There might be multiple use cases in my company, but in my specific area, we are using it for doing asynchronous sync between the production and the DR servers. We have a financial trading system that needs to have a common storage space so that the servers we are running can access the same storage in the HA mode, which is the high-availability mode of the Artemis and FIX engines. We are using NetApp storage to be accessed by those servers.

My use case for the solution includes both business and personal aspects. Personally, I run a lot of file and storage activities at home, managing database operations, and I prefer using NetApp as my backend storage to store data in the cloud instead of relying on third parties storage.

For the business case at my company, we utilize it effectively, and I support it myself by troubleshooting NetApp issues. In our organization, we mostly use NetApp ONTAP. We also use some features that come with NetApp, such as Cloud Insights and Systems Manager.

I have been using this solution for the past year to store our data. We are utilizing a combination of multiple instances, around 20 to 30, and configuring the storage with NetApp ONTAP

It functions like shared storage, the data that we use in the instances is stored with NetApp ONTAP. We have configured it as shared storage.

We implemented ONTAP because it provides a unified management interface for all storage, simplifying administration by using the same language for both SAN and NAS environments.

We have multiple data centers in different countries where we need local access to shared storage and network storage.

We have AFF platforms and FAS platforms from NetApp for either hot storage purposes or cold storage, with cold being our backups and hot being for our production applications.

The types of storage volumes we have are for virtual machine hard disk storage. We currently are using VMware and will be switching away from that due to the Broadcom license situation, but NetApp ONTAP works very well with VMware as it is integrated effectively. We rely on it for that.

Additionally, we use Kubernetes and have numerous applications hosted in that environment. We use multiple protocols for persistent volumes including NFS, iSCSI, and NVMe over TCP. These comprise our main use cases.

I choose NetApp ONTAP over their competition because NetApp ONTAP and its devices are very powerful, with excellent scalability and efficiency in input/output operations per second. The ease of use of their operating systems is something you cannot compare, as they are very stable, and I am always happy with this.

The main use cases for NetApp ONTAP are that it's a feature-rich file system technology, which can be viewed in different operations from my experience working as a subject matter expert on the management side and the AWS side.

It's an operating system that works the same way as a traditional file system, where you need to have a separate compute for it, and it's quite intuitive that you can interact with it the way you would a Unix or Linux system. The operating system itself is uniquely based. Some of the use cases that customers use it for include file shares, which could be for protocols such as Linux or Unix protocols, as well as Windows CIFS and SMB file shares.

The nice thing about it is that you can have these systems use the NetApp ONTAP file share, whether you are a Unix or Linux user, and the most helpful thing about it is that you can manage all those users and allow them to have permissions, finding different configurations when it comes to that.

Another noteworthy feature is compression, which optimizes space, as it helps with deduplication to manage redundant files and optimize space. Moreover, it has its own disaster recovery and archiving solution called SnapMirror, which is their snapshot replication technology that replicates data to a secondary site for high availability and durability.

In terms of emerging technologies, NetApp ONTAP can interact with large language models and perform natural language processing tasks, acting as a data source to train AI applications and efficiently query data. Additionally, with its in-built monitoring capabilities, NetApp ONTAP aids in indexing due to its structured file system.

We are capable of implementing, migrating, and the configuration information of NetApp. We have 7-Mode and C-mode ONTAP operating systems from NetApp. 7-Mode, which is out of date and has expired from NetApp's vendor. They have created their own kernel for ONTAP, a cluster Data ONTAP. For the time being, they are only doing and providing the ONTAP cluster data, ONTAP to the customer. Customers who are using the 7-Mode data, 7-Mode ONTAP are systems that have not yet been upgraded. Whatever previous series hardware they are using, is incompatible with the C mode cluster data ONTAP. As a result, they are constantly taking care of and having to refresh their customers and providing the solution to the migratory or existing data to the new Data ONTAP system.

I've implemented many customized enterprise levels, and I've also done many migrations. Basically, storage that is currently in use, as well as a SAN protocol and how we are using it for all of our heterogeneous environments, such as VMware, Windows, Linux, and Unix.

NetApp ONTAP is an operating system, similar to Windows, which we use for accessing the Windows client.

NetApp is storage similar to EMC. EMC is one of the storage vendors; they provide EMC, such as Dell EMC, Synology, Dell, and IBM. NetApp is one of the market's leading providers of SAN and NAS protocols to end users, as well as critical business solutions.

Currently, with NetApp application scenarios you can see that if you have a high,  business-critical application, it will require high IOPs to access this application from one of the storage options listed. Assume you're using an SAP HANA, or any other high IOPs utilization application, such as SAP, HANA, or any other tool. In these cases, NetApp has a solution. They have hardware such as an all-flash disc, which means they can use all-flash storage in between this solution fulfillment. If you have a hundred users logging in at the same time, you are using a business-critical application, it should not include any database applications such as Oracle Database. In such cases, they provide the SAN-based solution from NetApp and meet your NetApp storage requirements.

We use NetApp ONTAP for everything. Because it is hybrid, we use it in a private cloud environment and in our shared environment with a very broad range of IOPS requirements, which means we use it as the basis for our VMware environments and as a storage for databases. In the backup area, we use it with HDDs—with the cheaper ones—and for backup target as well. So, we use it basically for everything.

We use ONTAP to take care of the filers. We have quite a few filers and we use it to increase and decrease storage and make new volumes. All the stuff we use Data ONTAP for makes managing all the filers very easy to take care of.

The reason that we use Data ONTAP for everything is that we have it on all of our systems, we have a lot of customers. We use it for our virtual environments in which we make a big data store. Our way to tell people is to just pop in VMs and they use it. We have a cloud environment and a lab environment. We either do NFS VM stores, people just pop in VMs or we put them on iSCSI, they connect to the VMs and poof they're there. We have NetApp and then the networking, so we're right on top as an oxygen service. It's used everywhere, production, development, whatever you got, we're there.

In terms of mission-critical applications, the first phase of migrating the legacy systems was to migrate all the mission- and business-critical applications to the new platform. The customer has a lot of legacy applications. Most of the mission-critical applications have been moved. The only mission-critical application that is left is the website application that the customer uses. Once that is done, all of the mission-critical applications will be in NetApp.
