We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It is easy to use. We chose this product for the possibility to have virtual domains (VDOMs). We are building another company in the group, and we would like to split the firewalling rules and policies between these two companies. Each company would be able to manage its own policies and security rules, which is an advantage of Fortinet FortiGate. We can define VDOMs, and every company can manage its own VDOM as if it has its own physical firewall, but in fact, we would be using the same physical appliance because we are also using the same internet lines. So, it allows us to reuse the existing resources without the disadvantage of having to compromise on policies and security. Each company can choose its own way of working.""It's very fast and easy to configure.""It is easy to manage, and it doesn't need much knowledge from the team. It is a stable device, and there are many features that are included out of the box.""Fortigate's most valuable feature is that it doesn't need a push policy when writing rules.""The initial setup is straightforward.""The security features that they have are quite good. On top of that, their licensing model is quite nice where they don't charge you anything for the SD-WAN functionality for the firewall.""The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate are it is one of the most mature firewalls in the UTM bundle.""Virtual Domains (VDOMs) are a feature that we found valuable."

"The product offers fairly good centralized administration and monitoring with decent capabilities that allow the administrator to have relevent control over devices.""VPN clients are easy to use and deploy.""Its most outstanding feature is content filtering.""Technical support has been good."

More Check Point VPN-1 [EOL] Pros →

"It is stable and quite protective. It has a lot of features to scan a lot of malicious things and vulnerabilities.""We wanted to cross-reference that activity with the network traffic just to be sure there was no lateral movement. With Trellix, we easily confirmed that there was no lateral network involvement and that nothing else was infected. It helped us correlate the events and feel confident in our containment.""If we are receiving spam emails, or other types of malicious email coming from a particular email ID, then we are able to block them using this solution.""Improved our systems and our customers' by providing better malware protection, defense against zero-day threats, and improved network security.""The server appliance is good.""It allows us to be more hands off in checking on emails and networking traffic. We can set up a bunch of different alerts and have it alert us.""The sandbox feature of FireEye Network Security is very good. The operating system itself has many features and it supports our design.""We see ROI in the sense that we don't have to react because it stops anything from hurting the network. We can stop it before we have a bigger mess to clean up."

Cons
"I would like to see improvements in the support from Fortinet. Here in the Philippines, whenever we have problems with a Fortinet product, we mostly ask for support from distributors and resellers and not directly from Fortinet.""This product needs to have an analysis feature, rather than having the analysis done through the integration of a different product.""The solution could be more evenly structured.""Some features of Fortinet FortiGate are actually fee enabled that are inconvenient for deploying in production. Other issues relate to isolation with Cisco products and your server.""Stability and technical support are the two major issues I have found with Fortinet.""It should come integrated or have its own type of network monitor tool in a module. There should just be one package, and you are good to go.""Performance and technical support are the main issues with this solution.""You do need some IT knowledge in order to effectively work with the solution."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"Every time we made a change, the policy took about three minutes to apply, and obviously, when there were emergency changes or changes that we needed that were escalated, they were not modified very, very quickly.""It should have excellent integration with the other security tools.""Pricing is sometimes challenging, although it brings a lot of features.""The reporting from the file or reporting from mobile access needs improvement. The solution, in general, could use better reporting tools."

More Check Point VPN-1 [EOL] Cons →

"Stability issues manifested in terms of throughput maximization.""Based on what we deployed, they should emphasize the application filtering and the web center. We need to look deeper into the SSM inspection. If we get the full solution with that module, we don't need to get the SSM database from another supplier.""They can maybe consider supporting some compliance standards. When we are configuring rules and policies, it can guide whether they are compliant with a particular compliance authority. In addition, if I have configured some rules that have not been used, it should give a report saying that these rules have not been used in the last three months or six months so that I disable or delete those rules.""FireEye Network Security should have better integration with other vendors' firewalls or proxies, such as Palo Alto and Fortinet. Files that are being submitted should happen through the API or automatically.""Cybersecurity posture has room for improvement.""The product's integration capabilities are an area of concern where improvements are required.""Management of the appliance could be greatly improved.""It is not a very secure product."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."

  • "There are some additional services that I understand the vendor provides, but our approach was to package all of the features that we were looking to use into the product."
  • "We're partners with Cisco so we get a reasonable price. It's cheaper than Palo Alto in terms of licensing."
  • "FireEye is comparable to other products, such as HX, but seems expensive. It may cause us to look at other products in the market."
  • "When I compare this solution to its competitors in the market, I find that it is a little expensive."
  • "The user fee is not as high but the maintenance fee is expensive."
