Red Hat is the leader in this particular space. I think customers feel more confident running Red Hat Virtualization than VMware. And if you talk about a lot of other features that VMware provides, Red Hat does that too. I mean, it's not only Red Hat, I would say, Oracle and Red Hat, both of them are providing good capabilities. I think customers like this.

In terms of cost, VMware is really expensive for many of the customers, so that is another reason why they want to switch to these technologies.

To be clear, for us to use Red Hat, we need an OpenStack platform. Red Hat OpenStack is a Red Hat platform based on OpenStack to make a public cloud platform. Regarding the features we find valuable, we use all the stack on this platform including the network, storage, compute and controller management and they all work well.

There aren't any bugs on the solution.

The valuable features of this solution are that it's open source, non-proprietary, and we can do just about anything we want to with the codes. There are no legal issues stopping us and of course Red Hat is rock solid and very stable.

The most valuable feature in this product is that it is easy for us to deal with when comes to application migration and its compatibility with the multiple component applications that are available. For example, we have Drupal, Magento, Node.js, and other applications to host. So when we are looking for a base system solution that is able to support all of these components, I look to Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization. It provides a lot of flexibility in terms of compute scaling, resource allocation, and also the stability of the platform.

Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization is giving us more benefits in these situations because it is stable. This makes it easy to do this migration and easy to manage as well.

RHEV costs are very low compared to other Virtualization products. RHEV hypervisor supports up to 160 cores and up to 2 TB of RAM on a host machine. Performance and security are key advantages of RHEV. One of the new features are transparent huge pages, where kernel dynamically creates large memory pages for virtual machines, which improves performance for most workloads by reducing the number of times that memory is accessed. It is open source, which means that it is available for use by every one. There is a “Power user portal” feature that helps developer and IT staff with a self-service interface that allows them to provision virtual machines, define templates, and be an administrator to their own environment.
