Helped us emphasize centralized management during production
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable part of Nutanix is its centralized management of everything."
  • "Nutanix misses alerts sometimes."

What is our primary use case?

We use the Nutanix AHV Virtualization solution for production purposes only. We use other solutions for application servers, such as on-premises physical ESX servers.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable part of Nutanix is its centralized management of everything. You have the storage pool, network pool, storage controller, and processes running inside the Nutanix ZooKeeper, Stargate, and Medusa services. These processes are not inside ESXi, so they must be managed separately.

There is no issue in Nutanix. If one node goes down with any hardware failure, it has a hardware and software host.

What needs improvement?

Nutanix misses alerts sometimes. To improve this, Nutanix should integrate with Eskom, an existing monitoring tool. This would allow Nutanix to receive alerts from Eskom instead of having to install and configure its monitoring tool. This would be a great feature, as it would allow Nutanix to receive alerts for all physical devices and processes, even if Nutanix itself does not manage them.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Nutanix AHV Virtualization for three years. We are using the latest version of the solution.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product's stability is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

AHV virtualization is scalable, with enhanced security features. One thousand five hundred users are using this solution in our organization.

How are customer service and support?

The customer support is good.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy. If you are unboxing Nutanix appliances from the storage and need to install the entire cluster, it will take at least two to three days to install, configure, and migrate virtual machines from ESXi to AHV.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The product is costly and comes with an annual subscription. There are other solutions like Cisco UCS, vSAN, and Azure Stack. Azure Stack is a particularly significant competitor, as it is cheaper than Nutanix.

What other advice do I have?

Instead of creating a storage account and configuring other things, you should be able to create a cloud cluster, deploy it, remove it, and migrate VMs from on-premises to the cloud and vice versa, all within Prism Central in a user-friendly way. You should work more on AWS, GCP, Azure, and Kubernetes integration and services. You can deploy Kubernetes services inside the Nutanix AHV hypervisor.

Instead of creating a new system, I think improving the existing Nutanix AHV Virtualization KB document would be more helpful. The KB document has a lot of information, but finding specific solutions to problems can be difficult. For example, if you install a KB fix and an application stops working, you may have to read many documents to find the solution. This can be lengthy, and raising a ticket with Nutanix may be necessary. Finding the needed information would be easier if the KB document were better organized and structured.

If you need a protection database server, I recommend Nutanix. It is very fast. However, if you run applications, Nutanix is not the best choice. Other products in the market are better suited for applications.

Overall, I rate the solution a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Offers AVH features at a more cost-effective price point
Pros and Cons
  • "This product stands out for its user-friendly interface, intuitive design, and responsive UI. It offers AVH features comparable to Nutanix but at a more cost-effective price point."
  • "It should focus on providing more detailed and helpful error messages. One area we'd like to see enhanced is better support for guest VMs, especially in a heterogeneous environment."

What is our primary use case?

We majorly use Nutanix AHV Virtualization for server consolidation.

What is most valuable?

This product stands out for its user-friendly interface, intuitive design, and responsive UI. It offers AVH features comparable to Nutanix but at a more cost-effective price point.

What needs improvement?

It should focus on providing more detailed and helpful error messages. One area we'd like to see enhanced is better support for guest VMs, especially in a heterogeneous environment. However, there are no specific additional features that come to mind for the next release.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Nutanix AHV Virtualization for six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable with very few incidents of crashing or requiring reboots. I would rate it 8 out of 10.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable and would rate it 8 out of 10. Almost 50% of our users use this and belong from medium sized enterprises.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup can be rated at five. It was more complex compared to other solutions like VMware, which had additional steps such as running foundation and configuring settings. The deployment process involves preparing the hardware, ensuring it's in place, and then following a straightforward process of powering on, rebooting, and installing the necessary components. The preparation phase includes sizing the environment, gathering information about networks, and connections. Once everything is in place, deploying the solution is relatively quick and straightforward, especially when compared to other devices.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I would rate pricing a six out of ten, since it is affordable. The price is fixed but requires additional costs for additional features

What other advice do I have?

I recommend thorough research and understanding of its capabilities before making a decision. Consider your specific needs and, if needed, try the community edition for a proof of concept. Overall, I rate the product an 8/10

An all-in-one solution with valuable micro-segmentation capabilities
Pros and Cons
  • "With AHV, you can run micro-segmentation, which is, on the network security level, to have network virtualization across clouds."
  • "Some companies do not support AHV."

What is our primary use case?

In cloud environments, where you do not know which hypervisor is used, Nutanix allows you to run a hypervisor from Microsoft and VMware, and they offer their hypervisor, which in some respects does have some benefits on the price level and the technology level. We use AHV because we get a broader integrated spectrum of functionality. More performance, less price, and functionalities going up. AHV hypervisor is based on KVM, which is an open-source product. Our clients are from small to enterprise-level customers.

What is most valuable?

The features I find valuable depending on the client's use cases. If the clients need high-performance storage, we can bypass some layers and be faster. With AHV, you can run micro-segmentation, which is, on the network security level, to have network virtualization across clouds. It's on a cloud data center. Most customers are interested in one aspect. Smaller customers are looking more at the price. Bigger customers are looking at network virtualization or micro-segmentation types of things. They're more attracted to functionalities.

What needs improvement?

Some companies do not support AHV. Similarly, AHV is not supported on Alibaba and other Chinese clouds.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used this solution since it was made available around five years ago.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is stable. It is on par with or even better than the hypervisor from VMware.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

When discussing AHV, statements such as cloud deployment depend on AOS usage. In this case, AHV is not scalable.

How are customer service and support?

The complete support from Nutanix is outstanding. It's much better than all the other vendors I know of. This might change in the future, but they're providing exceptional support. You're directly connected to a support engineer. The support engineer is working with you on the case. That depends on when you opened the case, and you still might end up in Bangalore with a few problems with Indian English, but these engineers are really good. You can move to another engineer if you'd like, you can escalate, and I've never had a problem with the SLA where they did not react within the agreed time. They're usually faster, good at what they do, and even help you solve problems with products they don't sell, for example, VMware. They know about VMware. Sometimes you have some flaws, but it depends on the people and the communication, which is a rare case.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. The deployment for a complete cluster, to hand it over to production, is one or two days.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you just look at the hardware, you might think this is an expensive solution. Looking at the hardware and the software licenses, too, it might look expensive, but in the end, the return on investment is there. If you build it up on your own using different components, orchestrate the demo, and make the comparison correctly, you will find it is not expensive. The value AHV brings is great. We have received a return on investment with a lot of customers.

What other advice do I have?

There is a benefit gained by nearly all customers in switching to AHV, as AHV offers different benefits. Every customer will find a sweet spot to justify moving away from the existing hypervisor. It is attractive for the client to move. All the customers we know of and have worked with didn't switch back from AHV.

Sometimes we have to run both hypervisors on different clusters because of the software vendor not supporting AHV. Still, you don't have a lot of companies whose software products do not support AHV as a hypervisor. Where they do not support AHV, these are older applications where the software developer tries to reduce complexity, focusing only on one hypervisor, the market leader. But this is changing, and even the cloud challenges software developers because the cloud does not tell you which hypervisor is running in the cloud. They have to move on.

You can deploy the solution on your infrastructure, or you can deploy it onto AWS or Azure. AHV is not supported on GCP. It probably will be in the future.

If your client's business is too small, Nutanix AHV Virtualization might be too expensive. For example, if there's an appliance in an agricultural machine, this might not be the right use case. The smallest use case might be in a small sales office, remote and branch offices, enterprise data centers, and even large companies running multiple SAP HANA enterprise resource planning applications. They're all supported. You can run them on the AHV platform. If your use case is small, and price tag and energy consumption is priority, this is not the solution for you.

There are applications you can't run on this. For example, if you need more than four CPU sockets, and no hardware is supported with more than four CPU sockets, you need a good reason to have your special hardware. There are extreme boundaries to the left and right, but a wide range of use cases can be covered.

AHV is not scalable in the context of AOS usage. I'm mixing the functionality of AOS, which is used in AHV, so I can't separate it. But if you do have enough knowledge, you can say, "Oh, this is based on the functionality that AOS brings and not the functionality that AHV brings." Therefore, it's still okay, but you argue if the statements only focus on AHV.

If you plan on purchasing AHV, you must understand that Nutanix is disruptive. It can't be compared with other solutions. You need to open your mind and look at it without comparing. If you compare it with the solutions you know, you will not move forward because though it is different, it has benefits. You have to have a closer look at it. Nutanix provides storage, an integrated solution, but only 10% of the functionality is storage. If you just reduce it to storage, you're missing 90% of the benefits.

I rate Nutanix AHV Virtualization a ten out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Lightweight, integrates well, and the technical support is responsive
Pros and Cons
  • "The support is excellent."
  • "If you want to install a specific operating system, you must first check to see if it is listed in the compatibility list; only then will you be able to install it, and that is one issue for now."

What is our primary use case?

To use geo clusters, you must have AHV running at the bottom of Prism Central. That was one application. Clusters must connect to multiple geographic locations.

Second, we needed a lightweight system that could integrate with AHV Prism natively.

Nutanix It was an out-of-the-box integration with AHV being Nutanix and Prism being Nutanix. We didn't have to do anything special to integrate it with Prism.

Third, an application feature was available with AHV that was not available with VMware or other solutions. That feature enabled us to create VM-level recovery and production sites across our spectrum.

Fourth, the way AHV and CVM actually work, because if you buy VMware, it must be integrated with vSAN; in this case, CVM was integrated with AHV.

What needs improvement?

Many backup solutions that we use today are available for purchase, be it IBM, VMware, Veritas, or anything else. They usually have very good vSphere and Hyper-V support. Because there isn't much AHV deployment in place, we typically have issues with the integrations that AHV has with backup solutions. We would like to see AHV's backup solution integration improved so that we can take VM-level backups directly from Nutanix.

The issue is that it provides a higher VM level for VMware and other areas. When it comes to AHV, however, you must purchase a separate set of third-party software, which can then supplement that backup via your IBM Spectrum Protect Plus.

One issue we frequently encounter when using AHV is that if you want to install specific software, you must first gain compatibility.

If you want to install an operating system, or OS, on top of your AHV, only a few operating systems are supported. That is one area where I would like to see some progress. VMware typically supports almost all of our systems, as does Hyper-V, but when it comes to AHV, we must apply specific patches in order to run it on top of AHV. Operating system support must be improved out of the box.

If you want to install software, you must first ensure that it is compatible with Nutanix AHV; not all software is compatible.

It is not possible to integrate it with everything. There is limited compatibility with the software that can be installed on top of Nutanix AHV, for example.

If you want to install a specific operating system, you must first check to see if it is listed in the compatibility list; only then will you be able to install it, and that is one issue for now.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Nutanix AHV Virtualization for approximately three to four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We had a few issues initially. There was some upgrading required because the system was initially behaving abnormally due to a firmware issue that was causing issues with our memory. However, a fix was provided, and we have had no problems since. We had no problems because Nutanix usually provides proactive support.

Overall Nutanix AHV Virtualization is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Nutanix AHV Virtualization is a very scalable solution.

I have approximately 6,000 people who use the services that I provide on top of this AHV system.

Because we are running Oracle-based ERP on that, all of the users are internal.

How are customer service and support?

In terms of support, there are two systems that I usually consider. First and foremost, it is most likely proactive in identifying any future problems that the team may encounter.

They have a system that allows them to log in every day to the support team, and they actually go through that support and let us know if they see any problems. For example, if we have a problem, and we engage the Nutanix resources, most of the resources that Nutanix aligns with us are very good technically, and they usually resolve the problem within an hour or two at most.

The support is excellent.

I would rate the technical support a five out of five because it is critical that vendors can see what the problem is with the product after they have made a sale.

It is important that the team providing user support assists us in resolving issues as quickly as possible.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Spectrum Protect Plus, is an IBM product, that we are using for backup and recovery.

We used multiple platforms to evaluate the products. What we were aiming for was a private cloud server environment in which we could provide application services, infrastructure services, and other similar services for a fee. This was the solution's actual vision.

To evaluate the product, we needed to consider a variety of factors. One was the product's technical soundness.

VMware has already been used in several cases, but the issue was that in the case of VMware, we had to procure four to five different solutions. For example, to deliver the same feature set as Nutanix Prism Central, we had to purchase vRealize Orchestrator, vRealize Operations Manager, Orchestrator, the NSX platform, and so on.

We chose Nutanix AHV Virtualization primarily because we did not require other products, for example, when comparing it to VMware, we simply listed three additional products that we required to deploy the VMware hyperconverged option. We chose Nutanix AHV because it was obviously the easier option.

How was the initial setup?

Nutanix Management Cluster was the solution we chose, with Nutanix Prism running on top.

It was pretty straightforward; all you had to do was turn on the hardware, and the software was already installed.

Nutanix can send you those configured, pre-installed, and up-and-running systems; all you have to do is bring it in and do the system. There was nothing to be done; the only initial configuration was to connect the cluster to the system, and that was it.

I would rate the initial setup a five out of five.

Everything was predeployed and preconfigured. We only needed to plug in the power and network to get it up and running.

The entire setup took about 15 to 20 minutes. It was just bouncing the servers and powering the bot.

Both options are available. You can also have a hybrid model, as well as an on-premises model and a cloud model. It really depends on how you want your infrastructure to be designed. We have a model that is on-premises.

We have the on-premises version of AHV, and as I mentioned earlier, everything grew so large that we had to move on-premises.

It is essentially self-sustaining. We don't have to intervene very often.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We can purchase a subscription and have a specific piece of hardware and software available on the cloud. We have the on-premises version.

There are two types of AHV licenses available on the market. The first is the perpetual model, in which the license is purchased once and an annual support fee is paid, and the second is the Cluster model.

When we removed AHV, we were left with the perpetual model.

We paid a one-time fee for the license, and there is an annual maintenance or support fee for patches and everything else.

We do not pay licensing costs on an annual basis, and we pay the support and maintenance fees once a year to ensure that we have the necessary support and maintenance.

The annual maintenance cost is approximately 15 to 18% of the actual cost that you pay. If you buy the solution for $100,000, the support and maintenance contract will cost you $15,000 per year.

It is dependent on the use case. If you only want to buy a hypervisor, it is a very expensive product; however, if you look at the entire solution as a whole, totality, it is less expensive. Because when we compared the prices of VMware and Nutanix as a whole bundle, there was a difference of around 25%, with Nutanix being 25% less expensive because you are purchasing the entire package.

Based on my experience, if you want to buy virtualization and other things, it is a little pricey, but it showed us what the value is.

Price can be a bit slow if you want to break into the market, but it is a premium product, it is pricey.

I would rate the pricing a three out of five. It is expensive, but it also provides the value for money and performance that you require as a hyperconverged and virtualization software.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We were looking for a turnkey solution for a hyperconverged system.

There were several options available, including Nutanix with VMware vSphere as the virtualization layer, Hyper-V as the virtualization layer, and AHV as the virtualization layer.

Certain feature sets are only available with AHV hypervisors when it comes to Nutanix clusters.

What other advice do I have?

Because they have revisions for backup, and their availability, I would rate Nutanix AHV Virtualization an eight out of ten.

A good product when it comes to scalability, stability, and manageability features that offer great technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "It is a stable solution. I haven't faced stability issues in the solution."
  • "To face no complications in our company, we had to switch off virtual machines one after the other before heading to Nutanix platform and going to edge services to switch off and turn off everything, making it a challenging process for me."

What is our primary use case?

I use Nutanix AHV Virtualization for the servers in our bank, where we have a lot of applications. In general, my bank uses Nutanix AHV Virtualization to host our application servers.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of the solution stem from the fact that I have never had to face any security issues from the use of the solution. I haven't faced any issues like ransomware when using Nutanix AHV Virtualization.

What needs improvement?

When cleaning up my environment and server room during one of the projects, my bank wanted us to shut down the servers. To face no complications in our company, we had to switch off virtual machines one after the other before heading to Nutanix platform and going to edge services to switch off and turn off everything, making it a challenging process for me. The aforementioned area can be considered for improvement in the solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Nutanix AHV Virtualization for six years. I am a user of Nutanix.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable solution. I haven't faced stability issues in the solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I haven't faced any problems with the solution's scalability.

I am the only administrator for the solution. My company's other branches located in Tanzania, Zambia, and Kenya are planning to move away from Nutanix AHV Virtualization. Still, I think we should try to standardize the platforms to get better future support.

How are customer service and support?

I don't have any problem with the solution's technical support. I rate the technical support a ten out of ten since I like the platform. You may find that you may go into the platform and call other people to discuss your issues with the platform, making it one area where I think that I should have a little bit of control.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Nutanix AHV Virtualization was simple because I understood the product, and I could go through a few tutorials since I was given access to the platform where I could see everything related to the product at once. In Nutanix AHV Virtualization, when I was working with edge devices off-site remotely, I saw that it had many layers since there were too many releases and logins, making it look very demanding.

The solution is deployed on an on-premises model.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I have been trying to determine if I need to opt for a single package or two packages to operate Nutanix and virtual machines. I would like to see some documentation from Nutanix providing clarity over the aforementioned statement.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

My company chose Nutanix AHV Virtualization over other platforms in the market since it was a recommendation made by the main office of my company. My company mostly operates from South Africa, and from there, we get the direction to go ahead with our work, so today, they can suggest we use one platform, while tomorrow, they may recommend another.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend Nutanix AHV Virtualization to others who plan to use it since I personally prefer the solution, especially in scenarios where I get absolute control over the product. Currently, my control over the product is limited since there are people between me and Nutanix AHV Virtualization.

Considering the solution's scalability, stability, and manageability options, I rate the overall product a ten out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

A complete solution for server virtualization with no licensing issue and is bundled product with Nutanix
Pros and Cons
  • "Nutanix AHV virtualization requires little disk size for a huge number of servers. We can do everything from a single dashboard, monitoring performance, and single-task boxes."
  • "I would like to see better decompression or degrouping of the VMs so that we can use a single number of SQLs with two servers. We don't need a huge number of DXSPs."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution for server virtualization. It is a good product.

What is most valuable?

Nutanix AHV virtualization requires little disk size for a huge number of servers. We can do everything from a single dashboard, monitoring performance, and single-task boxes. It is a very good and excellent product in terms of manageability. We can replicate it to multiple devices at times.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see better decompression or degrouping of the VMs so that we can use a single number of SQLs with two servers. We don't need a huge number of DXSPs.

The decompression should be better. In my experience with the VMware product, they don't have this type of solution. But we can do it with Nutanix AHV.

In future releases, I would also like to see support for replication with the Centralized Data Reduction (CDR) application. This would allow us to replicate our data to a single dashboard without having to use ASRM or any other third-party solution. It would be a major improvement, and I hope that Nutanix will add this feature in the next version of AHV.

VMware has a decompression function that Nutanix doesn't have, and I would like to see that function added to Nutanix in the next version.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Nutanix AHV Virtualization for about three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the solution’s stability a ten out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There's no limit, we can have it on multiple servers. Our whole company's employees are using this solution.

I rate the solution’s scalability a ten out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

The support team is fantastic. We raise a ticket, and they can quickly define the issue and assign it a priority level of 0, 1, 2, or 3. If the issue is fairly high-priority, we get support with a deep view of the problem.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very simple. There's no complication.

What about the implementation team?

Anyone can easily deploy the solution because it is easy to use. There is no huge learning curve required.

However, we have about five people for maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There is no licensing issue. It is a bundled product with Nutanix.

I rate the solution’s pricing a five out of ten.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We utilize alternative solutions such as VMware or Microsoft. Each of these products comes as a distinct offering, whereas Nutanix AHV comes as a bundled package.

Upon acquiring a Nutanix system, all necessary components are readily available, eliminating the need for additional APN, networking, or application software like HRA. There's no requirement for supplementary bundled products. This aspect truly sets Nutanix AHV apart as a remarkable and comprehensive solution.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.

Opting to go with Nutanix has resulted in zero downtime over the last two years, and reduced operational burden
Pros and Cons
  • "The feature that has had the most impact is data locality. That is a feature that makes Nutanix different from other hypervisors. It helps us to get application performance that is probably double what we got with the legacy, three-tier architecture."
  • "If we have to opt for a high level of capacity planning and need more analytics—like deciding on new purchases or budgeting, or if we need additional resources in the near future—we need to pay for Prism Central. I would suggest that Nutanix improve a bit on the analytics part of Prism Element so we can calculate those kinds of things within that flavor."

What is our primary use case?

We are hosting our mission-critical applications on the Nutanix cluster.

Because of our business needs and application requirements, we have some limitations in terms of migrating our services to the cloud. As a hospital, we need ultra-low latency applications that are very critical for patient care. We need our solution within the same building so that latency requirements can be met. We have a huge amount of data and accessing it is more easily feasible within the data center within our building.

How has it helped my organization?

The main advantage we have now, using Nutanix AHV Virtualization, is that it has helped us reduce downtime. Earlier, we were on a three-tier infrastructure, with separate server, storage, and network. Opting to go with Nutanix SDI over the last two years has resulted in zero downtime. Even if there is maintenance is going on for upgrades, there is zero downtime. DR runbooks and snapshots have both helped us.

In addition, the security features have helped reduce operational challenges. Out-of-the-box, the security of AHV is already hard-coded and hardened. As a customer, I don't have to worry about the security or about adding another layer of security.

It is super easy to manage and doesn't require any specific technical skills to operate. We can provision new infrastructure on-demand with a few clicks. Because of that, it has reduced our IT administration overhead by up to 85 percent. If we compare provisioning network and storage and servers separately with the way that is done in Nutanix, it takes that much less time to provision new servers and resources. That is a big gift.

It has reduced the burden on our administrators. That 85 percent of time is available for an administrator to do other things, rather than providing and monitoring the resources. This is the big takeaway that we have achieved.

And in terms of consolidation, we have placed all of our high-I/O-latency and critical applications on Nutanix SDI. Initially, they were on legacy hardware from different OEMs, like Dell and HPE. Managing those older solutions required multiple skill sets, in Dell and HPE. Now that we have migrated these critical applications to Nutanix, there is no backend. The technology is working in the backend and, as an administrator, I don't have to do a deep dive into the technology. This consolidation was critical and that's why we moved to Nutanix.

We removed a legacy SAN from our environment. Initially, we had separate servers and then the SAN switches. With the SDI consolidation, we don't need any additional SAN boxes or switches to run the applications or servers. We bought our Nutanix solution with enough storage so that we could eliminate the SAN part, and it has helped us with performance as well, because the storage is directly attached to the Nutanix boxes.

What is most valuable?

The hypervisor AHV itself is the most valuable because it is almost invisible, from an administrative point of view. There's nothing to maintain or learn about the hypervisor technology Nutanix has used.

The feature that has had the most impact is data locality. That is a feature that makes Nutanix different from other hypervisors. It helps us to get application performance that is probably double what we got with the legacy, three-tier architecture.

It also supports all platforms, like Microsoft, Linux, and other OVF templates. It is kike other hypervisors in that it is equally capable and enterprise-class. And another very helpful aspect, from a cost point of view, is that it's free.

And when it comes to application visibility and performance, we can see it all in a single window. We get a realistic view of our application performance and security.

What needs improvement?

Nutanix has a Prism Central flavor and a Prism Element flavor. Prism Element is the very basic level. It provides management for Nutanix AHV. If we have to opt for a high level of capacity planning and need more analytics—like deciding on new purchases or budgeting, or if we need additional resources in the near future—we need to pay for Prism Central. I would suggest that Nutanix improve a bit on the analytics part of Prism Element so we can calculate those kinds of things within that flavor.

For how long have I used the solution?

We bought it in December 2019 and it was in production in the first quarter of 2020, so we have been using Nutanix AHV Virtualization for more than two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is super stable. I have used ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V in addition to AHV. I have experience on all three platforms and they are equally stable. AHV is an enterprise-class hypervisor.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is very scalable. We can scale horizontally. If we need memory, we can buy a memory-intensive node and add it to the cluster in the same way we would for compute or storage.

We have around 1,500 users in our organization. All of them use the applications that are hosted on Nutanix.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is very good. We have a variety of services from different OEMs. What I admire about Nutanix is that they really have very good support. That is one of the greatest things that puts Nutanix ahead of its competitors. It is 24x7 support, and its SLAs are very defined. Their guys are super technical and they take ownership of a case. In fact, as a customer, if I miss something, they will reach out to me. That is something I have not seen with many OEMs.

They also have something called Nutanix Insight. It is an integrated platform. Suppose there is a hard drive failure in our cluster. Their support will automatically know and they will dispatch the part, without even raising a ticket.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We had legacy infrastructure, including physical servers, storage, and network switches, from different OEMs: Dell, Cisco, HPE. We removed all of them and opted for Nutanix AHV.

How was the initial setup?

We have two clusters. One is our single-node DR cluster and one is our main, four-node hospital cluster, which is our main site. The clusters are in the same city, about 10 kilometers apart.

The initial deployment was straightforward for us. Nutanix has many partners in India and they aligned us with one of those partners. The partner came to us and assessed our existing infrastructure and then set up our environment by converting our physical infrastructure to the ESXi. From the ESXi, they migrated our servers to Nutanix AHV. There was hardly any downtime during the migration process, and everything went smoothly.

It took around three weeks to complete the deployment. There were two people involved, one from the OEM and me.

The maintenance it requires is super low. It has a feature called LCM (life cycle manager). As an administrator, I just have to just see if an update is available and then click on Update. It automatically updates. Nothing else is required from us. When maintenance has to happen, our applications will automatically migrate to other servers and they'll keep on running. End-users will never notice when maintenance going on. There isn't a single challenge with updating. It is super easy.

Adding compute and storage on-demand is also super easy. If I have to add compute, I just have to buy a node and expand the cluster. That's it. It will auto-discover the node and add it. It is a live procedure, so our existing workload is never impacted.

What was our ROI?

We have seen return on investment because we don't have to pay maintenance costs for the different legacy OEMs that we removed. It has saved us about 45 percent.

In terms of total cost of operations, Nutanix has also helped us a lot because, now, a single administrator can take care of network, server, and storage, because it is a consolidated box. Previously, we needed different guys, one for servers, an expert for storage, and another for network. One person is now doing the job of three people.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We assessed many solutions including SimpliVity from HPE, VxRail from Dell, and AHV from Nutanix. We did a comparison and we found that Nutanix AHV fit our budget and our feature requirements.

What other advice do I have?

I definitely recommend it and have done so to many of my peers in the industry. A few of those colleagues were super excited when they got an overview of the product.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
