Elasticsearch is developed in Java and is released as open source under the terms of the Apache License. Elasticsearch is the second most popular enterprise search engine. Shay Banon created Compass in 2004. Elasticsearch BV was founded in 2012 to provide commercial solutions around Elasticsearch and related software.
