We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Even while a user is using a cube for reporting, there will not be a situation as ' Cube file locked; unable to build or deploy'.""The most valuable features are Report Development (Functionality) and Information Distribution (Flexibility).""Dashboarding, reporting, and ad hoc reporting are the valuable features of IBM Cognos.""The most valuable features of IBM Cognos are governance and enterprise reporting.""The most valuable feature of IBM Cognos is security. The solution has updated features that other competitors' solutions come out with long after IBM Cognos has had them.""Cognos is the best application with dashboards, batch reporting, jobs, events and ad-hoc reporting for business users.""It is a stable product.""Mapbox integration for geospatial analytics down to longitude/latitude layers."

More IBM Cognos Pros →

"All features are valuable. It is very user-friendly, and it is mostly drag-and-drop. If we have the dataset available, then we can develop any dashboard very quickly.""The initial setup is quick and easy and you don't need special outside assistance to set everything up.""The most valuable features are the visualizations, the way they show the combination charts.""It has a shallow learning curve and so you can go to market very, very, very quickly.""It's easy to use.""Tableau is easy to use.""A valuable feature of Tableau is that it is a useful tool for small setups. I shuffle between Tableau and MicroStrategy, so I use Tableau for personal purposes more than enterprise. I like the light version of Tableau for personal usage and doing some use cases on my own. When it comes to something small, I use Tableau for setups, rather than any other tool.""This service is the combination of very pleasant, interactive graphical visualizations along with the application of advanced statistical models (in some cases)."

More Tableau Pros →

"We find the access restrictions on different user groups valuable.""Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten...The deployment process of TIBCO Jaspersoft is easy.""The feature that I like most is the drag and drop capability.""The growth time is the most valuable feature of TIBCO Jaspersoft.""I give the stability of the solution a nine out of ten.""The end-user reporting is very handy and the standard reports that can be achieved by using Jaspersoft Studio are quite impressive.""It's easy to use and maintain.""With the online view, it's easier to create Ad Hoc reports. It has inbuilt reports so we can easily get data from the system and customize the fields."

More TIBCO Jaspersoft Pros →

Cons
"Extending dynamic cubes aggregate awareness with calculated measures.""The technical support team’s response time is slow and needs to be improved.""IBM Support can be slow at times, but they can usually deliver in a timely manner.""The solution seems to slow down the servers.""The visualization aspect needs to be improved and I believe, this is being resolved in upcoming versions.""We need more predictive analytical functions, not only diagnostic or decryptic analytics.""The performance is a bottleneck and something that can be improved.""This product could use improvement in terms of usability for those with less technical know how."

More IBM Cognos Cons →

"It needs a little bit more advanced modeling. I would like to see functionality like Cognos has in the Framework Manager.""It would be nice to include more features on each dashboard.""The cost of owning the solutions from Tableau is much higher compared to any other analytical solutions.""The charts need to be improved. The drawings and the visualization need to be more accurate.""The data processing in Tableau is pathetic compared to Qlik.""There are not enough language options. It needs to be offered in more than just English.""I have used Power BI as well as Tableau. There are a couple of interesting features that I like in Power BI, but they are not present in Tableau. For example, in Power BI, if I am looking at country-wise population, I can type and ask for the country that has the maximum population, and it will automatically give an answer and address that query. This kind of feature is not there in Tableau. Similarly, in Power BI, for integrating with the latest ML algorithms, we have decision trees and primarily multiple machine learning algorithms. The decision tree essentially visualizes the patterns in the data. We don't have such a feature in Tableau. If Tableau can integrate with the machine learning algorithms and help us to do visualizations, it would be a wonderful combination. Most of the people are going for Tableau primarily for visualization purposes. However, in the data science industry, users want to do model building as well as tell a story. As of now, Tableau is fulfilling the requirements for visualization purposes. If they can bring it up to a level where I can use it for machine learning purposes as well as for visualization, it would be very helpful. Many people who want to do data science don't want to write a code. Tableau is anyway a drag and drop tool, and if they can provide those options as well, it will be a powerful combination.""There could be improvements on the mobile application, it is lacking features."

More Tableau Cons →

"TIBCO Jaspersoft would benefit from enabling you to run multiple reports in one file and incorporating more options related to multiple reports.""A better focus should be put on self-service reporting.""There might be some compatibility issues with the dashboard if we're using the latest version and some clients are using the older version. Some features might not be supported.""I would like to see better support for big data.""Customization is an area with certain shortcomings in the solution that needs improvement.""Currently, JSON format is the main format we use, however, in TIBCO Jaspersoft, XML format is the default and JSON did not work because TIBCO did not fix it.""The upgrades are not easy.""The reporting templates have room for improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "There is need to assess the purchase license accordingly so as to avoid audit penalties."
  • "The pricing and licensing policies are comparatively cheaper than other products in the market ."
  • "IBM Cognos offers competitive pricing similar to other BI vendors in the market."
  • "Pricing should be improved."
  • "The pricing of this product is meant for medium to large-scale enterprises."
  • "It is my understanding that the cost is very low. It's not very expensive."
  • "Cognos is super expensive compared to Tableau ($70/month) and Power BI ($20/month) — I think Cognos is roughly $200 a month."
  • "It is quite pricy. I think Microsoft BI is cheaper. Tableau might also be cheaper, but it also depends on the usage. If you have very many users, Cognos can be a problem. It could be cheaper than Tableau but not for so many users. If you have a few thousand users, Tableau, which is generally quite expensive, can be cheaper than Cognos."

  • "Best advice on pricing is to anticipate the desire for more licenses once the results of this product are acknowledged in other parts of your company."
  • "Paying for users you never setup or buying expensive desktop licenses for users who can solve their users with web editing on the server are the two biggest expenses."
  • "Buy 50 at a time. Project your use base every three months, and project your requirements forward."
  • "Tableau can be costly (but this can be indefinable, such as user experience vs. cheaper etc.)"
  • "I wish there was more of a subscription model with the pricing when it comes to Tableau, so you can get all the latest version upgrades/features if you pay monthly/annually."

IBM Cognos Business Intelligence provides a wide range of tools to help you analyze your organization's data. IBM Cognos BI allows businesses to monitor events and metrics, create and view business reports, and analyze data to help them make effective business decisions.

IBM Cognos applies techniques to describe, summarize, and compare data, and draw conclusions. This allows users to see trends and discover anomalies or variances that may not be evident by simply reading data. Data sources that contain information from different areas of a business can be stored in separate packages. Users can see only information that they have been granted access to, based on their group or role.

IBM Cognos BI consolidates the following business intelligence functions into a single web-based solution:

    • IBM Cognos Insight: Create personal and managed workspaces for data analysis. Using these interactive workspaces, you can share insight results with managers. Cognos Insight supports write-back, and you can also use these workspaces to capture and integrate management goals, commitments, and forecasts.

Cognos Analytics provides cognitive and managed self-service, enabling you to gain insights from controlled and trusted data.

In addition, report authors can reuse report objects to apply filters, fields, and styles to reports. Users can set the language of the user interface and report content according to the user's native language.

    • IBM Cognos Event Studio: Receive notifications of events that occur within your organization in real time. Event Studio enables the creation of agents that detect the occurrence of business events, failures, or anomalies, based on the change of specific events or data conditions. Notification can be sent via email, publication in the portal, or by triggering reports.

    • IBM Cognos Connection: This is the Web portal for IBM Cognos BI and is the central area for accessing all the IBM Cognos functions. In the web portal, users can schedule and distribute reports, create tasks, administer the server and the access permissions, and more.
