Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The UTM feature is quite good. FortiAP is easy to deploy because both Fortigate and FortiAP are under the same brand. Otherwise, you need to do more work on the configuration.""It's very fast and easy to configure.""This solution has solid UTM features combined with a nice GUI.""The IPsec tunnels are very easily created, and quite interoperable with devices from other vendors.""The license management is very valuable. You can get a new license each year, or you can enroll every two to four years. You can get the logs, and you will get the information on the risk in your network and the entire organization. With this information, you can take action on your actives, computers, or devices. You can bring your own device as an SSE.""FortiGate is very simple to manage and easy to use.""The scalability of Fortinet FortiGate is good.""Valuable features include the Web Application Firewall, and it even has DLP (data leak prevention)."

"The filtering was very good.""Firewalls help us a lot in controlling traffic on our network and preventing unauthorized access.""The most valuable feature for us was to implement negligent functionality, to direct functionality to viewer control and application control so we could disconnect, and at the same time, we installed checkpoints. We disconnected our proxy.""The most outstanding feature is being able to centralize each of the functions in a single device.""It safeguards against cyber attacks.""It provides visibility and drives organizational security.""We can create a domain to separate and segregate some functions, some services.""The databases and its signatures are its most important features."

"The most valuable feature is the automatic scaling. With its microservices, it scales both up and down, depending on traffic and throughput.""ShieldX has been designed from the very beginning to work well in cloud environments. It understands autoscaling, automation, and auto-configuration. These are the things which are important in today's operating environment.""We were able to see what devices are talking to each other, giving us more visibility.""...It takes the exact same policies that you would apply to your on-premise environment and enables you to simply apply them to the cloud. It becomes one policy for both on-prem and for the cloud.""The UI was also one of the huge selling points. My web development manager was blown away with the detail and the granularity that you can get out of the UI. It is a very strong and informative UI, with the amount of data it provides.""The Adaptive Intention Engine is fantastic. It allows us to develop security policies using the language of our internal customers. It's machine-learning applied to security workflows. That allows us to much more easily construct the policies that will protect those workflows.""It has helped us tighten our security posture. Now, staff can only access things that they should be accessing."

Cons
"I would suggest that Fortinet add sandboxing to their solution.""It would be ideal if they had some sort of GUI interface for troubleshooting and diagnostics.""The support is the main thing that needs to be improved.""We would like to see a better training platform implemented.""Fortinet FortiGate can be integrated with different platforms. They have integrations in place, but I can't say they're 100%.""A lack of integration between our data centers.""With the addition of some features, it is possible that FortiGate can be used in all verticals.""The central management for the FortiGate Fortinet Firewall needs improvement. They have the manager to do the essential management for both SD-WAN and for the security policy. They should also improve the SD-WAN function."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"The interface needs improvement.""What has been the issue of firewalls is they ask me for policies and content filtering application control and all these features that are now part of Harmony.""Technical support was very bad because the supplier who sold it to us, wasn't very supportive, and he wouldn't giving us direct links to the OEM.""While the technical support is good, the Indian level technical support could use an upgrade.""As we don't have a representative of Check Point in Mozambique, this makes it very difficult when we have some issues to resolve.""Specifically on the user experience, sometimes the set up of things, such as the VPN SSL, takes a lot of time to load and a lot of time to get up and running on every session.""Some features that could be improved are advanced threat protection, sandboxing, and vulnerability management.""I am not able to see a demo."

More Check Point UTM-1 [EOL] Cons →

"With any kind of tool like ShieldX, where you're in the cloud instead of a traditional firewall, you're using CPU resources in those environments to provide the protection. So there's a cost associated with CPU resources. I'm pressing upon them to make the product much more efficient and use less CPUs to do the same thing.""I would like better reports and in-depth reporting.""We are having some issues with their LDAP and integrating it with the Active Directory. We can't seem to set it up.""There should be a bit more customer care, with regular review meetings on it or regular reports. It would be nice to have a quarterly or biannual review of what ShieldX has blocked.""They need to be consistent in performance and capabilities over time, given the fact that this is new and I want to see where this goes in the next year or so. As the vendor continues to evolve and add future functionality, we want to make sure that we are still keeping up with the integrations, etc. Time will be the key factor here. The proper support for some of the latest technologies, Docker containers, etc. They need to keep up with threat landscape, so we will see how the security get layered. This is what we are going to be keeping an eye on."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."

  • "The pricing is too high."
  • "This cost is between 3,000 and 5,000 euros per year, so some other solutions are cheaper and the pricing should be improved."

  • "ShieldX ensures that we can have the separation needed for our environment to avoid drastically increasing the cost on the licensing side. From this perspective, it's been very positive and helpful."
  • "We are very happy with the pricing and licensing. It's about getting a site-wide license. One of the challenges that we've had with our previous vendor had been the cost of licensing."
  • "We are actually expecting our costs to drop in the coming year, but it is just a matter of the licensing expiring. That is going to happen in the next six months or so. Then, we will start to see a decrease in overall spend."
  • "Security policies are now applied as applications are going up. Because it's automated, we don't have the three to four week delay. The insertion of applications in the cloud for us dropped from an average of three to four weeks to a couple of days."
  • "ShieldX also enables us to migrate to cloud environments faster. That is an important part of it for sure because it takes the exact same policies that we would apply to our on-premise environment and enables us to simply apply them to the cloud. It becomes one policy for both on-prem and for the cloud."
  • "For other security professions who are looking for something which is low in cost that does microsegmentation, they should look at ShieldX. It might not be the big name out there, but it does everything that you are looking for in microsegmentation at a very low price."
  • "For a three-year deal we paid £55,000 plus tax... But, and this is a big "but," this was over two years ago. ShieldX had only just hit the market. We were the first company in Europe to buy ShieldX."
