We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The statistics that are available are very good.""The feature I like most is the ease of reporting.""A good automation tool that supports SAP functional testing.""Scripting is the most valuable. We are able to record and then go in and modify the script that it creates. It has a lot of generative scripts.""The scalability of the solution is quite good. You can easily expand the product if you need to.""The major thing it has helped with is to reduce the workload on testing activities.""The ability to develop scripts in Visual Studio, Visual Studio integration, is the most valuable feature."

"This tool is really good. We don't need to write any code, but it writes the code itself, only record and play. And it is simple, and it is not heavy; I mean, it doesn't have a large footprint, and it works well for us.""The most valuable feature of the solution is the number of plugins for object recognition. The predefined libraries allow us to automate tasks.""The most valuable feature is the automation of test cases.""The most valuable feature for me is the number of protocols that can be tested. It not only tests Web, but also SAP, Siebel, .Net, and even pdf.""The solution is very scalable.""The most valuable feature of Micro Focus UFT Developer is the flexibility to work with many different types of software.""The most valuable feature for UFT is the ability to test a desktop application.""Integrates well with other products."

"I find UFT One to be very good for thick clients, which are non-browser applications.""Hidden among the kitchen sink of features is a new Data Generation tool called the Test Combinations Generator.""Object Repository Technology, which is a good mean to identify graphical components of the applications under test.""We have used it for the web and Windows-based applications. It is very productive in terms of execution.""The scalability of Micro Focus UFT One is good.""Record and Replay to ease onboarding of new users.""I like the Help feature in UFT One. For example, if you are navigating a particular window, where there are different options. One wouldn’t know the purpose of every option, but there is no need to search because that window contains a Help button. If you click on that Help button, it directly navigates to the respective help needed. VBScript is very easy to understand and easy to prepare scripts with minimal learning curve.""The ease of record and playback as well as descriptive programming are the most valuable features of UFT (QTP)."

Cons
"The solution has a lack of compatibility with newer technologies.""Could be more user-friendly on the installation and configuration side.""We moved to Ranorex because the solution did not easily scale, and we could not find good and short term third-party help. We needed to have a bigger pool of third-party contractors that we could draw on for specific implementations. Silk didn't have that, and we found what we needed for Ranorex here in the Houston area. It would be good if there is more community support. I don't know if Silk runs a user conference once a year and how they set up partners. We need to be able to talk to somebody more than just on the phone. It really comes right down to that. The generated automated script was highly dependent upon screen position and other keys that were not as robust as we wanted. We found the automated script generated by Ranorex and the other key information about a specific data point to be more robust. It handled the transition better when we moved from computer to computer and from one size of the application to the other size. When we restarted Silk, we typically had to recalibrate screen elements within the script. Ranorex also has some of these same issues, but when we restart, it typically is faster, which is important.""Everything is very manual. It's up to us to find out exactly what the issues are.""They should extend some of the functions that are a bit clunky and improve the integration.""The pricing is an issue, the program is very expensive. That is something that can improve.""The support for automation with iOS applications can be better."

More OpenText Silk Test Cons →

"The tool could be a little easier.""We push one button and the tests are completely executed at once, so just have to analyze and say it's okay. It would be nice if this could be entirely automated.""In the next release, I would like to see integration with different cloud-based tools such as Azure.""The pricing could be improved.""It's now too heavy and they should be making it faster. We do an attempt at automatic regression testing. We schedule a test to start at a certain time. It takes a lot of time to download the resources and start UFT. Competitors in this area have tools that start faster and run the test faster. For example, if the test at our side will take 10 minutes, another tool will do that in one minute.""UFT Developer is good, but it requires high-level development skills. Scripting is something that everybody should know to be able to work with this product. Currently, it is very development intensive, and you need to know various scripting languages. It would be good if the development effort could be cut short, and it can be scriptless like Tosca. It will help in more adoption because not every team has people with a software engineering background. If it is scriptless, the analysts who wear multiple hats and come from different backgrounds can also use it in a friendly manner. It is also quite expensive.""The price of the solution could improve.""In the next release, I would like to see the connectivity improved to be less complex and more stable."

More OpenText UFT Developer Cons →

"I would like to have detailed description provided to test the cloud-based applications.""One area for improvement is its occasional slowness.""It could work with more browsers other than Internet Explorer, and could better handle new things like Ext JS.""Scripting has become more complex from a maintenance standpoint to support additional browsers.""They need to reduce the licensing cost. There's pushback from customers because of the cost.""Sometimes UFT can take a while to open and sometimes will run slower than expected.""Sometimes it appears that UFT takes a while to open and sometimes will run slower than expected. Also, UFT uses a lot of memory. On this note, if you are running UFT on a virtual server I would add more RAM memory than the minimum requirements especially when using multiple add-ins. HP is pretty good about coming out with new patches to fix known issues and it pays for the user to check for new patches and updates on a regular basis.""The overall design needs an entire overhaul. We prefer software designed to ensure the package isn't too loaded."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Our licensing fees are on a yearly basis, and while I think that the price is quite reasonable I am not allowed to share those details."
  • "We paid annually. There is a purchase cost, and then there is an ongoing maintenance fee."
  • More OpenText Silk Test Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It is quite expensive and is priced per seat or in concurrent (or floating) licenses over a period of months."
  • "The pricing is quite high compared to the competition."
  • "The cost of this solution is a little bit high and we are considering moving to another solution."
  • "When we compare in the market with other tools that have similar features, it may be a little bit extra, but the cost is ten times less."
  • "It is cheap, but if you take the enterprise license, it is valid for both software items."
  • "The licensing is very expensive, so often, we don't have enough VMs to run all of our tests."
  • "Its cost is a bit high. From the licensing perspective, I am using a concurrent license. It is not a seed license. It is something that I can use in our network. It can also be used by other users."
  • "The price of the solution could be lowered. The cost is approximately $25 per year for a subscription-based license."
  • More OpenText UFT Developer Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It took about five years to break even. UFT is costly."
  • "The licensing and pricing model is confusing."
  • "It's an expensive solution."
  • "For the price of five automation licenses, you simply would not be able to hire five manual testers for two years worth of 24/7 manual testing work on demand."
  • "The price is only $3,000. I don't know how many QA analysts you would have in any given company. Probably no more than five or 10. So if it's a large corporation, it can easily afford $15,000 to $25,000. I don't see that being an issue."
  • "The way the pricing model works is that you pay a whole boatload year one. Then, every year after, it is around half or less. Because instead of paying for the new product, you are just paying for the support and maintenance of it. That is probably one of the biggest things that I hear from most people, even at conferences, "Yeah, I would love to use UFT One, but we don't have a budget for it.""
  • "The pricing fee is good. If someone makes use of the solution once a day for a half hour then the fee will be more expensive. For continuous use and application of the solution to different use cases, the fee is average."
  • "The price is one aspect that could be improved."
