Everything that concerns creative work, getting to express what I have in my mind visually, and anything that concerns rapid prototyping is how I use Figma.
Recently, I took part in a hackathon where I used Figma for rapid prototyping to build a solution that aimed to solve the issues of waste management in Cameroon. Figma helped me in three ways: first, it allowed me to collaborate with my team members; second, it helped me visualize what I had in mind in a way that made sense; and third, it gave me a lot of tools that helped me give a visual meaning to the particular solution we found. So that is how I use Figma for rapid prototyping, and at the end, we were able to win first place at that hackathon, which I was really glad about.
Using Figma in that hackathon made a difference for my team because we were all already used to the tool, so we chose it as the best option. We were a bit biased when it came to choosing a particular tool since Figma has been our go-to for different collaborations.
I can add that there is a cool new feature introduced by Figma recently that allows you to transform images into vectors, and I was able to use that feature to generate custom illustrations that matched our brand. That is something specific I can recall from that particular encounter.
The best features Figma offers, in my experience, are mostly the AI-powered features, including image generation, background removal, image resolution booster, and image vector feature. Figma comes with a lot of hands-on shortcut keys that allow me as a designer to make abstraction of the tool and just focus on the creative work, which is solving problems.
Out of those features, right now I find myself using image generation the most. It is quite powerful.
Something remarkable about Figma is the fact that the team is working relentlessly on making sure that designers do not lack anything. They constantly update and provide a lot of hands-on tools. At the end of the day, I feel that I do not really have to leave the tool to do all this creative work. I can get from the idea to a working prototype on Figma without thinking about any other tool.
Positively, Figma has impacted my organization a lot because it is our main source of truth when it comes to designing and keeping track of our branding. Anything that concerns creative work has been done on Figma.
I have in mind that if there was a way Figma could build something that will enable designers to quickly move from an idea to having it generated on the canvas in a way that reflects exactly what I had in mind in the fastest way possible, that would be great. If it were possible to get what I have in mind, an idea for a particular design, and make it in such a way that it just comes into Figma, that would be ideal.
Typing a prompt to express what I have in mind is quite complicated. There might be certain things I might not necessarily know how to explain in a way that a chatbot would understand. Being able to spot exactly what I have in my mind and just put it out there into Figma canvas would be a great game changer.
I have been using Figma for about five to six years.
In the past, I used Adobe Photoshop for visual design, but I rapidly found out that there was an issue with real-time collaboration with other people. When I switched to Figma, it was a huge relief because from then on, I could triple my workflow. In the past, I used WhatsApp to communicate. For instance, if I was working on the homepage and another designer was working on the notification page on a mobile app design, I had to constantly go back and forth with communication using WhatsApp, and it was very hectic. The collaboration that way was really hectic. When I switched to Figma, everything was very improved because I could easily observe what everybody was doing within one Figma file instead of constantly chatting about what I should do and what others were currently doing. That saved me a lot of time.
I mostly use Figma, but I do not know how Figma was set up within my organization. I was added to the organization as a designer and I am just working. I do not have that insight. My review rating for Figma is nine out of ten.
