Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The performance is better than doing it in some alternative ways. We don't have to worry about so much manual work.""Like most Microsoft products, SSIS is user-friendly and easy to use.""The ability of SSIS to transform and transport data is extremely valuable to me. It allows for intelligent extraction and manipulation of data during the process. Improved error handling would enhance ETL processes further. I haven't directly utilized the data flow components but they seem capable of supporting complex data integration needs.""There are many good features in this solution including the data fields, database integration, support for SQL views, and the lookups for matching information.""The main value of any Microsoft product is the ease of use. You can achieve more with less time. That's what's beneficial for me. With many competitors, you might need to spend more time coming up with a solution because you have to focus on taking care of the product.""SSIS provides you with lookup and transformation functions, and you have the flexibility to write your own custom code.""I have found its most valuable features to be its package management capabilities and the flexibility it offers in designing workflows.""The technical support is very good."

More SSIS Pros →

"Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten…On a scale from one to ten, where one is difficult, and ten is easy, I rate the initial setup a nine.""Areas for improvement would be the cloud fitness of the product and the ease of migrating to newer versions.""The ability to link to different technologies is valuable to us.""Good TIBCO BusinessWorks features are the admin console and the ability to roll back to the previous version.""The high availability, tolerance, and load balancing features are top-notch. Its scalability features are also pretty cool.""BusinessWorks reduces development time, helping developers to focus on business logic.""I work in operations, so I value BusinessWorks' performance the most.""We use the solution to develop applications."

More TIBCO BusinessWorks Pros →

"Support is absolutely excellent, efficient, and timely.""WhereScape RED has improved our business's ability to generate needed reporting without requiring a large team of developers to manually code all of the necessary plumbing.""This is a fantastically robust DW tool that will make you at least 10 times faster in producing a DW.""Data transformations and rollups are easy to accomplish.""RED generates comprehensive documentation and regenerates it as quickly as things changes, but it also provides impact documentation.""Naturally produces a way to easily debug your DW data solutions.""WhereScape is really helpful in terms of architecture data. Everything is one of automation. Two people can do thousands of tables in one day or two. It saves a lot of time.""I found the initial setup very easy."

Cons
"We're in the process of switching to Informatica, and we need to work out data lineage and data profiling and to improve the quality of our data. SSIS, however, is not that compatible with Informatica. We managed to connect it to Informatica Metadata Manager, but we don't get good lineage, so we have to redo all our ETLs using the Informatica process in order to accept the proper data lineage.""Sometimes when we want to publish to other types of databases it's not easy to publish to those databases. For example, the Jet Database Engine. Before the SSIS supported Jet Database Engine but nowadays it doesn't support the Jet Database Engine. We connect to many databases such as Access database, SparkPros databases and the other types of databases using Jet Database Engines now and SSIS now doesn't seem to support it in our databases.""SSIS is stable, but extensive ETL data processing can have some performance issues.""Involving a data lake or data engineering aspects would be useful. While it is there, we need more features included.""We have issues with SSIS connectors while extracting data from Excel sources.""SSIS should be made a little bit more intuitive and user-friendly because it needs an expert-level person to work on it.""We have a stability problem because when something works, it works one time. The next time, it doesn't work.""I would like to see more standard components out of the box, such as SFTP, and Data Compression components."

More SSIS Cons →

"Scaling with the solution is costly because if we need to scale up, we have to buy more memory. That means more money. Solutions like Camel or Pulsar come with built-in options to scale horizontally, vertically, region-wide or country-wide.""TIBCO BusinessWorks could be improved with cloud support.""The technical support's turnaround time is an area where TIBCO needs to consider improvements...Getting support from TIBCO on a particular issue takes a lot of turnaround time.""There are not many plugins available to integrate the databases. We have to write it in Java and integrate it. The developers should have more knowledge. These are the three main aspects that they could improve.""Could be more user friendly in the development area.""The Business Studio tool can be improved, which is the tool for designing the processes. Improving the Business Studio tool will make this solution more stable. It has a steep learning curve, and it is pretty tough to learn.""The container-based image is too large and this makes auto-scaling difficult.""Technical support is average. It's not the best."

More TIBCO BusinessWorks Cons →

"They need a more robust support center. It has been a bit difficult to find solutions to problems that are out-of-the-box.""Project-based searching of data objects in the data warehouse browser needs to be improved.""Improve the object renaming ability (it works, but it could be more automated).""Technical support isn't the best.""The ability to execute SSIS projects within WhereScape would be nice because we have a lot of packages that are too cumbersome to recreate.""The solution can be a little more user-friendly on enterprise-level where people use it.""Jobs cannot be deleted via the deployment package. When deploying from dev to QA or production, a job has to be retired. The job has to be manually removed from the target environment.""No support for change data capture or delta detection - that must be custom coded ."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "This solution has provided an inexpensive tool, and it is easy to find experienced developers."
  • "My advice is to look at what your configuration will be because most companies have their own deals with Microsoft."
  • "This solution is included with the MSSQL server package."
  • "It would be beneficial if the solution had a less costly cloud offering."
  • "Based on my experience and understanding, Talend comes out to be a little bit expensive as compared to SSIS. The average cost of having Talend with Talend Management Console is around 72K per region, which is much higher than SSIS. SSIS works very well with Microsoft technologies, and if you have Microsoft technologies, it is not really expensive to have SSIS. If you have SQL Server, SSIS is free."
  • "We have an enterprise license for this solution."
  • "It comes bundled with other solutions, which makes it difficult to get the price on the specific product."
  • "All of my clients have this product included as part of their Microsoft license."
  • More SSIS Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "My understanding is that the licensing is very costly."
  • "It is a bit expensive for medium-sized companies. If you are migrating from the current version to the container-supported version, it is quite expensive. The existing licensing will not work because the product platform itself is different."
  • "Its price policy has changed quite a lot in the last two years. It was extremely expensive previously. Nowadays, you can buy a license for BusinessWorks for €2000. Looking at what you get in return in terms of support, TIBCO community, and stability, it is fairly reasonable. It is not too expensive."
  • "I think BusinessWorks is more expensive compared to other products. We have the ELA, so at least we have some sort of bargain or discount with that. But for a start-up, it's very expensive compared to other ESBs."
  • "Licensing scheme is too rigid"
  • "I don't have the prices of the products, but I know that TIBCO is not a cheap solution. I think that this solution is more suitable for large companies because I don't think that small- or medium-sized companies would have the money for this solution. WSO2 has the community version for free, so many of the smaller companies can use it. I'm not sure what the prices are for support, though, so I suppose the support for WSO2 is not cheap either."
  • "The solution is too expensive. It's one of the most expensive solutions out there, particularly because there are so many open-source competitors on the market. I don't know the exact numbers, however."
  • "I give the cost of the solution a four out of ten."
  • More TIBCO BusinessWorks Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Factor in the price of specialized consulting who know this product. They're hard to find and expensive."
  • "ROI is at least 10 times."
  • "Speed to market of a warehouse solution at a relatively inexpensive price point."
  • "Our company purchased a corporate unlimited license."

Technology has made it easier for businesses to organize and manipulate data to get a clearer picture of what’s going on with their business. Notably, ETL tools have made managing huge amounts of data significantly easier and faster, boosting many organizations’ business intelligence operations There are many third-party vendors offering ETL solutions, but two of the most popular are PowerCenter Informatica and Microsoft SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services). Each technology has its advantages but there are also similarities on how they carry out the extract-transform-load processes and only differ in terminologies. If you’re in the process of choosing ETL tools and PowerCenter Informatica and Microsoft SSIS made it to your shortlist, here is a short comparative discussion detailing the differences between the two, as well as their benefits. Package Configuration Most enterprise data integration projects would require the capacity to develop a solution in one platform and test and deploy it in a separate environment without having to manually change the established workflow. In order to achieve this seamless movement between two environments, your ETL technology should allow the dynamic update of the project’s properties using the content or a parameter file or configuration. Both Informatica and SSIS support this functionality using different methodologies. In Informatica, every session can have more than one source and one or more destination connections. There are… Read more →
