Helps you to do simple network functions like packet distribution
Pros and Cons
  • "It's scalable. It is cloud-based controlled. We don't need to buy a dedicated controller. It allows me to control all of my access points everywhere in all my companies."
  • "The problem with installation is not the installation process, but the building. Sometimes our building has a high ceiling, so installation is hard."

What is our primary use case?

The solution helps me do simple network functions, like packet distribution. The problem in my office is only the distribution network. We use many access points.

The version I'm using is LDS 24 or LDS 26.

The solution is deployed on-premise.

My company is a health campus, polytechnic. We have a staff of 400 people, and there are 3,000 students.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Linksys since 2010.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The Linksys access point is what we use the most in my office. We have used 2000, from the N type to AC type. Last week, we installed the 2600 type packed AC. It's a good solution for our office.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's scalable. It is cloud-based controlled. We don't need to buy a dedicated controller. It allows me to control all of my access points everywhere in all my companies. It's easy to connect.

How are customer service and support?

I have contact with my Linksys distributor partner in Indonesia. I often ask him about the Linksys product and how to solve problems.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I used 3Com, which is now by HP.

How was the initial setup?

Installation is very easy. We just pull the cable and then install the POA adapter. The access point is in the location, and we just enter the serial number and make the address in the cloud access in the black list, and we can control it everywhere.

The problem with installation is not the installation process, but the building. Sometimes our building has a high ceiling, so installation is hard. If we install in the high ceiling, we must provide a scaffolding for installation and it takes quite a long time.

We used the technician and admin for deployment and installation.

What about the implementation team?

I planned the deployment, and we just paid for the technician to install the cable, and we control the process. It's not very hard. It's not necessary to use an integrator.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

You don't need to pay yearly or monthly for this solution.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution 9 out of 10.

I recommend this solution.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Offer simplified network management and scalability
Pros and Cons
  • "In a previous use case, we deployed Linksys Switches for blocking unwanted signals within a premises with the help of their clean air technology. This was one of the notable advantages of Linksys Switches over Cisco."
  • "The additional features which I would like to suggest is to implement user friendly GUI for easier network management."

What is our primary use case?

I have used it with multiple clients. I have used Linksys Switches for Ethernet in Hotel Regency located in Pakistan, which utilises Linksys switches across its three floors and approximately twenty rooms and Ramada Portal, a four-star hotel, which also employs Cisco switches.
The Linksys Switches offer simplified network management and scalability. These switches can be easily managed with basic networking knowledge without requiring CCNA level expertise for Cisco.

What is most valuable?

In a previous use case, we deployed Linksys Switches for blocking unwanted signals within a premises with the help of their clean air technology. This was one of the notable advantages of Linksys Switches over Cisco. For SMBs, Cisco and D-Link are a better option. In terms of enterprise-level companies, Cisco is preferred due to its optimisation quality during high traffic. There are many valuable features of Linksys Switches which include speed support and manageability. This makes them comparative with local brands and also much secure due to its security features. In terms of reliability and time, Cisco still ranks higher than its' competitors.

What needs improvement?

The additional features which I would like to suggest is to implement the user friendly GUI for easier network management. It should also have the functions of automating the firmware upgrade process, thus eliminating the need for technical expertise. Apart from this, I cannot pinpoint any other features that I am missing in the current model.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Cisco Linksys Ethernet Switches for the past 3 to 4 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

For the price that we pay, it is a stable solution in terms of performance.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution.

How are customer service and support?

We are offering the support ourselves because we have engineers at different levels for handling various tasks. Level 1 engineer handles simple installations and configurations on site. Level 2 engineers manage more complex setups. Level 3 engineers work on the issues involving routers, VLANs, and terminals. The support also depends on the client's needs. Enterprise level plans might need configuration assistance. We also arrange for parts locally, as well as through import whenever there is a need for one.

How was the initial setup?

The setup process or configuring access points include two types of devices. One of them is a wireless LAN controller, and the other is a stand alone device. Setting up an access point with WLC is simpler because the controller handles the configurations. On the other hand, standalone devices require more manual configuration.

What about the implementation team?

What other advice do I have?

It's our recommendation that training be provided by D-Link for engineers interested in deploying Linksys switches or routers. As for the overall rating, I would rate Cisco Linksys Ethernet switches a 9 out of 10.

  • "We encounter a challenge in automating the product to reduce manual work."

What is most valuable?

I am impressed with the tool's features like routing, Layer 2 security, and port security.

What needs improvement?

We encounter a challenge in automating the product to reduce manual work.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with the tool for twenty years.

How are customer service and support?

Compared to Huawei, Cisco's support is good.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate the product a nine out of ten.

Easy to use and reliable, but they lack the management capabilities needed for enterprise-class switches
Pros and Cons
  • "Linksys switches are easy to use. You can pull the switch out of the box, plug it in, and it's going to work."
  • "I would like to see more manageability. That's primarily the reason why Linksys switches don't work in the enterprise space. They don't have the management and capabilities of other switches."

What is our primary use case?

Linksys switches are usually at the edge. People usually go with other switches for the core, but this is the switch that all the desktops connect to. It's primarily used in small offices. Once you're in a position where you really need a ton of bandwidth, companies tend to move away from Linksys to Cisco, Brocade, or another enterprise switch.  Most of the companies that use Linksys have fewer than 200 or 300 users.

What is most valuable?

Linksys switches are easy to use. You can pull the switch out of the box, plug it in, and it's going to work.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see more manageability. That's primarily the reason why Linksys switches don't work in the enterprise space. They don't have the management and capabilities of other switches.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Linksys Ethernet switches for 10-15 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I haven't seen issues with them. On occasion, they'll have a bad port come up, but that's just about any switch.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I don't consider them to be scalable. As far as I know, they don't talk to each other at all. You can't put three of them together as a stack and then work off that.

How was the initial setup?

It's straightforward to set up and maintain Linksys switches. One network engineer is enough to handle it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Linksys switches are at the low end of the price range, but that's partly because of where they fit in the whole scheme of things. They're definitely a lower-price option.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Cisco Linksys ethernet switches five out of 10. They're not very feature-rich, but they have sufficient features for the market segment they occupy. Don't expect a ton out of them. They're good for what they're designed for, but if you try to stretch them, they're just not going to perform the way you want.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Easy to set up with excellent support and good reliability
Pros and Cons
  • "They have so many series that can cater to SMBs, banks, or telcos. They have a wide range of options."
  • "Their price is quite high compared to their competitors."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution as a switch.

What is most valuable?

Ciscos Switches are one of the best switches in the industry.

Big players are using the product, including banks and companies in the financial sector.

Cisco is ubiquitous. It's used everywhere.

They have many product lines. They have so many series that can cater to SMBs, banks, or telcos. They have a wide range of options.

The setup is simple and straightforward.

Techical support is helpful.

The stability has been good.

What needs improvement?

Their price is quite high compared to their competitors. This should be less.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for more than 15 years, or maybe for as much as 20 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution has been quite stable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable. Both hardware and software wise it's stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The product is scalable. They have a wide range of product lines for small to medium enterprises to banks. They cover every area. For every customer, they have a solution.

We have 70 or more companies using the solution right now.

We do have plans to increase usage at this point.

How are customer service and support?

Support is very good. They offer very helpful assistance.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I'm also aware of Juniper Switches and Brocade solutions. People are also beginning to use Huawei products. Huawei is much cheaper in terms of routing and switching.

How was the initial setup?

It's a simple setup. Cisco is simple plug-and-play. Starting is easy. If you don't want any complexity, then you can simply opt for plug and play.

If you want more complexity or more security, that's still quite simple. They have spent so much time and expertise in education. Cisco education is everywhere. It makes it so that people are aware of Cisco Control and Cisco Command Line. Many users feel comfortable with it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of Cisco options is quite high.

What other advice do I have?

I'm not sure which version of the solution I'm using. It might be version 10 or 11.

I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.

Great interface, helpful support, and easy to use
Pros and Cons
  • "It's stable and we never have to worry about it."
  • "The pricing can be a bit unstable."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution as switches. We use it across the justice system in our country. They are in lots of buildings.

We are using it for networking for WAN network connections.

How has it helped my organization?

The stability has come in handy for us. If you compare it to Huawei or HPE, it's more reliable.

We are using the ICE integration with Cisco and that's it.

What is most valuable?

It's great for networking.

We are using protocols like OSPF.

It works very well.

We are using the common features and it works well for us.

It's stable and we never have to worry about it.

The setup is straightforward.

The product is scalable.

What needs improvement?

We aren't lacking any features.

The pricing can be a bit unstable. It's dependent on the account manager. They should offer reasonable standard pricing. We need to go through local vendors and everything varies far too much.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using the solution for 20 years now. It's been a very long time.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We've never had issues with stability. The switches are always stable and reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have nearly 2,000 switches. Right now, we have 10,000 users.

It's quite scalable. The product is not limited in any way.

How are customer service and support?

We have Smart Net support. If anything comes up, we open a ticket with Cisco and they assist. They will replace the hardware within a week or two typically.

They are all qualified CCIE and are quite knowledgeable.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used to use Huawei switches many years ago. We also used HPE. We are purely using Cisco now. Cisco has better support and the switches are easier to use. The Command Line is different and simple.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very straightforward. It's not difficult at all.

It is easy to maintain everything.

What about the implementation team?

We handle the setups in-house.

What was our ROI?

We've noted an ROI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is okay.

Depending on the account manager, whether he gives a discount or not will determine the price. Sometimes they give you a 70% discount and sometimes there's no discount. The price is not stable.

Comparatively, the pricing is pretty good.

What other advice do I have?

We are an end user.

Every year, we are changing the product and tend to use the latest versions. Right now, we are using 93 on many. We may use different switch versions.

We'd recommend the product. It's stable and has a good interface.

I'd rate the solution ten out of ten.
