We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It makes it possible for us to back up our Unix machines without installing a host, client, or any client software. It gives us some peace of mind in regards to those servers getting backed up.""The most important features are the backup and the availability of the Universal Explorer. The in-transit compression is great.""The agentless backups are the big selling point on this, as well as being able to send out across sites so that I can do a restore at either of our two locations.""The best part of BDRSuite is how user-friendly it is and how it does not require any maintenance after the initial setup.""The most valuable feature is its ability to copy quickly. We have about 12 terabytes, and trying to copy that volume size through the file structure would take a week. BDRSuite has a different approach to copying and is much faster.""There is an option to back up a specific folder from a specific source, not the whole virtual machine.""Vembu provides us with a way to instantly recover data. It offers instant data recovery through a local backup server deployed at the customer's site. We can quickly recover data either by copying it back to the main server or if the backup server is powerful enough, we can also directly start a virtual machine from the backup.""BDRSuite can help organizations save time and money by automating backup and recovery processes and reducing the need for manual intervention."

More BDRSuite Pros →

"The most valuable feature is the ability to navigate inside a backup point to look for a specific folder or data you want to recover.""The solution is useful for taking backups for end-user laptops and end-user workstations where data is involved.""Veeam is very useful for the Hyper-V environment.""I love Veeam because it is very easy to work with.""The solution is meeting all of our client's requirements. It has good performance.""Technical support is good. They're very responsive. It depends on the timezone responding, but I usually get a response within three hours of creating a ticket.""The initial setup was straightforward. It was very easy. Deployment only took about one hour with configuration and everything considered.""The most valuable feature is the ease of use."

Cons
"There's a feature that does syncing with AWS Cloud backup online. It's not that straightforward to get it set up.""Maybe they can add some features regarding working with the vCenter cluster to be able to have more power over the cluster overall, not just over a single or specific host. Also, I would like some enhancements in technology for the web interface, e.g., some interactive technologies to advance the interface of Vembu. Although the current interface is very good, maybe they can use more advanced technologies for its web development.""It is very easy, unless you know exactly what you're doing, to corrupt the virtual machines and they get locked up. Just brief detail: When you are creating a system, if you don't have absolutely every other little background processes in place, it creates Snapshots of the virtual machines. Once it does that, it then won't be able to have a backup. From that point on you have to destroy the virtual machine, which is completely counterproductive on a large system. There is a fundamental flaw in the setup that can be very dangerous, potentially.""There was one issue though with the hardware IDs. When I went to a different version of Hyper-V, the hardware IDs weren't restored and the machine got two new IDs. The preliminary unique IDs weren't restored, so I had to reactivate programs.""They had a good product and tried to change things by going to a different product. They should have tried to stay with a product that is a proven solution and successful.""What I would love to see on the dashboard are graphs, per backup job. I want to see the month and the days in it... If a job has failed, when did it actually fail and what percentage of it failed? Did it fail completely, 75 percent or 100 percent or did it only fail partially?""I have not been impressed by the data compression of the backup images. They seem to take up nearly as much space on the backup drive as they do on the server.""There are some limitation in Vembu that can be improved. When you take the backup from any server, the full incremental backup is limited. For example, if you run a weekly full backup and monthly backup, they cannot be run at the same time. I should not have to create a new job, but in this scenario, I am creating two jobs. The limitation is created because if I select monthly backup, then I cannot select weekly backup."

More BDRSuite Cons →

"It is not always easy to update this solution to the newer version, so the update process needs to be improved.""I can't think of anything that may be missing.""It fulfills our needs in terms of features. In terms of improvements, they can maybe improve its documentation.""If they could let you can do replication to physical servers - a backup from physical servers and a replication to physical servers - that will be better.""We need some sort of security for backups and archives.""Updating and configuration can sometimes be a little bit of a hassel, but once you know the product better it is easy to use.""I would like to see the ability for incremental backups and reverse backups.""They should improve the solution's automation features."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The product's pricing is a good value. Vembu is cost-effective versus using VMware Essentials. Regarding licensing, make sure you find the right workstation or server that you're going to install it on, and know the number of sockets it has, since the price depends on that."
  • "It is very cost efficient, effective. I’d say it's one-third the cost of Veritas when compared to the server backups. I even tried image backups on Acronis, but Acronis is very expensive. So these are some of the key reasons why I opted for it."
  • "We were able to take advantage of a promotional pricing campaign."
  • "The pricing structure is in line with other solutions. However, the option to replicate offsite to a unit at another office or at home is a big cost benefit. Instead of paying monthly for cloud storage, you replicate offsite for free."
  • "Pricing is fair enough. What was not clear enough in the documentation on the website was that that you're licensing per CPU socket and you are only licensing on the restore sockets, not the backup sockets. It's a bit technical, but it was very well explained during the demonstration that we had during the evaluation period."
  • "I prefer the way Vembu is licensed. When you look at Veeam or any other product, they price per node. Vembu is licensed per host. You just buy a host license and it backs up unlimited VMs within that host. The others charge per VM."
  • "Vembu is too expensive because they don't really have small-business pricing. This is a matter of personal opinion. They're going to tell you that they have competitive pricing because there are more expensive solutions in the marketplace, but there are better solutions in the marketplace that are more expensive. Their product is a better fit for small businesses, but they don't price it that way."
  • "The product's pricing is of good value. It was much more affordable than the alternative solution to it, which was Veeam. That would be the closest competitor, and between those two, Vembu was much more affordable. It seemed reasonable for what we needed to do."

  • "Our licensing fees are on a yearly basis."
  • "Pricing is based on license packaging and duration. Longer term licenses are less per year and license packages also offer a discount."
  • "There are costs in addition to the standard licensing fees, and pricing can be a disadvantage or a weakness for this solution."
  • "We purchased a three-year license, and I think that the prices are ok."
  • "The pricing is good."
  • "The licensing fees are billed on a yearly basis, and the fees are much lower than what I pay for NetBackup."
  • "The pricing model is based on CPU and must be declared as Microsoft or VMware licensing."
  • "We have a cloud provider agreement with Veeam. We are also paying for the agent."
