A reliable backup solution that scales with your throughput
Pros and Cons
  • "Overall, scalability is great."
  • "This solution should cover more platforms, and there should be more product coverage."

What is our primary use case?

We are an integrator and this is one of the solutions that we supply to our customers. I do some of the training on this solution for our customers, as well, so I use it personally in that regard.

This is primarily used as a backup solution.

What needs improvement?

This solution should cover more platforms, and there should be more product coverage.

I think that the GUI should be improved because sometimes, not everything is properly displayed.

I would like to see better Fibre Channel support.

DDBoost is one of the most important features of the Data Domain appliance. The acronym stands for Data Domain Bandwidth Optimized OST, which gives the ability to distribute backup job tasks between DD and the host which writes to DD. This is called DSP - Distributed Segment Processing which is used during the backup process.

Another part of DDBoost, Clone Controlled Replication aka File Managed Replication, which is used on backup system site to easily replicate DDBoost created backup pieces of such. Lack of this functionality is, in my opinion, big limitation. When you consult interoperability matrices you will find (as an example of not full coverage)

1. No DDBoost support for Spectrum Space (former Tivoli Storage Manager) which claims market share higher than 15%

2. No support for Managed File Replication for Veeam Backup & Replication DD Boost over FC - which is one of the backup software leaders

The above are the most obvious examples on which I based my RFE to broaden the coverage.

FC improvements – I’d like to run DD replication over FC; if it would be possible then using DDBoost over FC and Replication over FC will remove the necessity for any data movement over IP. This solution would give us a clear separation between transport protocols used for management purposes (TCP) and those used for backup data transfer (FC).

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for more than seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In my opinion, the stability is very good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability depends on the model that you have. For each model, you have a limited number of terabytes per hours. It provides the option to scale as you need it. Overall, scalability is great.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have never needed to contact technical support personally.

How was the initial setup?

I have not personally performed a setup for a system that was going into production. For the environment that I was using, the initial setup was very simple.

What about the implementation team?

For the environment that I tried, I performed the implementation myself.

What other advice do I have?

My suggestion for anybody who is implementing this solution is to use the Fibre Channel, if possible. If not, then try to use it over IP. If you cannot use either then there are other options, but the Fibre Channel is preferred. It gives you not only an increased speed but also some additional features.

The biggest lesson that I have learned when working with this solution is that you can always do something better. I have been in the backup industry for more than twenty years, and there have been times when I was bored with the products. What I have found is that you can always expect to see something new, and something better.

I would rate this solution a ten out of ten.

Can stack backups on the servers, optimizing backup storage utilization
Pros and Cons
  • "DD Boost can stack backups on the servers, optimizing backup storage utilization. All resources are utilized efficiently. Without such optimization, backup processes can lead to bottlenecks or excessive resource utilization, impacting server services."
  • "Some competitors may not allow the use of DD Boost with their data management systems. The application process is not determined at the source site but on the estimation side."

What is our primary use case?

DD Boost offload processing tasks from the server to the Data Domain products. It enhances the backup process by providing the application's source and automation sites. This means servers' CPU and other resources are not heavily burdened during backups. All workloads are efficiently handled, improving the overall backup performance

How has it helped my organization?

DD Boost can stack backups on the servers, optimizing backup storage utilization. All resources are utilized efficiently. Without such optimization, backup processes can lead to bottlenecks or excessive resource utilization, impacting server services.

What is most valuable?

Many backup processes start on the source site, and DD Boost can stack backups on the servers, optimizing backup storage utilization. All resources are utilized efficiently. Without such optimization, backup processes can lead to bottlenecks or excessive resource utilization, impacting server services.

What needs improvement?

Some competitors may not allow the use of DD Boost with their data management systems. The application process is not determined at the source site but on the estimation side. If you use DD Boost with Data Domain on backups, standard value backup, any server or workload, a backup process, or server application servers, resources won't encounter any bottleneck issues.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using DD Boost for ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the solution’s stability a ten out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. You can install any backup server whenever you want. 300 users are using this solution.

How are customer service and support?

You can handle the basic support by yourself. The level of support you require also depends on your technical team's quality and skill level. However, global support is available for DD Boost implementation and integrated solutions.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

How was the initial setup?

DD Boost is designed to be compatible with various technologies and vendors. It is eligible for use with multiple applications, including Big Data domains, as it is a backup storage solution. DD Boost is straightforward, ensuring explicit integration with different backup software options. Whether utilizing competitors' software such as Commvault or IBM Spectrum Protect, DD Boost facilitates fast and efficient installation.

It's installed via the DHL plugin. We installed the AppServer, and some of the backup software vendors already included the plugin value installed on the backup software on the pickup server.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you enable DD boost and acquire the necessary license, data will be transferred directly to the Data Domain system at the destination site during the backup process. The workload or server resources involved in the backup won't be affected until a bottleneck occurs in the current environment. Improper configuration or implementation of DD Boost could potentially impact performance and the efficiency of backup and restore processes.

What other advice do I have?

The Data Domain has applications in technology. It's advantageous to have DD Boost integrated into the main order because it enhances the capabilities of the Data Domain. Boost can handle both backup and application processes efficiently. However, if you opt for Data Domain without Boost, there might be limitations on the installation side compared to using another vendor with different technologies.

Many backup software solutions support Data Domain, and it's straightforward to integrate. It only requires a plugin installed on the server side for backups.

DD Boost functionality varies depending on your backup software. Some backup software may offer it as a built-in feature or provide an easy-to-install plugin. Once enabled, it dynamically optimizes the backup process, improving efficiency. For instance, certain VPN software packages may already include this functionality.

Overall, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.
