Veritas NetBackup Appliance Room for Improvement

The solution needs to take care of encryptions between client and server transactions in a much stronger way because security is a concern.

The solution could function to read the data from other tools or appliances. For example, I have other enrollment backup tools or backup plans stored elsewhere. That would be a valuable integration feature if we could read the data from those tools or plans and import it into NetBackup Appliance, that would be a valuable integration feature.

The challenge arose due to a space issue on my end. However, with the new product we are acquiring, it seems to address that concern.

The issue was related to disk breaks, especially when power cuts occurred. One of the disks would break, leading to a loss of functionality. It's when one of the disks becomes affected, losing its node functionality.

I am satisfied with what I'm getting so far in terms of usability and resilience. I can't really think of anything now that needs improvement. It's very good, and it's very easy to use and understand. I can't say anything that can be improved since I am satisfied with what I'm getting.

I think they can have a cloud version in the future. If we could have Veritas NetBackup Appliance on the cloud, then we don't need to have it always as an on-premises solution. It helps reduce the cost of maintenance in terms of cooling and footprint in the data center. Hence, if we can get the option of having it on the cloud, that'll be very good.

The support for my region could be improved.

The deployment of the physical appliance in case of a disaster is not smart. When they need to restore clients without adhering to factory default settings, they lose data. The recovery of this appliance is not easy. This applies to both the software-based and MSDP storage. It is not easy because I have worked a lot on the tool, and in case it gets corrupted at any point, it is not easy to restore the data without losing information is not easy.

Adding additional features to the configuration of Veritas NetBackup Appliance is essential. For instance, storing metadata in a safe place is crucial for restoring the configuration. If we need to restore the same appliance with its same configuration, we can avoid manual insertion or retrieving data from files. Another noteworthy feature involves uploading a configuration file, allowing the system to process and rebuild the storage accordingly.

I don't like the interface of Veritas. It could be improved. It's not that user-friendly right now.

It's hard to get to the backups. There are too many tabs.

It's like to see replication in Veritas.

The setup is a bit more complex than Veeam.

The upgrade process of the solution needs to be improved since it is extremely complicated, especially without the benefit of a support person who can guide one through it. This can result in many problems. Occasionally we encounter issues with the backup process which necessitate support from Veritas. Consequently, I would highlight the upgrade process as being in need of improvement.

We hope to see SQL Instant Recovery in the 9.0 version. It is the same as VMware Instant Recovery but its restoration processes are very fast, with the ability to handle a terabyte of data in a single minute.

Veritas NetBackup is software, so there are multiple OS issues, OS packages, and updates.

I would like to see the Java control replaced with web control in the next release. There is currently web control, but it is confusing when using Java control. Web control requires no granular settings. Web control should be enhanced so that it looks and feels like Java control. This would enable a person switching from Java control to Web control to not be hesitant to adopt the web version. Currently, Web control is entirely different from Java control.

Veritas NetBackup would benefit from better-explained error codes. The technical documentation should be easy to read, easy to set up, and be more understandable. There are two or three possibilities for one single error, so Veritas should try to bifurcate or separate the issues so each has its own ID.

There aren't any real outstanding features. Right now, the solution works well for us, and I don't think there's much missing per se.

It would be a better solution if we were able to make more reports in regards to the backup system.

There are a few people in Veritas NetBackup Appliance's community support. In case of technical issues, it becomes difficult to find solutions from other users. They should improve this area so that customers can resolve issues correctly. Additionally, an auto command feature could be included in it, similar to Rubrik.

Depending on the setup structure, it can be complex to implement.

In my case, it's an enterprise environment, and they're always complicated. There's no way to get around there. With Backup Exec, everything is on Windows, and you don't have to worry about it. However, if there's going to be a critical Oracle database on the Unix system and then you're going to have new Windows and the Linux, it is going to be complicated. There's no way around it, particularly with the customers.

We've only been using the solution for one year, and since we've installed it, it's been running fine, so I don't have any complaints about it so far. It could be improved if it was easier to run some command items on the GUI. If they could make it a bit more user-friendly then it would be helpful.

In future releases, it would be helpful if there was something to help make recovery easy and the process faster. They need some sort of restore related feature similar to what VMware offers, in which you can directly use the image of a backup. For example, they could offer to make it so you can create a backup that can sit in your storage that you can use to send an image map via email or somewhere convenient.

Also, sometimes when you have multiple appliances, you have to physically manage them one by one. It's okay if you have a few, but when you have ten or more, it's a bit annoying and takes more people/time to handle the management.

The scalability isn't great. Every time you want to add storage, you can't just add a little bit, you need to add a lot.

In a future release, they should make it NetApp storage, that's something there on the roadmap that's not available now.

We had some problems with the backup of the physical server. With the virtual machine field, the virtual server area was very strong. We had some difficulties with the physical server, the IBM Power, and the AIX operating system. The problems were with both the server-side and the storage-side. There were also issues in doing the back up for a physical server with others, like Windows server.

This is not a very complex problem in a Virtual environment, but we are facing a Legacy infrastructure, and we had some problems with Veritas and integrating with the Legacy hardware.

The interface is very poor. Currently, they are working on implementing a new web interface that enables the multi-tenancy directly on the user. The new features that they are implementing are faster and in terms of functionalities, they cover a lot of enterprise challenges.

I would like the ability to recover a single folder within the backup of a virtual machine. As it is now, if I want to retrieve a single folder then I need to first recover the entire VM and then copy that one folder. This takes longer than it should for this operation.

The price of this solution should be lowered by ten or fifteen percent. This would help to compete in an environment where people and companies share licenses, effectively lowering their price. I estimate that our sales would increase by fifty percent if the prices were lowered.

If you compare the solution to, for example, Dell Data Domain, it looks that the deduplication ratio is even higher than what we have on NetBackup. If they want to improve, then they should look at the deduplication ratio in future versions.

The configuration can sometimes be tricky during implementation.

If the features could be complete in that they can work on all systems, all operating systems, that would be ideal. We have a lot of diversity and integrations to the cloud. This means, for example, if your Flex Appliances are not sufficient, you, for example, can offload to Azure Cloud. I know in some devices it's already possible. However, it's not universally the case.

Today, if we have to implement it as software, if we are talking about virtual appliances, we need to implement it as software. However, it could also be developed as a package, so that you just have to mount it and to have the service. That would also be an advantage.

It is a very robust and very good product from the appliance point of view, as well as the software point of view, however, you need to have a certain level of skills in order to operate it properly. You need to be experienced at a certain level to easily manage everything. In that sense, it's not straightforward.

It's very difficult, for example, if you need to analyze the logs. If you don't know what you're doing, if you're not very experienced, you will find it very difficult to do things yourself. It's an enterprise-level solution, after all, and it has a lot of things to do. That might be the reason why it is like this. It's not for entry-level people.

In terms of implementing the solution, it's quite technical. You need to be knowledgable in order to pull off a successful deployment.

This solution has to have better integration with the cloud, as well as with other solutions such as Business Intelligence products.

They need to simplify the backup licensing model, as it is really complex at the moment. We are having problems with them because of the licensing, and this is why we are changing solutions.

It is not easy to manage the environment, and you need the expertise to do it.

The backup catalog is very complex and takes a lot of space compared to other vendors. There is an important need for a better catalog management system.

The only drawback for NetBackup, and of course for Veritas, is that they have stuck to the same environment and to the same user interface. This needs to be improved in future releases. It needs to be more dynamic.

I would like to see more prepared, pre-configured reports and higher integration with other leading-edge products. I'm not talking about backup solutions. I'm talking about other services like ticketing systems such as ServiceNow.

The interface is ok, but not the best. Newer solutions have more flexible interfaces. This interface provides more detail but is not as friendly for the non-technical user. I would like to see a product that requires less expertise to manage it. Companies are struggling with getting people who are experts, so a product with less knowledge-intensive requirements would be better.

Having more templates that help to accomplish things based on best practices for vertical solutions are needed. For example, more support for virtual environments.

I would like to see support for different cloud providers with specific features for each one. If I'm working with Amazon, I would expect it to support the specific features of Amazon. If I was to migrate my solution, my systems, or applications from cloud-to-cloud, I want to be able to do it easily and transparently. Similarly, if I want to migrate from on-premise to cloud, it should be easy. The same should be true for hybrid-cloud environments because there are intensive knowledge requirements.

If you have got a NetBackup Appliance, then you have many options. For example, you can do LTR (Long Term Retention) busted out to the cloud. If you have got longtime retentions then you can do that as an option.

When you use appliances then you need to make the investment. They do not give it to you cheaply. So, this investment is an RTO (Recovery Time Objective). People who would like not to have this as their objective prefer to go for more of an on-demand solution, like the cloud. Most of the organizations I see are going to the cloud and they escape the physical architecture to minimize investment in their local data center as much as possible.

So we, in turn, are currently using the VMware on an appliance, but we are planning to go through the process of decommissioning as much hardware as possible for our solutions. We would like to do that as quickly as possible.
