Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It is a stable solution with reliable performance.""The valuable feature of the solution is the technical aspects, focusing on elements like processor infinity.""You can increase resources with it automatically.""IBM PowerVM has the highest clock speed.""Managing other operating systems is also straightforward with IBM PowerVM.""We always recommend PowerVM to our customers; it is better than most solutions.""It's in English, so its exceptional qualities make the control environment more flexible, easier, more stable, and easy to recover after issues.""The most valuable feature is the flexibility in terms of managing the hardware resources such as RAM, CPU, and the network."

More IBM PowerVM Pros →

"The product is easy to manage.""The level of statistical performance data that it can confirm in real-time is extremely useful. I can see what my VM’s hosts and guests are doing from a single pane of glass and identify issues before they would otherwise become apparent.""We are suggesting Nutanix to the management because of scalability and time efficiency.""Prism Central allows managing the cluster from a single pane of glass, and it allows a deeper dive into the solution.""It is less expensive than VMware products. It is also a little bit more flexible, but it really comes down to price for us.""The simplicity when it comes to building your own automation has been excellent.""Karbon is a must-have as it drastically simplifies the deployment of Kubernetes.""The configuration is easy, and it's flexible."

Cons
"The solution is quite pricey.""Any improvements that can be made in the interface will go a long way to helping us work better.""IBM PowerVM could improve the price because it is expensive.""The product's pricing could be less expensive compared to other competitors.""I don't know whether this has been trialed already, but IBM should give us an alert when we reach seven or eight failovers so that we can automatically switch it to manual mode. That would be great because if we cross the 10-day licensing limit, we have to pay a hefty license cost to Oracle. If IBM could view that feature, it would be helpful in license compliance.""IBM PowerVM does not integrate with Microsoft.""To make it a ten, I would like for them to add automation and configuration tools in order to help use the manager.""The interface is not user-friendly in places, so it could use some improvement."

More IBM PowerVM Cons →

"The cost of the solution is too expensive. There are other options, such as VMware, that are offered for less money. In Latin America, it seems to be overpriced for the market.""The licensing cost could be lower.""The One-Click Upgrade process could/should offer the ability to integrate with 3rd party drivers. For example, we use NVIDIA Grid graphics cards. It would be amazing if, during the One-Click Upgrade process, we could "slipstream" additional VIB drivers for ESXi into the upgrade process.""The reporting feature isn't very good.""It's lacking in some features but overcompensating in others.""This solution offers excellent functionality but could use a stronger interface.""The latency needs improvement""While their overall Nutanix Bible is good, they are lacking good descriptions for particular scenarios that might be helpful to many users."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The price varies from case to case and you have to negotiate it for every project."
  • "The license cost is bundled with IBM Power Systems as it is limited to RISC-based IBM systems only."
  • "IBM PowerVM costs more than other products but the customer does not need to pay additional money for the licenses. In VMware, you need to license everything. With IBM PowerVM it is unlimited and all-inclusive in the price you pay."
  • "The price of the solution could improve, it is expensive."
  • "We have to purchase the product's licenses."
  • "The solution is expensive."
  • "The pricing for PowerVM is on the higher. Regarding the license, it can be on a monthly or annual basis, depending on the deal. Customers may choose to pay annually, one-time, or monthly based on their agreement with the sales team. As for additional costs, customers need to pay for support if they opt for it. If not, they only pay for the hardware cost as per the agreement."
  • More IBM PowerVM Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Able to grow with smaller, more linear increments of investment"
  • "The basic license that comes with the box allows basic virtualization features but advanced automation features would require an upgrade of licenses."
  • "I know Nutanix and VxRail have similar prices and licenses. Nutanix is a go-ahead if AHV is used as hypervisor because it is already embedded in the price."
  • "While cost may seem higher than your traditional 3-tier architecture, you need to look at the bigger picture. You're not just buying hardware here. You're buying a complete environment."
  • "Setup cost is minor, pricing is quite a bit (we have a 7-node-cluster for about 450K EUR with 2 vGPU-nodes for Citrix) but that includes hardware, software, and support."
  • "The price is good but I think there is still room for improvement on the price."
  • "Extra features should not be so expensive. We would love to be able to use or even just try some of the extra features without having to buy them. Buying those features is just as expensive as buying vSphere licenses, so the cost savings is nullified."
  • "Work close with your InfraTeam and discuss with Nutanix the best way to achieve sizing and price that are right for you."

I urge all to look past the hot air and hype frenzy that are going on, because in the end, the HC platforms have to be aligned and congruent to the organization’s data architecture and business plans. The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
