We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature for me is that you can swap out pieces when you have to lifecycle your equipment.""FlexPod’s prevalidated architectures are very important to our organization... Especially in healthcare, it is absolutely critical that we have a validated performance platform. It has to work every time.""Since the addition of nodes, it is all automated now. What would normally take us around three to five hours in the past, has come down to 15 minutes to half an hour, creating a significant gain in time.""The initial setup is straightforward. It is all interface-based, so point and click.""The flexibility and data deduplication have been the biggest practical applications.""Provides unified support: Being able to get a vendor from one company or another company on the line without having to go back through the call queue.""The solution’s validated designs for major enterprise apps in our organization are very important. It's basically become critical to our organization to have that system functioning a 100 percent of the time. If that system is not functional, then our doctors and nurses can't provide the care to the patients in an effective way. So, it's important that it is stable, works, and easy to understand.""It can scale, compute, and storage independently by what we need."

"Provides easy access to our data.""In cases where system interruptions occur, it enables rapid restoration, ensuring a prompt return to normal service levels.""Huawei FusionStorage does well in its basic functions and offers broad utility.""The product has a very simple GUI-based management platform and it is very simple to use. There is a very easy step-by-step configuration procedure that guides you through, and you can configure it very easily."

More Huawei FusionStorage Pros →

"The most valuable feature is that it is centrally managed, as it is quite easy for our customers to manage everything, end-to-end.""The most valuable features are reliability and high availability.""Systems run solidly.""We have seen measurable increases in our system performance. Those increases have been directly measurable in application performance and the delivery of critical business information to our users.""VMware NSX: Provides the ability for our organisation to deliver true DR.""It has improved system performance, batch times for off-hours processing, and reliability with production applications.""Finding a fully bundled, deployed, and configured solution with a short delivery time and unique support is really attractive.""The high redundancy of components has minimized frequent service degradation/failure."

Cons
"There is a lot of documentation that has to be reviewed before you go through an upgrade. It is not as straightforward as some other solutions.""The initial learning curve is pretty steep.""I'd like to see better integrations with some of the third-party tools, like Terraform. That would be good. We use Ansible to deploy and that's good, but it's slower than it needs to be.""We have had a bit of struggle on the support side. From a customer perspective, it has been up to us to make sure that we get both NetApp and Cisco involved when we have had an issue.""According to the product managers, there are some new products coming which will address some of our concerns around portability and compliance.""FlexPod XCS needs to improve its pricing.""We would like to have a single pane of glass available for it. It is something that the management in the business would like to have.""There is a history of issues with hardware availability. For example, we'll buy an array or a filer with a particular configuration and particular size of drive, sizing it appropriately. Then, as we grow, they're like, "Oh, you can always get more." Then when you go to get more, that model or type of disk is no longer available. It becomes this big process to try to figure out what we need to get, how it'll work, and how that'll integrate into the system. That could be simpler. They could do a bit more to guarantee the availability of parts. Obviously, not being the largest storage vendor, I know they can't sometimes control what the hardware vendors do. However, a bit more transparency and communication about this would be helpful."

More FlexPod XCS Cons →

"I hope for improvements in the product's processing ability and performance.""Their cloud services could be improved.""The initial setup and installation is not that straightforward. It should be made easier and the time to install should be reduced.""The product needs improvement in terms of affordability."

More Huawei FusionStorage Cons →

"It needs more customer/client involvement in back-end management.""OEM services requires too much planning and low availability of certified engineers.""Troublesome relationships with VCE at the beginning of our use came undone quickly after we went live.""With respect to the technical support, there is room for improvement.""The user control could be more advanced. They should work to improve this in future releases.""Improve the patching process and timeliness of updates/releases.""RCM upgrades were not scripted, and you needed to roll on your own. We were led to believe this would be otherwise.""RCM upgrades are painful."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Pricing and licensing is very affordable from a FlexPod perspective."
  • "It seems very cost effective once it's in place, and it's easy to expand and easy to add capacity without a lot of extra money."
  • "If your company really needs to be up 100% of the time, and you need to do a private data center, I don't know if I could realistically actually recommend another blueprint."
  • "Anytime that you are buying any storage make sure you understand storage. Do not just buy storage based on what somebody sells you in terms of IO or throughput."
  • "Buy storage based on the solutions you need, the technologies you need, and what will make your life a lot easier down the road."
  • "As a whole, it is inexpensive, and it uses the least amount of parts."
  • "Storage is very expensive. To buy MIC cards and additional storage either on-prem or in the cloud, the IT department does not have money for it, so you need a more niche product or a more flexible way to store your data. That is the benefit that you get from this product."
  • "We purchased the solution through CDW. They are a partner and knowledgeable."
  • More FlexPod XCS Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It is expensive but might be optimal based on the partnership."
  • More Huawei FusionStorage Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Strive for a consolidated ELA."
  • "Related to tech support: I believe it is too expensive."
  • "I would not say the pricing is not good value. It is still on the expensive side, near the top-end of cost compared to what's available now. Also, the licensing has to be improved. There has to be a clear definition of the licensing from the initial set-up so the customer knows what they are paying for, without being hit later on with extra licensing. The licensing definitions should be clearer and, perhaps, have one set of licenses rather than multiple licenses."
  • "It is not cheap."
  • "Vblock appears from the first while to be very expensive. There are more items you cannot see in the BOQ: customer service, support, delivery short time, and highly experienced VCE engineers."
  • "I think the pricing is on the higher end of the spectrum. There could be some adjustments that could be made there. Regarding licensing, watch compatibility with external products that you run on Vblock. It has got to be properly architected, otherwise, you will run into licensing issues."
  • "The paid support for Vblock is expensive."
  • "Vblock is priced at a premium because people don't want the headache of managing and deploying different products."

I urge all to look past the hot air and hype frenzy that are going on, because in the end, the HC platforms have to be aligned and congruent to the organization’s data architecture and business plans. The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
