Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Cloud Foundry builds the runtime environment directly without requiring dependency management from the user.""My favorite component of IBM's solution is Node-RED, which greatly shortens the amount of time required to develop, test, and deploy new applications.""IBM is the only vendor to offer integration with blockchain for smart contract development."

More Cloud Foundry Pros →

"Overall, the solution's security throughout the stack and software supply chain is excellent.""The most valuable feature of OpenShift is the security context constraint (SCC). The solution’s security throughout the stack is good. And security context constraints provide port-level security. It's a granular level of control, where you can give privileges to certain users to work on certain applications.""What I like best about OpenShift is that it can reduce some of the costs of having multiple applications because you can just move them into small container applications. For example, applications don't need to run for twenty days, only to be used up by Monday. Through OpenShift, you can move some of the small applications into any cloud. I also find the design of OpenShift good.""This solution is providing a platform with OOTB features that are difficult to build from scratch.""We want to build a solution that can be deployable to any cloud because of client requirements and OpenShift allows us to do this.""The solution provides a lot of flexibility to the application team for running their applications in the container platform, without needing to monitor the entire infrastructure all the time. It automatically scales and automatically self-heals. There is also a mechanism to alert the team in case it is over-committing or overutilizing the application.""Valuable features include auto-recreate of pod if pod fails; fast rollback, with one click, to previous version.""OpenShift facilitates DevOps practices and improves CI/CD workflows in terms of stability compared to Jenkins."

More OpenShift Pros →

"The dynamic vertical scaling is a unique feature.""The solution is scalable, and that is what we are looking at. There is no learning curve as we have not done much research.""The advanced level of production-ready Docker hosting, one-click application deployment, and the truly flexible pricing.""The control is valuable. It's really easy to use and you have good control of your solutions.""Technical support from Jelastic is very good."

More Virtuozzo Application Platform Pros →

Cons
"After the initial excitement period with Node-RED is over, you crave the need of additional integrations to third-party services.""In IBM Cloud, the product has been deprecated in favor of Kubernetes, which is a more complicated infrastructure to manage."

More Cloud Foundry Cons →

"It would be great if it supported Bitbucket repositories too.""OpenShift could be improved if it were more accessible for smaller budgets.""If we can have a GUI-based configuration with better flexibility then it will be great.""Not a ten because it's not a standard solution and the endpoint protection user has to prepare with documentation or have training from other people. It's not easy to start because it's not like other solutions.""I want easier node management and more user-friendly scripts for installing master and worker nodes.""It could use auto-scaling based on criteria such as transaction volume, queue backlog, etc. Currently, it is limited to CPU and memory.""I think that OpenShift has too many commands for running services from the CLI, and the configuration files are a little complicated.""The solution needs to support the new features in Kubernetes more quickly."

More OpenShift Cons →

"For now, some customers are requesting support of Docker containers for Windows.""The security layers also need to be improved because there is no clear layer or tier of security in the solution.""Lacks better integration into enterprise storage products.""The backup features need improvement, or rather it should be added, as I could not find it.""The backup functionality needs to be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "IBM has a free tier and payment option depending on the products selected."
  • "You are allocated a minimum amount of resources in the free tier. This seems fair and highly scalable, as you pay per usage as per cloud pricing schemes."
  • "The pricing models should be reworked to the needs of a wider range of companies. Some customers will not be able to afford it until quite a few years into production, even after good PoC results and a successful launch."
  • More Cloud Foundry Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "I don't deal with the cost part, but I know that the cost is very high when compared to other products. They charge for CPU and memory, but we don't worry about it."
  • "We had a Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) license for all our servers' operating systems. By having multiple Red Hat products together, you can negotiate costs and leverage on having a sort of enterprise license agreement to reduce the overall outlay or TCO."
  • "Pricing of OpenShift depends on the number of nodes and who is hosting it."
  • "Depending on the extent of the product use, licenses are available for a range of time periods, and are renewable at the end of the period."
  • "We are currently using the open version, OKD. We plan to get the enterprise version in the future."
  • "The licensing cost for OpenShift is expensive when compared to other products. RedHat also charges you additional costs apart from the standard licensing fees."
  • "This solution is fairly expensive but comes at an average cost compared to other solutions in the market."
  • "The model of pricing and buying licences is quite rigid. We are in the process of negotiating on demand pricing which will help us take advantage of the cloud as a whole."
  • More OpenShift Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Pricing for providers is revenue-shared based. Providers should invest in hardware to set up the Jelastic cluster."
  • "I would rate the cost 3 out of 5. There are additional costs other than licensing fees."
