We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The ability to embed, and dynamically repeat, templates within each other is a very simple yet extremely powerful tool.""Globally, the ability to create document templates in several formats by using a rich syntax is simple and clear to understand.""To generate these same tabular formatted reports with a code-only solution would have taken a lot longer to implement than the Docmosis template-based approach. Docmosis templates were easier to design as we were able to use Microsoft Word to create them. The templates made it easy to make any changes to reports and provided flexibility in our design approach.""A new report’s template creation is very often manipulation of a user’s layout of a report. A report can be ready in a day or less, once stored procedures are created as per sections in the report.""There is flexibility in laying out tables that is akin to UI front-end design.""Since our initial development, this feature has required very little maintenance. And when changes are requested, it is rather easy to change a Word document template and new staff can be quickly trained to modify a report."

"The most valuable features of IBM Cognos are governance and enterprise reporting.""The basic platform comes with several meta-modelling tools.""When it comes to decision-making, the product is very useful and used in many departments since a lot of people prefer the reports to be generated by IBM Cognos.""Mapbox integration for geospatial analytics down to longitude/latitude layers.""The solution's most valuable feature is its ease of use, which makes it easily compatible with other tools.""The correlation analysis is excellent. It's one of the best that I have used to date.""We use the account statement report. When you use an account in HSBC, you receive various types of accounts, such as the stock market, fixed accounts, credit cards, and business accounts. We can create one consolidated report called CCS support, which includes all these accounts. In that statement, we are consolidating all those accounts.""IBM Cognos is an excellent solution for tax, planning, budgeting, profit and loss statements and balance sheets."

Cons
"The challenge in usage when we developed the reports four years ago was the limited logic that can be applied to manipulate and display data. That functionality was largely transferred over to the database layer in creating the data output that was to be displayed.""We are facing new challenges such as internationalization. The next big challenge will be to offer even more date formats and numbers that cover the majority of countries. It will be to also think about features, such as number to text conversion, or the reverse which is currently only available in English but is in great demand by our international customers.""Version control and restricted access to some users for template editing could be a useful addition.""It would be great to have improved diagnostic and debugging tools. When report templates are complex, sometimes any minor modification needs to be thoroughly tested to ensure that it does not disrupt a previously designed template."

More Docmosis Cons →

"IBM Cognos's error messages seem to be a bit ambiguous. An error will be encountered and a message will be sent out very ambiguous and after investigating the error message it could be any number of issues. There was never a direct answer to the question or a direct answer to the error messages. Sometimes it would be a generic error message for 21 different solutions. It wasn't very specific, which required a lot of digging around and trial and error trying to fix the problem. The messaging in their error messaging is something needing improvement.""I would like for the platform to become more standard. If we make a development on our report and our dashboard, it will not be used in another solution. That means there is no portability for the developers.""IBM Support can be slow at times, but they can usually deliver in a timely manner.""It would be nice to offer free online training on the tool for end-users.""It could have more options for themes.""Chart quality: many other competitors have charts and graphics that look much better and that provide dynamic effects. Cognos doesn't.""Cognos is quite slow - it's missing the performance of the PowerPlay cubes.""One key area for improvement is the need to improve the self-service nature and functionality of the product in terms of visual analytics."

  • "The pricing and licensing policies are comparatively cheaper than other products in the market ."
  • "IBM Cognos offers competitive pricing similar to other BI vendors in the market."
  • "Pricing should be improved."
  • "The pricing of this product is meant for medium to large-scale enterprises."
  • "It is my understanding that the cost is very low. It's not very expensive."
  • "Cognos is super expensive compared to Tableau ($70/month) and Power BI ($20/month) — I think Cognos is roughly $200 a month."
  • "It is quite pricy. I think Microsoft BI is cheaper. Tableau might also be cheaper, but it also depends on the usage. If you have very many users, Cognos can be a problem. It could be cheaper than Tableau but not for so many users. If you have a few thousand users, Tableau, which is generally quite expensive, can be cheaper than Cognos."

    Reviews from Real Users

IBM Cognos stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. Two major ones are its powerful analysis tool and its reporting capabilities.

Prasad B., a senior software engineer at a financial services firm, notes, “The product is a very good reporting tool and is very flexible. It allows for the users to get a scheduled report. We can receive automated reports as well. They are easy to schedule on a weekly or monthly basis. It is very fast. I mean in means of report output, it's very fast compared to the actual clients involved.”
