Used for our private network and creating subnets
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution's subnetting feature is good and has impacted our network design."
  • "When we create instances without public IP, the paid services provided by the solution, NAT gateway, are costly."

What is our primary use case?

Amazon Virtual Private Cloud is the heart of the application, and we use it for our private network.

What is most valuable?

The solution's subnetting feature is good and has impacted our network design. We can create multiple machines with subnetting services. We can divide the CIDR with the help of subnets. It provides security, and we can create subnets in public and private.

What needs improvement?

When we create instances without public IP, the paid services provided by the solution, NAT gateway, are costly.

I rate the solution a nine out of ten for stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Around 50 users are using the solution in our organization.

I rate the solution’s scalability a nine out of ten.

How was the initial setup?

The solution’s initial setup is easy.

What about the implementation team?

It takes two or three hours to deploy Amazon Virtual Private Cloud.

What other advice do I have?

In our environment, we have public and private infrastructure. The public front-end applications are directly accessible to the client. In a private network, we use database machines, like RDS machines.

It's easy to set up security groups in the new versions of Amazon Virtual Private Cloud. AWS also provides options to create subnets with the solution. I would recommend the solution to other users. A client using AWS needs to create an Amazon Virtual Private Cloud.

Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Great stability and simple to define a networks, connect subnets, and set up routing
Pros and Cons
  • "It is very simple to define a network, connect subnets, and set up routing"
  • "It is a bit difficult to find things because you don't have a single pane of glass or dashboard for every resource."

What is our primary use case?

Our company uses the solution to define subnet EC2 instances and security groups. We also set up networks of instances and connect with some services.

What is most valuable?

It is very simple to define a network, connect subnets, and set up routing. It might be a bit tricky in the beginning, but once you learn how to do things it is very practical.

What needs improvement?

It is a bit difficult to find things because you don't have a single pane of glass or dashboard for every resource. You have to jump from one region to another. If you have an organizations, then you have to jump from one account to another. It is a bit difficult to move and have an overall view of resources within a complex organization.

A dashboard should list every resource or type without being limited to one region at a time. Every region or account should show for an organizational unit to provide a better view of what is running.  Jumping around and logging in or out to view resources wastes time because it requires multiple browser tabs in incognito mode.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have never experienced issues with stability like I have with other products. Stability is rated a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is rated an eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

I have not interacted with support about the solution specifically. I have interacted with them about the control tower and landing zone. Support is very good so is rated an eight out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The setup is simple. Once you learn the concept, you can move forward in a very straightforward way. Setup is rated a seven out of ten.

What about the implementation team?

We implement the solution in-house. Depending on the complexity, implementations take anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours.

What other advice do I have?

The solution is good but might be a bit complicated when you have many VPCs because you have to move back and forth between accounts.

I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Private Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Virtual Network solution that facilitates a private and secure environment that can be isolated from on-premises services
Pros and Cons
  • "The best feature is that you can run your servers directly on Amazon's premises, and have access to the internet without Amazon utilizing your own internet connection in your office."
  • "This solution is not fully compatible with every vendor that we use regarding firewalls and networking equipment. They provide you with the option and details on how to configure this on your premises but it would be good to have an easier way to do this."

What is our primary use case?

Amazon VPC's provides a cloud environment that can be private for any company. This means you can have services and servers running in a private environment, isolated from any services on prem. This gives you the capabilities of interconnecting specific services and ports to your internal network.

You are able to keep data in a secure environment where no one can access it without being responsible for the power consumption, cooling of hosts or a disaster recovery scenario. You can avoid any destructive situations. We are using a hybrid infrastructure in our own server room, in combination with cloud instances that we replicate in our zone in a secure way. We use encrypted panels from our premises to Amazon, transferring data and storing it safely.

What is most valuable?

The best feature is that you can run your servers directly on Amazon's premises, and have access to the internet without Amazon utilizing your own internet connection in your office. You can filter all the traffic and select only the relevant services and network traffic capacitor.

What needs improvement?

This solution is not fully compatible with every vendor that we use regarding firewalls and networking equipment. They provide you with the option and details on how to configure this on your premises but it would be good to have an easier way to do this.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a very stable solution with very little down time.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a scalable solution.

How are customer service and support?

Amazon is really hard to contact. Technically, I have not needed their support. On one occasion, we missed emails that referred to a failed payment due to a card cancellation. A couple of months later, our account was suspended and our servers were shut down as a result. It took us four to five hours to figure out how to fulfill the payment and proceed with the account enabling. The support at that time wasn't good. There wasn't a phone number that you could call directly and resolve the issue. We had to open a ticket and wait.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup can be complex depending on your needs but overall I would say that it is straightforward. From my experience, based on my needs, I can have a server running and VPN connected to our system in about an hour.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

This solution is quite expensive.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

At the time that we decided to use Amazon, the main competitor was Microsoft Azure. We decided to go with Amazon due to the lack of knowledge on how to do the same things using Azure.

What other advice do I have?

Minor issues that can have a major impact on a company's progress and work, can be prevented by using this solution.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Though Amazon Virtual Private Cloud is a leading tool in the market, Microsoft Azure's cloud services can be considered one of its competitors. Amazon Virtual Private Cloud is better than Microsoft Azure since it provides easy integrations, support, and multiple services.

How was the initial setup?

The product's initial setup phase is simple since my company manages it with the use of Terraform.

When it comes to Amazon Virtual Private Cloud, my company had opted for a canary deployment.

Compared to the other products in the market, Amazon Virtual Private Cloud is available at a low price.

What other advice do I have?

My company uses Amazon Virtual Private Cloud for our corporate data center.

The product has enhanced our company's operations activities since its network configuration is very handy, and in a few steps, our company can set it up between the microservices.

It is easy to integrate Amazon Virtual Private Cloud with AWS services.

I recommend the product to others who plan to use it.

I rate the tool a nine out of ten.
