Fivetran Valuable Features

Mediha Šiljić - PeerSpot reviewer
Lead Data Engineer at Sensilab
The most valuable feature of Fivetran is its built-in connectors for a wide range of data sources. This covers about ninety-five percent of our needs. It also includes monitoring features which are essential for managing data connections from a couple of dozen different data sources through one tool. We don't need to worry about upgrades as Fivetran manages them. It's crucial for us to have everything managed through one tool. View full review »

The ability to seamlessly integrate with a large variety of data sources is valuable. Fivetran is an easy-to-deploy solution for organizations looking at integrating a wide variety of data sources. We used Fivetran as a proof of concept and found it very stable during the short duration of our use. View full review »

The ease of setting up the connectors and transformations is highly valuable. We used the SaaS version of Fivetran to connect to Dynamics 365, and it was great and easy, although we couldn't filter data on it.

The user interface is mostly UI-based, eliminating the need for a lot of coding. Furthermore, Fivetran offers scheduled pipeline extraction up to twelve times in a day.

Fivetran offers native connectivity with Sybase, which is highly valuable. The solution also allows real-time syncing and especially between Sybase and Snowflake, which is the solution's use case in our organization. Fivetran provides seamless integration without any data loss, and data changes are reflected in real time. Due to the change data capture capability, Fivetran allows the seamless data flow from one way to another.

The Fivetran features I have found the most valuable are the managed pipelines themselves. It is very valuable for us to be able to set up a connection to a business application and have that pipeline managed by Fivetran and synced to our data warehouse. The Fivetran logs, which allow me to see if there's anything happening in the pipelines that I need to be concerned about or why a connector is not connecting, for example.

We also use Fivetran data libraries. They have an integration with another tool called DBT, which allows us to run code in DBT that automatically transforms our raw Fivetran data into useful tables and views. Fivetran data library packages have been very useful for us.

It is extremely easy to add a new integration and connect it with a destination in a very short period of time. This is particularly useful for multiple servers or databases.

The portal is very intuitive and easy to use. New users can easily navigate, complete setups, and troubleshoot.

There's the general feature of the platform where it just makes it very easy to integrate different things, but I would say a specific difference is their integration of DBT, being able to have the transformation components be driven by Fivetran.

The general data ingestion is valuable. It's used for a lot of data. It provides about 90% of the data we use in our data warehouse without needing data engineering.

The most valuable feature of Fivetran is that it only synchronizes what needs to be synchronized. You need to capture the in-source updates and digits from the source; this is the only information you want. You don't want to download the whole thing each time. Fivetran does this just beautifully.

The simplicity and scalability are the strongest features of Fivetran. The learning curve is not steep, making it easy to get accustomed to. It's transparent in understanding when something fails, and the logging is detailed, which helps in auditing and accessing information rapidly.

For scalability, Fivetran charges less per row the more you use it, allowing you to move more data economically as you set up additional data pipelines.

There's a very good layer that allows you to connect different data sources and establish a very good ETL workflow. You can manage all of your connectors individually, which gives you a very good ability to trace which one of your ETL processes is running and when. The solution also allows you to schedule each of those runs with different cadences, depending on which plan you are on. At the same time, for those runs, you have the ability to hash, unhash, or map any data that might be sensitive or personally identifiable, and that's pretty robust. It's a feature in the standard plan, so you don't need the enterprise plan for that. One very powerful and cool feature is how you can integrate the solution with other transformation tools, such as dbt, or run the transformations within Fivetran itself to create a transformation layer on top of your ETL layer. That allows you to manage the entire ETL workflow end to end from within the platform without the need for any additional tool.

When it comes to managing ETL pipelines, these features are valuable.

The ease of usability is the most valuable feature. It's very easy and quick to set up. It also has a central hub as opposed to GoldenGate which is one direct interface. For GoldenGate I would have needed three interfaces whereas with HVR I have a central interface that manages everything.
