Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The management interface on the software is very simple. It is insanely simple compared to most SANs. The interface is also powerful when used to complete tasks that an IT administrator needs to complete.""This was a great implementation for a small to mid-size business.""The most useful aspect is the hyper-converged SD SAN and the ease to expand it by just adding cheap SSD or NVME disks.""Virtual SAN runs on iSCSI, which is free and easy to configure. It's easy to manage from StarWind's GUI console, and it only required a few extra switch ports.""Support keeps track of alerts of the system and verifies with us if we need help to fix any issues. They have great and quick technical support.""Without the need for any downtime, enterprises can simply grow their storage infrastructure using StarWind Virtual SAN by adding new servers or disks to the current infrastructure.""I like StarWind's high availability. The failover is almost immediate, so the end users have no idea the guest VM moved at all. We can failover all guest VMs onto a single hypervisor, place it into maintenance mode, install updates, and reboot a hypervisor all during the daytime and remotely, with confidence the process will be successful.""The installation of StarWind Virtual SAN was pretty easy, and the configuration was done in no time."

"The single-pane-of-glass VMware interface makes configuration and management easy so you do not need IT specialists."

More Maxta Hyperconvergence Software Pros →

"Its technical support is excellent.""The initial setup is straightforward.""The flash ability, in terms of tiering and caching, is amazing""The most valuable feature are the caching capabilities using the storage class memory.""The performance, reliability, and affordability has been most valuable.""The most valuable feature is that there is no single point of failure.""It's mainly about the storage expansion, like in hyper-converged solutions."

Cons
"One main thing this product needs to work on is reporting.""The gathering of monthly consumption and performance reports for future dissemination to concerned parties is very important. Unfortunately, StarWinds vSAN doesn't offer this functionality.""You have to do a "full" sync on write-back cache disks instead of a quick sync if there is an issue.""There is a general lack of documentation, especially up-to-date documentation to get started.""The setup and documentation for the installation with the free version could definitely be improved.""While we had no problems setting the system up, and service technicians from StarWind could assist us very well, they could provide some form of in-depth documentation.""In the next release, they could make some graphs of the real-time loading, speed of storage, and interfaces. Of course, these can be viewed in other places. But, in the event of a malfunction or troubleshooting, this would be convenient.""The documentation could be better."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"A new company took over the product and now the support for Maxta has gone way downhill."

More Maxta Hyperconvergence Software Cons →

"It is scalable, but only beyond two nodes. If I go for two nodes it's not scalable. I need to build a complete cluster from the beginning if I'm going for two nodes.""I think the online documentation needs a lot of work and so do the sizing tools.""More optimization could be done in terms of mirroring.""It is difficult to get a hardware compatibility certification for the solution.""The integration is not difficult because there is no GUI, but we need to use a PowerShell command. This makes it difficult to monitor and to see the components' statuses.""The management tool within this solution could be improved. We would also like to be able to access services like Azure when using this solution.""Documentation management could be improved"

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
