SAP PowerDesigner Primary Use Case
SAP PowerDesigner is a tool that helps us create our database and monitor our data to reduce redundancy. I will provide a use case: currently, we are filling timesheets for people who are working in different kinds of offices. We arrange the numerical data into virtual data to show how much data is currently available and what kind of data is in each table, including its use. For example, a person named Ali swipes his ID card when he enters at 9:00 AM and leaves at 6:00 PM. All these details are generated in one database. We analyze timesheet details throughout the organization, focusing on the Hyderabad office, to identify how many people visited the office and how many did not. This information, stored in Oracle, allows us to merge details from various areas such as swipe card numbers and infrastructure details to create a structured data model that captures all available data. I define the business aspects of each table and column, such as the last updated timestamp, which indicates when an associate left the office. This use case helps business persons understand the expertise I provide.

View full review »In all the use cases, we are using SAP PowerDesigner to create data models. These data models are used to create data warehouse solutions. I'm always using SAP PowerDesigner in a scenario where, as a developer, I can model the structures and data flows, and then we use a code generator to generate the actual software from it.
For our specific scenario, the way we use SAP PowerDesigner has two factors. Since we are in a world where we do a lot of automation, the product, the software that you create, is generated based on the model. The model is automatically a documentation of your end product because it's the starting point for generating the software. One of the nice features of SAP PowerDesigner is that it's also able to generate reports, for example, to HTML, so you can provide the information that's in SAP PowerDesigner to all the users within your organization, whether they have a PowerDesigner license or not. This ability to generate documentation from SAP PowerDesigner is one of its nicest features.

This product helps us to handle documentation for travel expenses and calculate costs upon returning from a trip. It is a straightforward product with many applications. In PowerDesigner, I mainly use BPM and modeling standards, shifting to it for its capabilities in process and data modeling. I also explore data model generation and demo data creation.
We use the solution for LDM, PDM and scripts implemented in the database.
View full review »We use SAP PowerDesigner for logical data modeling and physical data modeling.
View full review »I have been creating physical, logical models for data warehousing for a major bank in the Czech Republic. We have been converting these physical models into external files, generating the DDLs for objects and then deploying objects into those environments. We have 20 users in our business who use this solution but there are additional users across various branches of the bank.
I was working with Bosch, where I was part of the enterprise data modelling team, and we used SAP PowerDesigner as a data modelling tool. We mainly concentrated on the manufacturing domain, so we followed the data modelling approach using Data Vault 2.0. So the organization told us to use SAP PowerDesigner as a data modelling tool. There are competitors for SAP PowerDesigner tools like Urban and many more, but our organization decided on SAP PowerDesigner. With this tool, a framework was designed by one of the organizations in Germany, and Bosch partnered with them to generate scripts automatically. SAP PowerDesigner also provides the flexibility to create logical and conceptual data models. As a team, we were mainly focused on creating physical data models using SAP PowerDesigner.
Once you create physical data models, you can check out the DDL scripts and implement them on your Oracle databases. We used Oracle databases, but SAP PowerDesigner supports a lot of databases.

View full review »We use this solution for business analysis and to generate use cases. Each model is developed based on all the requirements that are gathered. There's a small install for the setup on each machine and then we operate through a shared license server that is connected to it.
One of the things that I'm working on right now is improving the health of our models because a number of them are old. We're missing a lot of information that we need as we look towards an enterprise level data lake. This will allow us to better relate ownership of the data to a particular area within ODOT.

Additionally, it was used for documents and resources for the data warehouse. It was a resource and module company and we had to describe every source, table, et cetera.

I mainly use it to create application maps and to connect other applications to IOS platforms. Usually, we use PowerDesigner in order to study the impact of modifying columns and the cut-offs in order to deploy a new data model. I also use it to handle change requests on IS, for example, pushing data models or applying the follow-up on changes done directly on other IOS.

We are using the enterprise architect version of the solution, using the repository to create our enterprise models; different business models that include process to data models and application architecture models. From a dimension perspective it's like a business application with data and infrastructure. We have categories of different models and we use this tool. I model a lot of these into centralized repositories, so they can be used by internal staff to view all the models or to see the lineage and navigate through them, viewing the relationship between the models and staff.
In terms of modeling, we have large teams of around 50 to 60 people who have the license to show the different kinds of models in terms of system projects. For the web portal which allows viewing of the models, all users in our organization have access rights, meaning there are around 100 people that have access. The solution is used daily. We will likely carry out a review at the end of the year to see whether the current configuration is enough for us or whether we need to expand. We are customers of SAP and I'm a manager, data architecture.
I use PowerDesigner to take business requirements and model them from a data modeling perspective. We can then take the result and turn it into a physical model in a database like SQL Server or Oracle.

Often, a customer will want to migrate from another solution onto PowerDesigner. That's how I primarily use the solution: migrating things over to this solution.
We use it to set up the conceptual model. From there, we will take the physical model, where we can start the different DDLs. We will use it to generate the DDLs for the database teams to implement it.
