We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It is very easy to use and the interaction with various systems is very handy.""The initial setup is straightforward if you understand Data Protector.""The dashboards in Micro Focus Data Protector are very good. They are similar to the dashboards in Veeam Backup & Replication.""The initial setup was relatively easy.""Backup of SAP/Oracle -- they are more robust than the competition.""The initial setup is very easy.""I like that Micro Focus keeps a separate catalog of our data.""The solution is easy to use."

"I like that they have some new devices that are simpler to use because they kind of tie right into the cloud.""The most valuable feature is the backups."

Cons
"The online backups of Office 365 have room for improvement. This is now available for the Exchange Online part of Office 365, but we're still waiting for SharePoint Online, Teams, etc. We know that it's coming, but it takes time.""I'm uncertain if it supports virtual machine backup and restoration. If they could enhance this aspect, they could gain more support from end users.""Micro Focus Data Protector must improve its overall evolution record. They need to focus on hardware based instant recovery, client recovery, and cloud ability. Now there is no cloud ability.""It has a lot of undeveloped functions like window searching and patent searching, and within the main backup processes like VMware and Microsoft Exchange. It's completely not user-friendly, and it has no built-in antivirus software. In my opinion, Micro Focus Data Protector is not an enterprise level solution.""We're not satisfied with the robustness and stability of the software since Micro Focus took it in-house. The GUI is one thing they could improve. It's still a bit archaic. Data Protector needs a more functional, user-friendly GUI.""We have a lot of requests for the Micro Focus team, particularly in terms of the Japanese data pattern, as it's not as good now. The Japanese data pattern accuracy of the Micro Focus Data Protector needs to be improved because there are a lot of false negatives and false positives. We are currently testing this and our product team has been communicating with the Micro Focus team.""I don't like this solution so much because it's very technical and compared to Commvault and Veeam, it's not so user-friendly. The interface needs improvement.""OpenText Data Protector is more difficult to use and configure than OpenText VIM. The user-friendliness of OpenText Data Protector has to be increased, and the complexity of the tool needs to be reduced."

"StorageCraft ShadowXafe should improve the on-premises console management controls and protection and recovery.""Their restoration protocols could be better. I pulled all my clients out of their cloud mostly because I wasn't confident that they could restore out of the cloud. This was backed up by friends who had been burned by stuff like that. We moved away because of the lack of resources to restore from a potential catastrophic failure. It's challenging, and in some cases, they couldn't do it because they didn't have enough resources. For example, if there was a major disaster, and everybody needed their images out of the cloud, they couldn't give them to everybody."

  • "Avoid using many LTO drives; when using fewer drives, the price will be extremely good."
  • "In Data Protector, if you need extra features, you need to buy the agents for these features. Some of the features are Terabytes, some of them are agents. There's some complexity in the pricing and licensing."
