Easy to set up, scalable, and offers great security
Pros and Cons
  • "What gives me the most value is undoubtedly the security that the anti-bot and anti-virus blades provide."
  • "With my Next-Generation Firewall, I have managed to reduce the cost of my links since now we use them appropriately in the resources and tasks that are necessary."
  • "Of the areas of improvement that I want to see in this product, without a doubt, one is the technical support. In this time of globalization, with so many cyberattacks and risks, the Check Point support staff take a long time to attend to incidents due to the high demand."

What is our primary use case?

My solution is based on an on-site architecture. I currently manage a Check Point Next-Generation Firewall for my more than 400 sites such as perimeter and DMZ. For the sites with a perimeter to the internet, I have them in a high availability scheme with balancing internet services. In the case of DMZ, they allow me to control incoming and outgoing traffic through policies based on Identity awareness. I use the application control blade to allow RDP access to the specific servers needed by administrators.

How has it helped my organization?

In the beginning, my organization did not have a security scheme, which caused a latent security risk. My internet services were never enough due to the high traffic used towards social networks and entertainment sites. With my Next-Generation Firewall, I have managed to reduce the cost of my links since now we use them appropriately in the resources and tasks that are necessary.

For the lateral movements, previously all of my users had access to server networks and communication could cause lateral movement of viruses and ransomware. Now, I have the perimeter towards the internet protected and I am protected against unauthorized access.

What is most valuable?

What gives me the most value is undoubtedly the security that the anti-bot and anti-virus blades provide. With the automatic updates of signatures, I am always protected against new threats. The identity awareness blade helps me to have better control and organization over unauthorized access of my users onto exclusion sites such as social networks. In the DMZ it allows me to control administrators with access to highly important networks such as servers, developments, etc.

What needs improvement?

Of the areas of improvement that I want to see in this product, without a doubt, one is the technical support. In this time of globalization, with so many cyberattacks and risks, the Check Point support staff take a long time to attend to incidents due to the high demand.

Another change that I would like to see is the ability to be able to test the policies before launching a change. It is somewhat annoying to apply a change and then notice that, after a while, the message appears that the installation of policies has failed, either due to some duplicate rule, some duplicate port, duplicate service or IP, et cetera.

Good pricing, straightforward to set up, and offers a very good distributed deployment
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution can scale."
  • "We would like to see constant improvement in anti-malware functionality and anti-threat protection."

What is our primary use case?

In our organization, we are using distributed device management. Here, management and distributed devices are separate deployments. Therefore, our management is very easy in our organization for traffic management. Here, tier architectures are used. That smart console, smart getaway, and management are different devices. Each device is connected to the other.

Threat prevention is used as well. Basically, threat prevention is used for preventative management traffic entering into our internal organization. The hash value is used whether traffic is legitimate or not for distributed traffic.

We are using Check Point for URL filtering.

How has it helped my organization?

In our organization, we are using policy configurations where various policies are configured for internal to outside organization communication, and our DM's are there too. Various zones are created in our organization.

For each particular zone, if I want to communicate with the external zone, then I need to create a policy for internal to external. Various rules can be created, particularly for organization communication outside the organization. It will be configured in our organization and four gateways are there allowing for our four different locations to communicate.

In our HR deployment, hiring deployment, there is a new and legacy mode that we are currently using.

What is most valuable?

The distributed deployment is very helpful. This way, the burden on each device is less and management is very easy and CPU process utilization will be not high on a particular device - it'll be distributed on each device. Management is very easy.

We like that it is a next-generation firewall where hackers would need to inspect down to a seventh layer, an application layer, and that offers us better protection.

The initial setup was straightforward.

The solution can scale.

What needs improvement?

We would like to see constant improvement in anti-malware functionality and anti-threat protection.

Various functions affect our organization's traffic performance.

They need more focus on the stability of IP security.

For how long have I used the solution?

The organization has used the solution for five years, however, I only joined the company two years ago.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It provides very good stability for traffic management and network flow. We monitor various locks that will be there for internal and external traffic. I'd like, however, more stability of IP security, more of that is needed. Sometimes there is an issue in IP security clarity.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scale is currently very good. In our organization around 3000 or more employees use it. There is two IT personnel that will configure 30 Check Points, 13,500 gateways will be there and it will handle around 3000 plus employees.

We will increase usage. Currently, one new branch will be open. They are also migrating from Fortinet to Check Point's firewall. The previous they did 40 deployments here, however, currently they're migrating to the Check Point next-generation firewall.

How are customer service and support?

Tech support is very good. After logging the call, if there is an issue discovered, they are very supportive. They are helpful and responsive. We've very happy with them.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used to use Fortinet, however, it did not go deep enough and check down to layer seven.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. That said, I wasn't part of the initial setup, as it was set up before I came to work with the organization.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I'm comfortable with the licensing. The pricing, for what you get, is pretty reasonable.

What other advice do I have?

I'm an end-user of the product. I don't have a specific business relationship with the company.

I'd rate the solution at a ten out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Allows us to view logs of all traffic crossing the various areas
Pros and Cons
  • "We like the way it protects our network, how easy it is to see and filter logs, and how easy it is to manage next-generation firewall policies."
  • "The upgrade process for Check Point NGFW is not very simple, making it difficult to find the resources needed for the upgrade compared to competitors like Fortinet."

What is our primary use case?

We utilize the Check Point NGFW to segregate our environment, separating our network to filter traffic between segments. Additionally, we leverage its features such as IPS, antivirus, and more, making it the foundation for all the Check Point features we use.

How has it helped my organization?

Check Point enables us to secure all our networks by segregating the different areas of our network. It also allows us to view logs of all traffic crossing the various areas. Through the firewall, we can access logs and evidence of activity between our areas, whether within or from the data center to the Internet.

What is most valuable?

We like the way it protects our network, how easy it is to see and filter logs, and how easy it is to manage next-generation firewall policies.

What needs improvement?

The upgrade process for Check Point NGFW is not very simple, making it difficult to find the resources needed for the upgrade compared to competitors like Fortinet. Fortinet makes the upgrade process much more manageable.

Check Point should start working on a new, more straightforward process. Perhaps a graphical interface where you can just click to initiate the upgrade, and it will automatically replace the nodes, starting with the secondary node in a cluster and then upgrading the primary node. This would make the process automatic with just one quick action, similar to what we see in competitors like Fortinet.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Check Point NGFW for ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We're encountering some issues with the Check Point NGFW. They've stopped communicating with the manager, and sometimes, we cannot push policies from the manager to the FortiGate and Check Point. The latest versions we've been working with, especially the Check Point software, haven't been very stable.

I rate the solution's stability a seven out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There are performance issues with certain Check Point NGFW models, particularly when enabling multiple features. These issues are often related to CPU utilization, causing some traffic to slow down. Competitors like Fortinet offer greater scalability than Check Point. In equivalent models, Fortinet performs better with lower CPU usage for the same amount of traffic. However, it's worth noting that Check Point excels in traffic inspection and detecting malicious activities.

While Fortinet may offer better performance, Check Point provides superior security capabilities. Check Point's scalability is not as efficient, as it consumes more CPU when handling higher traffic volumes. Therefore, if speed is a priority, Fortinet may be a better option, but for comprehensive traffic inspection and security, Check Point remains a strong choice despite its scalability limitations.

I rate the solution's scalability an eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

The support engineers sometimes lack sufficient knowledge, making it very difficult to receive a prompt response to our problems. Sometimes, we need ten remote sessions with them before they assign someone capable of resolving the issue. They start escalating only after we complain to the managers. When we open a case, we are assigned a junior staff member who requests information, resulting in lengthy delays in communication.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

The initial step is much more complex than other methods. The integration process will be a bit simpler. It takes two days. You need to start by configuring the management IPs, then proceed to establish the connection to the manager using what they call the sync password. Finally, you need to start creating the policy that you want to use.

I rate the initial setup a seven out of ten, where one is difficult, and ten is easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is expensive compared to Fortinet.

What other advice do I have?

AI is more commonly utilized on the vendor rather than the client side. Therefore, they employ AI to enhance their product and understand and detect more threats that require attention, albeit with a turnaround time.

One should opt for Check Point if they have engineers or partners with expertise in Check Point because it's not the easiest product to work with. It's much simpler for someone who has never worked with Check Point or Fortinet to start with Fortinet, which is much easier to manage. However, if you possess the knowledge of the security blades in Check Point, they are superior to those in Fortinet, with the IPA.

Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

Offers real-time zero-day protection along with excellent architecture
Pros and Cons
  • "The architecture of the solution is extraordinary"
  • "The user interface should be user-friendly"

What is our primary use case?

The product is an excellent perimeter firewall solution. But compared to Palo Alto, the management console is critical. It's difficult to let customers understand the dashboard of the firewall because there are three distinct dashboards. The three dashboards include smart connect, Check Point Firewall dashboard and more.

The solution is used by our organization for security purposes across small and medium banks in our country, who happen to be customers of our company.

What is most valuable?

The architecture of the solution is extraordinary because when a Check Point Firewall protects a customer or organization, a DDoS attack can hardly occur. Another valuable feature is the real-time zero-day protection.

What needs improvement?

The user interface needs to improve and should be user-friendly. The customer of this solution also needs to undergo training to use the solution dashboards, unlike products like Palo Alto.

In the next release, Check Point can try to add the DDoS or web application firewall within the overall firewall. If Check Point is able to implement the aforementioned integration within the firewall module, then people don't need to buy each firewall separately. The comprehensive firewall addition will increase the sales volume of any next generation firewall because TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) will be low.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Check Point NGFW for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

If you have the Maestro version, scalability is the best among all competitors. For large organizations that have ten thousand users, they don't need to bother about the extra cost of the Maestro version. For organizations with one or two thousand users, the Maestro version can be a luxury for them.

How are customer service and support?

The tech support is very helpful for Check Point NGFW. The support team even asks for remote access to resolve the problem immediately. But sometimes, it takes between eight to twelve hours to connect with a level three engineer to get the support. The response time needs to improve. I would rate the tech support a six out of ten.

A firewall is a critical asset, and when there is a problem with the perimeter firewall, an individual cannot communicate outside the organization, so support is required immediately.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

Our company's usual deployment model for the solution is on-premises because cross-border data transmission is prohibited. The installation of Check Point NGFW takes between seven to ten days (working five hours a day). For the banks who are customers of our company, we could only work for deployment after the usual banking hours, so it took longer.

I can conclude that deployment and running the User Accessibility Test (UAT) can take a maximum of forty hours. Two engineers are needed to deploy Check Point NGFW.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have evaluated SentinelOne and CrowdStrike. The rollback feature of ransomware attacks in SentinelOne cannot be found in competitors.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Check Point NGFW over Palo Alto and Cisco as a complex security solution for a complex environment. I would rate the solution a ten out of ten.

Granular with good visibility but needs better training options
Pros and Cons
  • "It is easy to administrate and maintain."
  • "There needs to be advanced troubleshooting."

What is our primary use case?

I've been dealing with the Check Point environment for over eight years, ever since SPLAT, the R75 versions, and mainly with a multi-domain management (former Provider1) set-up. I also use the Smart Management Server, with a standalone/distributed deployment.

I'm currently engaged in the design, implementation, and maintenance of a large-scale Check Point firewall environment (~100 GWs).

Presently, the customer is using Check Point for perimeter security, IPS, threat prevention, encrypted traffic, as well as access to the internet, and multi-domain server architecture.

How has it helped my organization?

The Check Point solution has improved the way the customer organization functions.

People are working within the organization all over the world, across NALA, APAC, and EMEA regions. Having Check Point as a security vendor made it easy to assure people they could access the resources everywhere, from offices, homes, and across the globe, especially during the pandemic, safely.

One of the last implemented projects was replacing an obsolete Client Auth solution with Identity Awareness, including integration to AVD.

What is most valuable?

The solution plays an important role in preventing security incidents from happening and preventing malicious attempts to infiltrate into the organization while quickly adapting and reacting to any attempts. For example, it protected us against Log4J vulnerability a few months ago.

It is easy to administrate and maintain.

The product is very granular in the Logs & Monitor section and also intuitive to use.

It offers good control and visibility over users' identities and actions.

It provides central policy management, which is easy to manage and maintain.

The product offers great performance tuning features like SecureXL, CoreXL, HyperThreading, and Multi-Queue.

What needs improvement?

The study material and training need to be improved and become more accessible to security engineers working with Check Point.

Needs serious skills for advanced troubleshooting. The configuration might get a little bit too complex for regular engineers, compared with easy administration.

We've encountered a few limitations when trying to accomplish simple tasks required by customers. For example, changing a domain name inside an MDS environment or missing a function in the database which removes the domain object completely from the database.

There are plenty of bugs that are not documented, or with too generic error messages.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for eight years.

One area for improvement in Check Point NGFW is the support process. It can be challenging to open a technical support case through the customer portal, often requiring additional steps to open the case.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Check Point NGFW since 2015.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have not experienced any major stability issues with Check Point NGFW.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Check Point NGFW is fairly scalable.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is decent. I would rate them as an eight out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

Setting up a new Check Point NGFW is generally straightforward for us. With our experience and familiarity with the process, we can handle it without encountering any significant issues. We are used to creating simulations and implementing improvements, which facilitates the setup process, even at an intermediary level. We usually require two engineers for the deployment process, along with additional resources like network switches, PCs, and testing equipment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing for Check Point NGFW tends to be higher compared to other options in the market, especially for high-end models. In comparison with enterprise-grade firewalls like Palo Alto, Check Point is among the more expensive choices.

What other advice do I have?

My recommendation for organizations considering implementing Check Point NGFW is to prioritize selecting high-end models for optimal performance and security. Check Point NGFW offers robust protection for networks and data, allowing businesses to maintain their operations with confidence. Overall, I would rate Check Point NGFW as an eight out of ten.

Good support, centrally managed, and easy activation of blades
Pros and Cons
  • "The product offers a robust and intuitive experience, catering to the essential needs of users."
  • "There needs to be a Mac version of the Smart Console."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution as a perimeter and OT demarcation firewall. As we are a large utility company with a distributed network, Check Point plays a vital role in terms of network segmentation. Specifically, we need identity-aware authentication to give us the best VPN compared to other players in the market.

Centralized management is a major plus of Check Point, which provides us with a better user experience.

We use it to safeguard our office network on a routine basis. These firewalls protect against external threats, manage VPN access for remote users, and address various security scenarios.

Our primary focus involves malware prevention, intrusion detection, and ensuring robust security measures to shield our office network from potential cyber threats originating from the internet. It serves as a traditional yet effective security system, providing comprehensive protection against hackers and potential risks associated with internet usage.

How has it helped my organization?

Check Point has a Purpose fit solution for our environment A lot of things need to be improved in Check Point NGFW.

For example, their support team isn't very efficient and useful. The solution itself isn't easy to learn, making it hard for support to provide solutions. The design makes it so pockets (specific teams) have to work together when there's an issue, which creates a mess. Also, Check Point lacks competitive capabilities like SD-WAN and CGM app integration.

Visibility needs improvement. For example, Fortinet shows all connected devices with IP addresses, MAC addresses, and sometimes usernames. More granular detail is crucial for security.

Support efficiency, visibility, and adding competitive capabilities are key areas for improvement.

What is most valuable?

The product offers a robust and intuitive experience, catering to the essential needs of users.

The Cleanup Rule's ability to discard unwanted traffic and the inclusion of default Autonomous Threat Prevention Profiles does simplify security measures; we're able to cater to various deployment scenarios.

I was impressed by how easy it was to activate blades and implement them on a security gateway.

The Smart Console's efficient user interface ensures that the changes to the policy are swiftly made. We're also able to maintain proper audit logs.

What needs improvement?

The solution requires improvements in the following areas:

- Having the Zone Alarm and the standalone endpoint VPN become compatible products.

- Having Smart Console in-place upgrades with IP/fingerprint retention

- A Mac version of the Smart Console.

- Streamlining of the endpoint solution and deployment options.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for ten years.

  • No more legacy SmartDashboard for some features.
  • Streamlining of the endpoint solution and deployment options and also offering the possibility to convert shared policy to unified policy when you run R80.X via some sort of wizard in a layer or so. This is a classical case for people who upgraded their R77 management.
  • Offering a fixed deployment schedule for accumulator hotfixes. This would help us foresee maintenance windows in organizations with rigid change management procedures.
  • Finding a way to restore the object search like in R77, where you could find any part of an object name and not a word in the object.
  • Scheduling policy pushes in Smart Console.

Helps prevent attacks, good central management, and improves visibility
Pros and Cons
  • "One of the valuable characteristics of Check Point NGFW is that it presents very centralized management."
  • "Support cases have been generated several times, and it takes time for the case to be resolved."

What is our primary use case?

We brought all of our cloud platforms to Microsoft Azure. We needed a tool that would give us the security of regulating access control so that we could monitor our environment in case something was penetrating our internal network.

This was the primary movement for which the Check Point NGFW tool was acquired since we needed our collaborators to have secure access to the company's resources and applications since this tool provides us with the alerts and corrections that must be made when finding a security breach in our environment.

Check Point NGFW also provides a great capacity of features that help us apply them to the organization. It has web filtering limited to third parties, SSL encryption, and the application's administration is very simple and centralized since it helps us a lot in reporting and generating alerts.

How has it helped my organization?

The organization needed a tool that would provide various security functionalities in the organization, and so far, Check Point NGFW has helped us a lot. It has helped us by applying access control policies and limiting access to third parties and only those who must enter the organization to use resources and applications.

The application behaved very well with the Azure resources in the cloud; it helped us to prevent several security holes found with web filtering and internal DDoS attack.

Check Point NGFW can quickly identify where the attacks are coming from, provides detailed and complete information on the attacks, and provides zero-day attacks in real-time.

What is most valuable?

One of the valuable characteristics of Check Point NGFW is that it presents very centralized management. Due to this, it's improved our security throughout the organization and outside of it. Many collaborators work from their homes or different places and help us filter, limit of access to packet inspection with flexibility and speed that was not previously possible.

Other characteristics are the records that it shows us and generates depending on its configuration and they are very visible to be able to attack and correct in time, or when superiors ask us for administrative information in that part it provides great value.

What needs improvement?

As such, the tool provides what is expected in its security functionality. However, some points must be improved, such as the latency in the GUI entry. It takes a while to register and allow access to the administrative panel.

Another point where customer service should be improved, both in the administrative and technical fields. Support cases have been generated several times, and it takes time for the case to be resolved. In addition to that, the solutions need to attend to us. It takes a long time to coordinate a call since they do not handle a comprehensive schedule.

For how long have I used the solution?

This solution has been used for approximately one year in the company.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the tool is good. We have not presented any problem even when an update is made.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability presented by the tool is very good and flexible.

How are customer service and support?

The experience has not been very good. That is one of the points that must be improved.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

There was no type of tool that would supply these qualities.

How was the initial setup?

The configuration of the tool is very simple and quick to install.

What about the implementation team?

The installation was done jointly with an engineer provided by the supplier, and his capacity was good.

What was our ROI?

The prices are competitive. However, it is worth making an investment since, in the future, the profit will be seen against any environmental attack.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Check Point manages a good cost in its products and it is worth making the investment since this can prevent a collapse in the organization.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Check Point was always our first option. With this type of solution, many security teams are from Check Point.

What other advice do I have?

The tool behaves well. The only improvement that I have seen that is necessary is to improve the latency when entering the application and they must improve the support.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Microsoft Azure

Good security intelligence, which helps detect threats but room for improvement in stability
Pros and Cons
  • "I like the GUI."
  • "A lot of things need to be improved in Check Point NGFW. One, their support team isn't very efficient and useful."

What is our primary use case?

For Check Point, the main cases are just perimeter security, network security, basically detecting threats on the network, antivirus, application control, visibility, login, and data threat prevention.

What is most valuable?

I like the GUI. In terms of functionality, it used to be the detection capability. Check Point has good security intelligence, which helps detect threats. They have the historical background to do that. But now, Fortinet is a bit better.

What needs improvement?

A lot of things need to be improved in Check Point NGFW. One, their support team isn't very efficient and useful.

The solution itself isn't easy to learn, making it hard for support to provide solutions. The design makes it so pockets (specific teams) have to work together when there's an issue, which creates a mess.

Also, Check Point lacks competitive capabilities like SD-WAN and CGM app integration. And visibility needs improvement. For example, Fortinet shows all connected devices with IP addresses, MAC addresses, and sometimes usernames. More granular detail is crucial for security.

So support efficiency, visibility, and adding competitive capabilities are key areas for improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been with Check Point for a very long time. So, it has been almost six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability a six out of ten. There is room for improvement here.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate the scalability a seven out of ten. My customers are mostly medium-sized businesses, but my clientele also includes enterprises.

How are customer service and support?

There is room for improvement in the customer service and support.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I'm heavily biased towards Fortinet. Check Point is a direct competitor, so from my experience, it's a decent firewall. There are strong points and weak points, but Fortinet is superior for various reasons.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is really straightforward. The GUI is very good. However, the issue I have is with the stability. In terms of simplicity, I don't consider Check Point to be a straightforward solution. Another point to mention is my experience in planning within customer environments. The outcomes are not always as expected.

For instance, when setting up Check Point firewall and flat policies, the policies didn't take effect immediately. There was a situation where the policies took effect after about two hours. Such instances were mind-boggling. Regarding VPN issues, when implementing IP protection between Check Point and other vendors, remote access can be challenging.

In Nigeria, it's predominantly on-premises. Many organizations are moving towards cloud, but many others use a hybrid approach, both on-premises and in the cloud.

A few are using Check Point in the cloud, but most test with Fortinet due to easier integration with public cloud providers like Microsoft. Public cloud vendors also have their own firewalls, like Microsoft and AWS. In terms of adoption, Check Point is behind in cloud adoption in Nigeria.

What about the implementation team?

Overall, the process is very fast and depends on the type of deployment. For example, replacing a Cisco firewall with Check Point requires converting policies, which can take quite a while, depending on the size of the policy base. In my personal experience, setting up Check Point was very quick.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's reasonably priced, but competitors offer much cheaper options. It's market-related, so the pricing makes sense for what Check Point offers.

What other advice do I have?

My recommendation is to consider Fortinet as an alternative. Overall, I'd rate it a seven out of ten. There's room for improvement, especially since Check Point doesn't seem too focused on our region.

In Nigeria, procuring the firewall and bundled services like technical account management and professional services can be challenging. The service delivery is not as efficient as one would expect, which wouldn't be the case for a European customer.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
