The initial setup was complex as we had 12 nodes, and every storage was between one cluster.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, I rate Nutanix Unified Storage a ten out of ten.

Easier to scale a node than with traditional storage
Pros and Cons
- "The reliability and availability are the most valuable features. Reliability is important because it can run my workloads. I need to be able to take advantage of the VMs that are executing on the storage. It has to be reliable. It's also important to have the storage available for scaling VMs on demand."
- "We have had to deal with some infrastructure and general cluster issues but these issues don't impact storage."
What is our primary use case?
Our primary use case is for running an EMR through Citrix.
What is most valuable?
The reliability and availability are the most valuable features. Reliability is important because it can run my workloads. I need to be able to take advantage of the VMs that are executing on the storage. It has to be reliable. It's also important to have the storage available for scaling VMs on demand.
We size them accordingly but there's unexpected demand. It's much easier to scale a Nutanix node. Traditional storage doesn't scale so well but Nutanix aggregates it all into one single layer.
A lot of times we use Golden Images through Citrix and the ability to make those Golden Images available through that entire storage stack is important to us.
In terms of its ability to remove silos in our company storage, we still need traditional storage but NUS provides availability and single unification. You can scale much more easily versus traditional storage.
I think Nutanix does a very good job with unified storage and they continue to innovate. As they innovate it, there are new features that you can take advantage of. There was something called Shadow Clones that didn't exist with other storages. This feature is relevant for me with what I do with Citrix using the Shadow Clones. It accelerates and makes things more efficient for me.
What needs improvement?
We don't have issues with the storage. We have had to deal with some infrastructure and general cluster issues but these issues don't impact storage.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Nutanix Unified Storage for seven years.
How are customer service and support?
Their support is excellent. They are still engaged even when something isn't their problem. That's one of the biggest asks from a support perspective. I would rate them a ten out of ten.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
What other advice do I have?
I would rate Nutanix Unified Storage a ten out of ten. We haven't had any problems with them.

The solution should increase its storage capabilities, as it has been required to make use of local data storage and local pockets and magnets.
Also, I have had difficulty with Nutanix Files and with understanding Nutanix AOS.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been dealing with Nutanix Files since it was made available to new customers, for around two years.

Good management interface and reporting, helped us to consolidate our various file shares
Pros and Cons
- "The management interface is great and you have handy access to several details about your file shares."
- "Now, we have much more control over our File Share environment, it is much easier to manage, and we've reduced the IT infrastructure footprint by 70%."
- "The only thing I would say is missing for us it is FTP protocol compatibility."
- "The only thing I would say is missing for us is FTP protocol compatibility."
What is our primary use case?
Our file share infrastructure was all messed up with several different solutions in place such as; Windows file servers, Hitachi NAS devices, Linux NFS repositories, and DFS. We were looking for a solution to replace and consolidate all our file share repositories in one single place and the Nutanix Files was the chosen solution.
We are very happy with it, as we were able to migrate hundreds of Windows file shares, Linux NFS, and the files seating on the Hitachi NAS to Nutanix with almost zero impact.
How has it helped my organization?
It is very fast, reliable, scalable, stable and It comes with very nice features, such as; built-in HA, analysis reporting, audit reports, DR replication, one-click upgrade, and some other cool features.
Now, we have much more control over our File Share environment. It is much easier to manage, and we've reduced the IT infrastructure footprint by 70%.
The built-in file analysis feature is also helping us a lot on the audit requests, as we can generate several different reports right away.
What is most valuable?
We were able to increase the file share environment's overall performance and availability.
The HA feature (minimum of three instances), as well as the replication to another site using Nutanix Protection Domain (LEAP), is also a great addition to it.
The management interface is great and you have handy access to several details about your file shares. We didn't have any of that in our old file share environment.
What needs improvement?
The only thing I would say is missing for us it is FTP protocol compatibility. We still have some systems that use FTP to send and receive files, and we are missing that feature. The solution would be perfect for us with the FTP support, as we also have a lot of legacy FTP solutions in place spread across several different servers and platforms.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using Nutanix Files for more than one year.
How was the initial setup?
The migration process was really smooth with minimal outage and disruption.
What other advice do I have?
In summary, we have been using Nutanix Files for more than one year and we are very happy with it.
We hope Nutanix can add the FTP protocol to the Nutanix Files so we can also leverage all of the great AOS capabilities in the FTP environment, as well.

Improves database performance, integrates well with other products, and has good technical support
Pros and Cons
- "They have well-documented best practices and the interface is good."
- "Overall, it's a good product."
- "The escalation process with technical support could do with some improvement."
- "As you have to go through all of the steps of technical support, it takes longer to get to an escalated level."
What is our primary use case?
Our clients use this solution to achieve better database performance. It allows the system to run quicker and to be more responsive.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable features are the performance and the integration with other products, such as Oracle.
They have well-documented best practices and the interface is good.
What needs improvement?
As you have to go through all of the steps of technical support, it takes longer to get to an escalated level. The escalation process with technical support could do with some improvement.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been familiar with Nutanix Volumes for one year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
This solution is very stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It's somewhat scalable depending on the circumstances.
If you are trying to scale it to resolve an issue because of the original sizing, that can be a bit more complex. When everything is sized correctly and you are scaling it to add more capacity, then it's quite easy.
How are customer service and technical support?
For most of the issues, technical support is pretty good. For the more complex and ongoing escalated issues, it can be slow to resolve.
They are good but it can drag on a bit.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is quite easy.
Deployment usually takes less than a week. If you take into account testing phases and migration then it takes a few days.
What other advice do I have?
I am a solutions architect and I work for a reseller who implements products for customers. I do a lot of work in backup and recovery. I sell these solutions or I put together a solution architecture for each project.
Overall, it's a good product. The hyper-converged is good, as long as it is sized correctly to fit your workload. Most of the challenges I see with Nutanix are due to the wrong architecture. It needs to be correctly sized. If it is not properly sized then you get poor performance.
I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Public Cloud

For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using Nutanix Files for six months.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Nutanix Files is flexible in terms of being able to scale it. If you are scaling out then you have to expand your file server, but it is an easy process.
We have approximately 300 people who are using data on the Nutanix Files server.
How are customer service and technical support?
I am generally satisfied with the technical support. However, one thing that needs to be improved is that you have to go through the hardware vendor for support in some circumstances.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is a little bit complex. You need to set up your management server, and you also have to do some virtualization. Windows File Server is easier to configure, where you can set it up all at once.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, this is a good product and I recommend it.
I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.
