Enables seamless integration and data preparation with robust transformation capabilities
Pros and Cons
- "AWS Glue's most valuable features include its transformation capabilities, which provide data quality and shape for processing in ML or AI models."
- "In the building and deployment aspects, there is room for improvement. The current process is a bit complicated and could benefit from being more user-friendly and simpler, which would help speed up the deployment process."
What is our primary use case?
AWS Glue is primarily used as an integration tool to facilitate serverless integration with various services. It supports ETL jobs, data pipeline connections, and Amazon S3 data lakes. AWS Glue is instrumental for data preparation and serves as an engine connecting data pipelines to services like Kinesis. It is heavily utilized in AI-driven projects for data preparation.
What is most valuable?
AWS Glue's most valuable features include its transformation capabilities, which provide data quality and shape for processing in ML or AI models. It offers transformation options on canvas or through ETL pipelines, notebooks, and code. Additionally, it supports data preparation, cleaning, and filtering seamlessly. AWS Glue also enhances job scheduling and orchestration capabilities, integrating with AWS Glue Studio for comprehensive data workflow management.
What needs improvement?
In the building and deployment aspects, there is room for improvement. The current process is a bit complicated and could benefit from being more user-friendly and simpler, which would help speed up the deployment process.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with AWS Glue for approximately one and a half to two years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
AWS Glue deployment takes about two hours from setup, and it involves setting up pipelines that are then automated. The deployment process is more about data pipelines than code deployment, and it is crucial to use an AWS CI/CD pipeline for deployment.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
AWS Glue is highly stable, and I would rate its stability as nine. Once set up, it runs smoothly without common issues, and as a managed service, it reduces management burdens.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
AWS Glue is quite scalable, and I would rate its scalability as eight. It can easily handle data from one terabyte to 100 terabytes or more, scaling nicely with larger datasets.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup of AWS Glue is relatively straightforward, with good documentation available. While it can be complex, the documentation helps make it easier. I would rate the ease of setup as seven.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing for AWS Glue is on the higher side, and I would rate it a seven in terms of expense. The smallest cost for a project is around €700, while the largest can reach up to €7,000 based on the scale of the usage.
What other advice do I have?
I recommend users determine their performance goals and regularly measure metrics to identify and mitigate bottlenecks. AWS Glue autoscaling is effective for ETL, interactive sessions, and streaming jobs. I rate AWS Glue as an eight overall.
