Provides robust data protection and immutability, but the solution can be quite slow
Pros and Cons
  • "You can peer into different levels of the archive."
  • "The solution can be quite slow."

What is our primary use case?

There are a couple of different use cases. One is a cheaper form of storage and also robust protection of data. We also use it for its immutability. If you have enough copies, then it will always be available.

What is most valuable?

Storage accounts are used for things like logic analyzers that feed into the different archives. It also feeds into Azure Backup. You can peer into different levels of the archive.

What needs improvement?

The solution can be quite slow.

Having some sort of caching algorithm could be quite good so that it is placed on the edge of the customer network. But this will lead you back to on-premise infrastructure, so it cannot fix the whole cloud.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Microsoft Azure Object Storage for a few years now, but it's very sporadic.

The most stable public cloud option available but needs to better integrate with other vendors
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution integrates well with Microsoft Office 365 and includes important features such as SIEM, storage, SQL, and Cosmos DB."
  • "A more comprehensive training option is needed."

What is our primary use case?

Our company is a managed service provider and we recommend the solution to customers.

What is most valuable?

The solution integrates well with Microsoft Office 365 and includes important features such as SIEM, storage, SQL, and Cosmos DB.

What needs improvement?

The solution should integrate better with other vendors and products.

A more comprehensive training option is needed.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for one month.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is pretty stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is very scalable.

How are customer service and support?

We provide technical support for our customers and raise any escalations directly to Microsoft.

The initial setup is somewhat complex. I provide the networking or underlay for services and other team members deploy the solution.

What about the implementation team?

We implement the solution for our customers.

What other advice do I have?

The solution and AWS are the most stable options in the public cloud domain so I recommend either depending on use case. A cost analysis will determine which option is the best fit.

Services are more feasible with one cloud provider as opposed to multiple cloud providers at the same time.

I rate the solution a six out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Data storage solution that offers scalability at a low cost and additional features compared to on premise solutions
Pros and Cons
  • "The file retention and object retention have been most valuable."
  • "Uploading files from the UI has presented some issues. When editing work and once you delete a file, it takes some time to recreate the same file."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution to store images and Excel files.

How has it helped my organization?

We used to use an on premise file system and the maintenance of on a premise server is difficult. This is why we migrated to Azure storage. Using this solution has reduced our maintenance time and cost.

What is most valuable?

The file retention and object retention have been most valuable.

What needs improvement?

Uploading files from the UI has presented some issues. When editing work and once you delete a file, it takes some time to recreate the same file. If I have an ABC file and if I delete it and I want to recreate the file again with the same name, it is not immediate. There is at a least 30 seconds or one-minute delay.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a scalable solution. We have specifically configured it for scalability.

How are customer service and support?

We have reached out for technical support but not directly related to Azure Storage. We had a Logic app and we tried to connect it to Azure Storage. They provided a solution but it was not a limitation of Azure Storage and rather a limitation of the Logic app.

I would rate the support for this solution a nine out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. We had no issues with the deployment because we used GitHub Action, Azure DevOps, terraforms as well as AMS scripts to build and deploy. Deployment did not take more than a minute.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have used a pricing calculator to find out the general pricing for our clients.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution to those who already have an on-premise file system and who want to migrate to a cloud-native solution. This solution offers scalability at a lower cost and additional benefits compared with an on-premise file server.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

Powerful, easy to use, and expands well
Pros and Cons
  • "It's easy to use."
  • "We're still testing the solution. It's too early to make any suggestions as to what may be missing."

What is our primary use case?

It's primarily used by our data science team. They use it to augment any of the works that they probably cannot do very well in KNIME.

What is most valuable?

It's a very powerful tool, however, we don't use it to the right level. We are still learning the tool. We have this very powerful engine that we are not yet utilizing to the next level. At the moment, we're just trying to see whether we have automated ML scripts that we can adopt to train a model, for example. Really we're using it for proof of concept. We haven't deployed anything to production.

It's easy to use.

What needs improvement?

We're still testing the solution. It's too early to make any suggestions as to what may be missing.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using the solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is quite good. there are no bugs or glitches and it doesn't crash or freeze, it is reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We've never had any problem with scaling. It is scalable. Being a government institution and having that contract signed at the government level, we just have to request additional resources or storage capacity. It's very good.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is very good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We initially started our journey on KNIME and we run KNIME side by side, so data scientists can have the ability to do their models either in Lime or, if they choose to, they can also do that in Azure.

How was the initial setup?

The solution is very easy to set up. It's not overly complex.

What about the implementation team?

We've got this Microsoft contract and we have round-the-clock Microsoft engineers who are able to actually assist us with any problems.

What other advice do I have?

We're customers and end-users.

It's a very powerful tool. I love the fact that Microsoft was really committed to improving it. Therefore, from the early days that we started using it, we can actually see that continuously there are changes and improvements. They do listen to their customers. They really try to make sure that they have a best-in-class product.

Microsoft would be very good for very big organizations. In terms of KNIME, the good thing is you can actually scale it down with a small organization that doesn't want to really go really big. They both work and they're complementary.

I would rate it eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Private Cloud

A secure object storage solution for the cloud with a useful regional set up for storage
Pros and Cons
  • "The best thing is it's on the cloud. It's easily accessible to everyone through a mobile device, tablet, or laptop. Secondly, it's secure. Like any URL shared will not work after a few hours. Only the person concerned who has that URL can use it within a few hours to download the document. After that, it expires. Thirdly, we all keep an archive. For example, if there are old documents, they are still stored over there. Another nice Azure feature is that they have the regional set up for that storage, and there's no downtime, and I'm grateful for that. We don't have to worry, because it's secure. If something goes down, they have other copies of it on a separate server, and it's accessible."
  • "The initial setup could be more straightforward. It would be best if you had a little bit of training or an understanding of the concepts. It's important because if you don't do that, then you might end up not following the best practices. Then you will learn it the hard way by making mistakes and then know that you shouldn't have done this or that. It's better to attend workshops and take a hands-on approach."

What is our primary use case?

Microsoft Azure Object Storage is integrated into the applications that we provide our customers. Job dockets, regulatory documents, licenses, and insurance-related are the most common types of documents that our application users store in their storage containers.

Apart from that, the job docket probably moves from one person to another and only authorized users can have access to view or download using a secure URL with a token and the shared access signature. This comes with an important feature that allows us to limit the time the users have access to the files on the storage.

Another aspect we have is for internal purposes, like having database backups over specific timelines. Internal application docket messages between the web and mobile application users including attachments that can be retained or archived for several years. All of this works under a multi-tenant structure.

How has it helped my organization?

What is most valuable?

The best thing is that it's on the cloud and accessible through any mobile, tablet, or laptop device. Easily configurable and integrated with any of our applications through its client libraries.

Secure and having the option to setup additional regions for high availability.

What needs improvement?

.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Microsoft Azure Object Storage consistently for the past two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Microsoft Azure Object Storage is stable. I haven't had any issues. Initially, when I was conducting hands-on workshops in the past few years most of the client-side libraries used to connect with Azure Storage have become obsolete and the newly updated libraries are simple and easy to work with.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Microsoft Azure Object Storage is a scalable solution. I believe this will grow, just like AWS, because it's totally isolated, and even websites could use that separately. I think Azure is beginning to take that path where other applications could directly connect to it and use the storage system. I believe there is a feature to interconnect all the other products they have.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was quick. You definitely need some help with that, and Microsoft provides resources for learning. I have in the past attended workshops that came in handy when working with this solution. It's easy to use if you have some hands-on experience. There are online courses with hands-on labs available in some cases on Microsoft Learn which makes understanding and using this solution easier.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pay per-use subscription has been our option and I see no problem using this subscription model as we are able to keep track of our costs on a daily basis

What other advice do I have?

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Private Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Microsoft Azure
